You could do the seal on the frame, though, or if you're feeling brave, you could get someone to help you hold the window whilst you unscrew it!
@neilhurley399510 ай бұрын
Good video. 1 thing to add - the seal you're using is known as offset bubble seal. The 'fatter' part of the bubble should be installed towards the outer edge of whatever you're installing it to. This ensures more surface area/sealing contact when the window or door is closed 👍 Keep up the good work Fowler.

Seems a straight forward job. I was surprised that the corners were not cut to form the shape better, but that risks letting water in, so if you can get them round the radius, it’ll be better. One thing I would caution though is to be prepared for the weight of the window if you’re unscrewing it. They can be very heavy and it’s easy to bend or deform the hinges when they’re partially attached. Been there, done that, …

I got new windows fitted last September, they are shocking, I was fitter around Glasgow / Central Belt area for 3 years back around 2007 - when the installers left I had a good lookover their work, they did do a decent job tbf all bar the inside of one window, that one window was done by Stevie Wonder ''some random fitter that showed up'' the silicone job he done was really terrible, something I'll address when I decorate next time, I have a double window in the living room and one of them makes a very annoying noise when it's windy, had a few return visits but I'm now sick of hearing the crap they talk. When the weather improves I'll fix that window myself. Been flicking through some of Yur videos fella as every day's a school day. Thanks and Sub'd

Great channel for DIY thanks. Its the little tips like where to start and finish the new seals that make the difference. I would have to leave the window in situ as i'm on my own so would struggle with the weight, only more of a problem with upper floor windows getting eady access, but i suppose undoing the hinge would allow wider opening. Yay!

@neilhurley399510 ай бұрын
Important safety note: because hinges take the load well and we casually open/close windows with ease it's easy to forget these things can be heavy! Double glazing weighs around 20kg per sqm. Add to that the frame and locking mech (and perhaps lead!) and you could soon be hanging out of an upstairs window with a casement that weighs the same as a full suitcase - at arms length. You won't know how much it weighs until you've removed your last screw whilst holding the window with one hand. For your first I advise not being alone and make sure nothing or nobody is beneath the window you're working on 👍
@FixitwithFowler10 ай бұрын

I bought this and after 20 minutes I got about 4" done with help of a screwdriver. Then I gave up. Luckily the old seal wasn't that bad after I cleaned it with fairy liquid. Looking at the old seal, it is thinner, I'd say 3mm. The old seal went on easy like yours did. Storm seals reckons they fit almost all windows. I didn't think I had any special windows, they're very average upvc windows. Great video though.

I wouldn’t use fairy liquid as it may damage the seal. Use Silicone grease or spray, this will rejuvenate the rubber. Mr.Fowler may confirm this as I may be wrong.

removing the glass and refitting the unit after is not something you would be able to do without correct tools.
@neilhurley399510 ай бұрын
Hi John, I think Steve got the wrong end of the stick about your query. Here's a couple of pointers: If your windows are internally glazed (glazing/bead removed inside) then there's not much you can do about changin seal that meets the glazing as they're usually integral. If your windows are older and externally glazed the internal seal touching the glass is known as a wedge gasket. These are easily replaceable and can be pryed out gently with a stiff scraper. Once removed you need to measure the resultant gap (mm) and search online for wedge gaskets. Loads of companies supply so just give them your measurement. If you're not confident in measuring you can send them a small cutting off the end of your gasket so they can match the profile. I hope this helps.
@lu34lyf10 ай бұрын
@@neilhurley3995 of course you can change gasket in the bead Profile depending..

Looking at the diagram on the seal dimensions, the bit that you push into the slot seems offset and not in the centre so does it have to go in a certain way? Many thanks
@FixitwithFowler10 ай бұрын
Ideally, it needs to match the existing seal

The wider side of the bubble needs to face the outside edge of whichever extrusion you're fitting it to. I hope this helps.

I did this on our back door they were set at neutral( there were no screws just 3 Allen key ones) the windows are older so don't know if I can do them although I could replace the seals on the windows although we have issues with blown windows that the letting agents won't replace
@FixitwithFowlerАй бұрын
Well, as it happens, we too have some of our double glazing that has blown. As the windows are so old we can't replace the glass. However, i added secondary glazing last year to some windows, and that made a real difference. This is what i used amzn.to/3Dhs0vc and this is the video i made kzbin.info/www/bejne/j5TGlpqvZa2Ygs0si=oDyHxRZPmmxEtzEf

Question please. If I use silicone spray before putting the seal in and stretching it to make it easier then relaxing it. How long would you leave it to regain its original length? Thank you for your video I feel a bit more confident now.
@FixitwithFowler19 күн бұрын
I would avoid stretching it and putting it under tension. They are slightly tight to fit but once in they will stay in.
@colincrooky19 күн бұрын
@ Thank you. I noticed you did not stretch them, I have had experiences with similar seals and it was the only way I could fit them but you are right as I was always wary about cutting them too short. I have just contacted CR Smith for a profile of mine but they are 32 years old (still perfect except for seals which are completely flat). 😂

@colincrooky hi, is it a upvc door?

@@FixitwithFowler No, windows but the profile is “< “shaped not a circle. Thank you.

Is it a similar process if you need to replace the rubber at the edge of the glass?
@FixitwithFowler8 ай бұрын
No, unfortunately not. You need to remove the beading, but I'm unsure if you can replace the rubber next to the glass
