Bought my 14" set from Toolstation as they were cheaper than SF and decided to have a go at the weekend. This was the best video by a country mile and my old and worn hinges were easily replaced after watching Mr Fowler. My window is now flush and seals onto the frame as it has never done before, no road noise or draughts. Cheers

Great video, as I've fitted hinges as part of my job for 10 years I've always struggled drilling and screwing while holding the window but the tip about pre drilling the holes first with the new hinge is gold will be doing this in future 👍

Thank you for the helpful video. One question, I have a top window like the one in this video, and it's not shutting. I noticed that the hinge attachment to the main window frame has dropped by few millimetres and that's the reason the window is scraping against the bottom. The problem I have is, after unscrewing the three self tapping screws that hold the hinge is place and push the hinge slightly up by few millimetres, the window shuts but the screws are not biting into the main frame and so end up with where I started. Any tip on what I can do to make screws tighten up? I tried a small upvc piece to plug the existing holes but that didn't work.
@FixitwithFowler
@FixitwithFowler 10 ай бұрын
That would be my suggestion (to try and plug the holes). However, have you tried actual wall plugs, either yellow ones or red ones?
@neurosurgeon1261
@neurosurgeon1261 10 ай бұрын
@@FixitwithFowler Thanks for your reply. Yep, trying the wall plugs was my next step ,only I'm struggling to get hold of white wall plugs so that they blend in with the white upvc frame. Otherwise sod it, and use any colour plugs.
@FixitwithFowler
@FixitwithFowler 10 ай бұрын
@neurosurgeon1261 Yeah, I don't think you will get white ones. However, you can get grey ones like these amzn.to/3uSKZZp also they will sit under the hinges

Hey you, thanks so much, 🙏been stressed 😭 during storm Darragh . Window blew open like a bomb before the storm. No idea why it all happened before the 60 to 80 mph gust. Cobbled it together with a novice. Now i know how to change, as all tradesmen i understand could be inundated...You've given me much peace of mind ..should i be forced to get into it. Really smashing video, ❤ it is a godsend. In this TRYING and v v difficult time where the storm was the worst gale force 11 the next level is a hurricane. Ive been praying the window would be forced falling out or even damaging a human. I need to get the exact hinge wait for a better day. And of course a bit of help. I need to get it sorted. Once again...🎉 really brilliant ❤ video, explains so well, taking the stress out of all these dark arts.😂🎉

Worth a mention if not already here somewhere. When buying hinges for the window in your demo video, they are referred to as side-hung, despite being at the top and bottom. Opposite applies to a top window with the hinges on the side, it would be referred to as top-hung. The description matches where traditional window hinges would be.

Good job Steve, nicely detailed as ever. I know you made the point about weight and obviously you didn't have an issue with this one, however I think it's a point worth labouring. These things can be heavy! Double glazing weighs around 20kg per sqm. Add to that the frame and locking mech (and perhaps lead!) and you could soon be hanging out of an upstairs window with a casement that weighs the same as a full suitcase - at arms length. Triple glazing is almost certainly a 2-man job. You won't know how much it weighs until you've removed your last screw whilst holding the window with one hand. For your first I advise not being alone and make sure nothing or nobody is beneath the window you're working on 👍 Keep up with the vids mate, some really good stuff.

I had my windows replaced about 2 years ago, I had them back loads of times to fix things, but couldn't get my head around why it still seemed so cold in the living room and the bedroom above it, I did the paper test, where you trap a piece in the window, then shut it, and try to pull the paper out, I was able to do this on both living room and bedroom windows, although, the living room window is the worst, while it's tight-ish at the top and bottom, I can get a 4mm packer in the middle, the really bad news is, the company has gone bust, does that means that I have a bow in the middle of my window frame, and will changing the hinges do any good?
@FixitwithFowler

Hi, thanks for the detailed comment. It sounds like the window frame is bowed, maybe due to the way it was installed. The hinges normally only need replacing if the window doesn't seal right at the hinge side only. Have you looked at my other video about agusting doors and windows? kzbin.info/www/bejne/h4jOgWeGbNGIg6Msi=L6-RVkCH9QN63U26

They are rivits. Unfortunately they will need drilling out so it may not be the easiest job to do!
@leeds85

@@FixitwithFowler Well that was stressful! The rivets left a bigger hole than the available hole on the hinge, so screws just wobbling around. Packed them out with wall plugs. Solid now but no idea if it'll hold over time. Now waiting for the misses to call me one day to say the window has fallen out, lol.

I would try using thise first and once installed, give them a pull to see if they are strong enough. If there is any movement, you could then increase the screw size, but it is best to start with a smaller screw but just watch for the screw heads catching!

Hi, at 4:51 , you said to use self tapping self drilling screws. The screw you are using is pointed at the base. But when I checked on the website to buy, self tapping self drilling screws are a bit blunt/ flat at the base. Why is it different than yours the one I am trying to buy? Thanks

Hi, these are self tapping screws which are hardened and came with the new hinge. You can use self drilling and tapping screws but it is only upvc it is going into. Something like these would be ideal but you would need to compare with the old screws amzn.to/4cYwbt4

@@FixitwithFowlerOne more thing. I also managed to change the window seal as well just by looking your video. When I took the window out, I found the old seals needed replacement as they were mostly damaged. Luckily, I had seen your video of "how to change the window seals" while watching the window hinges replacement video. The link was in the video. I rushed to Screwfix and got the UPVC seals. I managed to change it without any difficulty. The window is tight now.😊

It sounds like the hinges, but it's hard to tell without seeing it. Does the window shut full on the hinged side of the window?
@lydiariley95
@lydiariley95 Ай бұрын
@ it’s hinged on both sides of the window. The hinges are at the top and the window pushes out (it’s a first story window, of a 5 year old property). The window will not shut at all (as the I think they are called the cams) are hitting the side of the lock keeps so aren’t aligned/ are too low

@@FixitwithFowler Someone has said that the sash has dropped, and the glass needs taking out and the hinges lifting, so that the sash is higher so it will shut. Not sure if that can be achieved by following the steps in this video or if I need to just leave it to the professionals 😅
@FixitwithFowler

@lydiariley95 it could be the locking mechanism or the hinges. Does the handle move freely and the mechanism move?
@lydiariley95
@lydiariley95 Ай бұрын
@ the handle moves freely whilst the window is open, its FREEZING in that room as the window won’t shut. I don’t think it’s the handle, because you can see where the cams are hitting the frame, there are slight marks where it’s damaged the frame.

No, unfortunately not, i have done a small window upstairs, but it's not ideal without a ladder. It is difficult to get to the hinges if the window is small, but it can be done. I would recommend someone to help and even tie something around the handle or even the window if possible! Hopefully that helps?

That's true but I'm replacing them as the plastic locator on the hinge is broken, hence the gap in between the frame and the window
@RinzSach
@RinzSach 5 ай бұрын
It's short term as in weeks, and also if you spill with your nozzle it will make the frame outside shiny. Once is fine, if you carry on you will damage the plastic seal and ruin the outside PVC if spilt, change to wd40 silicone as that's the step up and will last 1-2 years.
