In this video, I describe, in great detail, how to replace a drill chuck for a cordless drill. When I was doing the research for this project, I was surprised to see that most of the time when people talk about replacing a drill chuck they only mention replacing them with brand new parts, why has no one mentioned that most of these chucks are exactly the same size and are for that matter, interchangeable? I saved a few bucks using an older drill for parts and added another usable drill to my equipment list! If you like what you see, please show some support and subscribe to my channel. Thanks for watching!

This video was a great help. You disassembled the exact Ryobi drill I have. It helped me know what to expect underneath the drill chuck and confirm the direction I needed to turn. Unfortunately no matter what I did, I couldn’t get the chuck to break loose because the motor or clutch just slipped (even on drill mode). I ended up taking the drill apart and carefully disassembled the planetary gears. I was then able to put the last triangular collared component of the gear train into a large socket with a breaker bar to then easily break the chuck loose. Not something I’d recommend to the faint of heart but I channeled my inner AvE and was able to successfully put it all back together without issue. Thanks again for the video!

I hate that it wasn't as easy for you to get loose. Maybe they got carried away with the thread lock? Glad to hear you were able to finally get it though. And anytime I can be grouped, even in the slightest, in with AvE, is a huge compliment. Thanks for the the comment brother.

I have the same Kobalt drill but lost the chuck screw during replacement. Do you know what the screw size and thread pitch is? 1/4"-28 didn't fit. M6-1.0mm starts to thread but doesn't go that deep.
@JOATology
@JOATology 7 күн бұрын
Sorry, I sure don't and this was several years ago, so even the one I have may have been updated or changed completely. I would try a few until you find the right thread pattern and then try a few lengths until you find one that is good and secure. I wish I could be more help.

Hello! I have a Ryobi R18DD2, and by mistake I read the DD3 description and tought I could use 13mm....but in fact the max is 10mm. Is there any adaptator somewhere I could buy? Or can I change the Drill Chuck and put a bigger one without messing everything up ? Thank you !
@JOATology
@JOATology 3 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately, I don't think there is an adapter for that conversion. From what I could find searching Google and Amazon, the 13mm chuck has a shaft, where as with the DD2 and DD3 both appear to be screw on type Jacobs chucks. If you could attach the 13 mm in the place of the 10 mm, I don't think it would cause much damage to the drill as long as it fit inside of the speed selector and the and the drill could spin it, but, seeing as you can't even attach it to the drill body, I guess that doesn't really matter. I'm sorry, I wish I had better information for you. If you do find a work-around, I would love to hear about it though. Best of luck to you.

Do you have the chuck opened all the way up? When I looked up the P252 on Google, they all have 3 jaw chucks. If you don't see a screw inside the chuck, then it may just be a screw on style chuck. Remember it is reverse threaded when trying to take it off.

My $40 Ryobi corded drill's chuck stopped working. Not sure if due to heat or fine dust. Chuck did NOT seem to be removable in any obvious way. Found a repair parts sheet but no directions to make a repair. Got money back, just barely within its return period.
@JOATology

Glad you were able to get your money back at least. Usually those types of drill chucks are attached one of three ways, either with the screw, or they are threaded on, or possibly both of those. Either way, it sound like you made out much better than trying to do a repair. What brand are you going to with for the replacement?

I needed to remove a chuck off a POS Nawthin Toool 90* drill to "see" if I could access and possibly replace the ninety-degree, plastic drive gear.. Got the center chuck screw out, but NOTHING would turn the chuck.. Six Minutes into your vid, I saw the "Allen Wrench Trick".. I'm a 50+ year professional motorcycle & automotive mechanic (now retired) and NEVER thought of, nor saw your method.. It got the chuck off, (Put the allen wrench in the vice!! Stronger than my forearm!!),, the chuck WAS "two piece, all plastic", needless to say, chuck is now destroyed.. Bottom line, the "KLUTCH" drill is total junk, but I was going to get that clutch off, come hell or high water (neither happened, but it was 110* in the shop... close to "hell").. Drill is trash-canned, (expected that) and I learned something new.. so.... Good On Ya!! Thanks! Chas

Dang buddy. I wish I could buy you an ice cold beverage after all of that. I hate that you lost your drill in the process but I'm glad I was able to show you that trick. I have to admit that I didn't come up with it, but I saw the screw in my drill chuck and looked around on the internet till I found how to get the thing off and it then saved me some money, so I was pretty happy. I don't know where you're at but I'm in the south east U.S. and it has been an unforgiving summer here so far, with only 3+ months to go....(Summer down here lasts close to 6 months lol) Wishing you the best Chas and I hope you're able to find a good replacement.

@@JOATology I had bought that "90 degree, close quarters" drill to drill out one broken bolt from an engine block.. The drill did it's job (once) then stripped-out on a second application.. I've got several 3/8" VSR drill motors, and two "mutha" half-inch jobs.. so no bind, there.. As to humidity and temps.. I lived in Miami, Florida; Big Spring, Texas; Lake Charles, Louisiana; "North Field" (now Anderson AFB) Guam (talk about Hot AND Humid!!); outside Tokyo, Japan; a little island in the Pacific called Oahu, Territory of Hawaii (it was "tough duty", but someone had to do it ;-}); a wide place in the road called Oscoda, Mich. (had a 20 below winter, four feet of snow with twelve foot drifts).. Glad I was there ONLY one year, but I did learn to drive on a frozen lake.. in a manual four-speed, 1959 Volvo PV544.. My Dad said I couldn't hit anything out on the lake!!. Been in Texas ever since Aug '61!! And lived in Ft. Worth when we had ALL 70+ of those record 100+ hot days, including the two 115's!! So, you ought to be glad YOUR summer ONLY lasts six months.. We've had "summers" last from Feb-Mar ALL the way thru October-November!! I've even run the A/C on Christmas day!! Bottom Line, I DID enjoy that "ice cold beverage" (or three) after messin' with that drill.. which has since been "filed" in the round filing cabinet ;-} Have a good'un, y'a'll and keep-up the good work!! Chas.

I tried this method, it just beat me up. Then I used hand impact driver you hit with a hammer to remove stubborn screws . The largest phillips on most is too short, but mine worked by putting the phillips tip in first, then placing the driver part on what little was out of the hole, and it worked fine and quick without beating myself up.
@JOATology
@JOATology 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I imagine on a better quality brand, it probably was put in there a little tighter and maybe even had some loc-tite on it. Mine came out without much hassle at all. But you put a garbage Ryobi chuck on it. I have two Ryobi ONE+ drills. An old blue 1/2" and a new yellow 3/8". The chucks on both will not hold on to anything. Bits will spin in them drilling into soft pine. The least bit of vibration and they let go of hex shank bits. Only way to get them to hold is tightening them with channel lock pliers. I've tried to get the junk chucks off but they won't budge. I have new 1/2" and 3/8" keyless Jacobs chucks to put on them, if the OEM ones would break loose. Putting the clutch in drill position and the direction switch to reverse then twisting counter clockwise on a hex key just turns the motor. I've hit the end of the wrench with an 8oz ball peen hammer. They just turn. Yes, I did remove the left hand threaded screws. I have a 1/2" corded Skil drill which came with a junk chuck out of the box. Using the key in all three holes, with a box end wrench for extra leverage, it would still slip. So I got a Jacobs keyless chuck, it's a 1/2" one with the smaller thread used for 3/8" drills, sold for upgrading the capacity of 3/8" drills. Apparently in addition to pinching the zinc out of pennies cost cutting the garbage chuck, Skil also squeezed more on that drill with a smaller spindle. With the Jacobs chuck it became a great drill. The chuck is easy to tighten, just twist until it clicks twice and It Will NOT Slip. It's just as easy to release. That's what I have to go onto my 1/2" Ryobi. For the 3/8" I have a different style Jacobs keyless chuck, dunno if it's as good but it absolutely cannot be as awful as the POS Ryobi put on it.
@JOATology
@JOATology 2 жыл бұрын
While I agree that the chuck they used on the Ryobi is absolute junk, the purpose of this video was to show someone how to turn 2 pieces of junk into 1 piece that at least had a use. I haven't had a single problem with the replacement chuck slipping yet, bit when I do, I'm going to go get a keyless chuck for it too, but since it works, I don't see a reason to replace it. As far as your Chuck's not coming loose, maybe there's a snap ring or something else in yours. Try to find a video specifically for your drill and see if that helps. Best of luck

@Pepe Sorry, I am just guessing, because you didn't give me a time stamp or anything to work with here, that you mean the point that the chuck actually breaks loose from the drill? In that case, I'm pretty sure that I got it done right there on the bench, but it was clumsy and looked better without it. If you're not physically strong enough to do it that way, you could try using a vice to hold the drill and a pipe on the Allen key to increase your leverage and see if that helps. If you still can't get it, let me know and I'll try to help you figure out another way to get it done. Best of luck!
