D&E In The Garage

Күн бұрын

I replace the sagging worn-out dirty headliner in the Jeep Cherokee for under $40 in about 2 hours.
Here is what you will need:
3 Yards of fleece from a fabric store (More if you vehicle's headliner is large, less if it is small. 3 was good for my Jeep Cherokee)
1-2 cans of 3M Supper 77 Spray Adhesive
For most headliners, the only tools you will need are a few screw drivers and maybe some star drivers. You will also need a good pair of scissors that you don't mind getting sticky

Oh. My. God. Finally someone on KZbin who understands the proper use of the time-lapse! Most of the time they either are non-existent where they are needed or so slow with droning narrative as to be more irritating than useful. Your fast time-lapse is refreshing. (If I miss something I can always rewind.) When searching these videos people are looking for resolutions that they can find, verify and then go apply. I personally don't need to hear the whole life story about how someone's 97 year old grandfather came from Eastern Europe where he used to wander around the house naked and .... blah blah blah. Videos need to be informative, clear and sometimes entertaining. They do not have to be long. Having said that, thank you for your attention to detail. So often videos start off with the assumption that the viewer has been watching the 400 other videos the content maker has previously created. That kind of familiarity works as a good characteristic of a pleasant video just as long as ALL of the information is still included in the video. Like the adhesive comments or the broken clip issue. Anyway. Thank you again, from this noob. Gonna go look for a discount tartan fleece! (a new subscriber)

I followed the video closely when I did the headliner on my 2002 Dakota. It came out perfect! I ended up buying a 90”X90” gray fleece throw blanket at Walmart for $9. Since the blanket matches my seats, my friends think I’m full of shit and had it professionally redone. There were some tears in the fiberglass shell which I repaired with fiberglass cloth and resin. I totally recommend this way of doing it yourself! Was about to buy a new headliner for about $600 with shipping. Between the 2 cans of 3M Super 77 and the cost of the blanket, I’m into my new headliner for $28.

Great video mine turned out nice! Only thing I would mention is in hot and humid areas it’s a good idea to let the headliner dry/cure inside or a good vented garage away from the sun for up to a day depending on how hot/humid so it won’t melt the adhesive!

I used to do headliners at an upholstery shop I worked at. Glued a scotch bright pad to a DA to remove all the old crumbling padding material. Worked really well when you get spots that don't like to come off, and it all needs to come off or it shows in the finished product. Another trick, if your headliner panel is cracked and broken like many I've seen, glue patches of canvas on the backside to hold it all together.

In doing this job I found a few helpful tricks if anyone is interested: 1-in removing the old spongy material from the headliner “board”, an abrasive brush on a drill really cleans the surface. Follow up with a shop vac with an upholstery brush attachment to clean up and then blow everything off with an air compressor. A really clean surface is critical to a smooth finish. 2-do a prep coat of spray adhesive to make the “board” really tacky before the spray steps in this video. Also, prop the board up vertically for spraying. You won’t have to fight the function of the rattle can as much and your back & knees will be grateful. Get a rattle can spray gun trigger attachment ($5-8). It really makes it easier for spraying several large even coats. 3-use tools to press the fabrics down firmly--think plastic scrapers, wallpaper roller tools, 3” paint rollers-look around the shop and be creative. 4-take your time. Ideally the finished product will last several years with no maintenance so spend extra time now and do it right. If possible make it a 2 day process. Day 1 is removal, prep, fabric adhesion. Let it dry for a day, maybe with some weight & clamps so really get the fabric secured. Day 2-re-install the headliner and do a clean job refastening all the trip, visors, etc. I think it would be easy to rush through the re-install stage after all this work and botch the job. A little rest and reset in between might give a better result. 4-fabric choice. If you want to go bold, avoid extremely linear patterns. Straight lines will show misalignment and the pattern will fight against the contours and curves of the board. Random patterns are more forgiving. Think tie dye, stars and planets or ocean scented vs checkerboard or pinstripe. Trust me--I wasted $100 of carbon fiber material learning this one.

Hard reflective surfaces are better than soft in car audio for the most part. Thx I really enjoyed this video!

I like the fabric choice, fleece should also insulate some, temperature and sound-wise. I've always figured that the headliner is someplace to hide something that gives the car some personality. I once did a bold paisley in a car that was white with a tan interior and did zebra stripes in a friend's car (it was one of those, I was fixing it and he was like "I don't care what you do, just make it look good," he was pissed for about 5 minutes when he first saw it and then decided he liked it.) I was under the impression that 77 wasn't strong enough to hold it up long term. I've always used the "high strength' 90, and both are stronger if you spray both sides, let them tack up and then glue together like a contact adhesive. If 77 works I may try that next time because it's somewhat repositionable (next car I want to do has t-tops so the headliner is relatively complicated). what I've had really good luck with is to put the headliner on some sawhorses or bodywork stands, put the cloth over it then fold the cloth halfway over, glue one half, then do the other half. That way you can line it all up before it has glue on it, there is no flipping things over and you won't get the fabric dirty (you never have it sitting on the exposed face).

So how long after you posted this did both AZ and NM send you your ID's? It's not loud, that belongs in a Jeep XJ! Nice choice and job.

Get some *archival Super77 and find the mini tube to focus the spray: with limited slits cut into the existing headliner, you can spray adhesive between the saggy stuff and the foam ceiling. Wait at least a minute to form tackiness, then push it up from the center to out..You will have to cut the excess off at the edges. If you *must do like here and totally remove the foam, do what HE says.

@@cluek9780 no do not do that , a . That will not work, b. It makes it a harder job when you fix it again , do it properly the first time

You probably already know this by now, but I saw a young lady replace her headliner and she used a hot iron, electric iron to smooth out the wrinkles and heat up the glue a little bit it looked terrific and worked well.

I didn't know that! That would be a great way to do repairs if it starts to fall. Thanks so much for the suggestion.

You can't iron fleece, its a polyester material,You can at really low temps but its not enough heat to actually help,so for him it would of been a disaster and lots of melted areas

3M Super Trim Adhesive is $45 alone; that Super 77 stuff will let the headliner sag when it gets hot. I actually like that Navajo headliner.. would look good with my "grey" blue XJ.

Nice job, now you need are those bangles like you see on Indian vechs. Also you need to get all the fuzz off and clean it well Next you need to put it on in sections and roll as you go. Other then that, nice job!

I want to do something like that for my 64 Falcon but it has no back board. It had fabric suspended by these metal bar things that are held in like springs. Id like to make a back board out of Masonite or something. That Indian relic pattern would look good with my car being a Falcon. Thanks for the idea.

I wish this vid had been around 30 years ago. I had a car I had to redo every six months because I did it wrong... It was an awful car, though.
