Went through a few sites on repotting. This video seems like the best one for orchids! It's efficient, simple and clear. Thanks so much!

@Kayla McNay nice :) I didn't know it'd work with aquaponics. Apparently many different types of herbs/plants do well growing in fresh, clean water.

I can't figure out how people grow orchids in moss without killing them. I tried putting moss around an orchid and must have done something wrong because it rotted the stem and killed it. Now, I have a couple that have moss mixed in with the bark, but not near the stem. There's such a learning curve with these beauties and I'm continuing to try to figure it out.

@Yixdy 10 ай бұрын
Nothing likes to have their stem be wet, especially consistently wet via something that holds water. For example if you pile up mulch too high on a tree and it touches the tree bark of the trunk, the water in the mulch will rot through into the trunk allowing bacteria, etc. A way in, possibly killing the tree

I used bark as that’s what was recommended to my dad when shopping for new potting soil for the orchid. Got Miracle Grow’s fast draining bark. Hope that it works well with this video! Can’t wait to see my little orchid get bigger and bloom again!

hi, i’ve been thinking about doing the same with mine. have you noticed any changes in your orchid? is it still healthy? mine is currently potted in peat moss since that’s how i got it from the nursery. i’m slightly worried about the repotting

@@tori6655 I just did the transplant a week ago and had to move it to a new location in my home. It's slow, but I've been checking the leaves and roots that are visible. They're healthy. I may have a small sunburn on a leaf, but still need to properly look at it to see. Orchids do take a while to regrow. Right now water has been the utmost importance for mine because of how fast the water goes through the bark soil.

@@glovanajnbaptiste2272I agree with you. I opted to order All Purpose Orchid Soil Potting Mix - Orchid Bark & Organic Perlite for Plants for my mini orchid. It came soaked in moss. I also ordered a new pot with plenty of openings for the roots to breath. Hopefully my baby can hang on until my items arrive. 🤞

If you live in a very humid place use bark & potting medium over a bunch of moss. If you live in a dry region, use more moss. The moss retains water much longer, but you don’t want root rot.

Agreed! Way to much moss esp in a clay pot even though the pot is porous you really need to keep a close eye on the roots particularly for beginners. Very easy to get root rot this way.

@laurachatfield4142
@laurachatfield4142 3 жыл бұрын
Problem is, it all depends on your climate. If the moss alone dries quickly enough, it's OK. But if it stays damp for too long, it will rot the roots. Using a clay pot helps because it breathes and the moss dries pretty fast. It takes experimentation and experience to know which is the right mix and type of pot for your climate

A lot of articles I've read talk about having to sterilize everything - is this necessary? It wasn't mentioned at all in this tutorial o_o And is it necessary to have one of those clear plastic baskets with the slits inside the pot itself? My orchid finally re-bloomed after nearly 3 years and I know it's outgrown it's original pot, but I'm terrified to repot it lol
@ScottyB0AllDay
@ScottyB0AllDay 4 жыл бұрын
Sterilizing probably isn’t a bad idea but definitely isn’t totally necessary. I’ve never sterilized anything before cutting any plant. I do suggest having a pot with slits in it inside of another pot that can be removed. That way you can ensure that each time it’s watered the roots are not in standing water, standing water around the roots will cause rotting very quickly.
@krankenheim13
@krankenheim13 4 жыл бұрын
If it’s your only orchid and you don’t plan on getting more then no it’s not completely necessary to sterilize. Orchids can transmit diseases between each other and you don’t want to infect a healthy orchid with a diseased one. That said, diseased orchids should be disposed of as not to infect the rest of your collection if you had more. If you got it to live 3 years that’s great. Try watching Miss Orchid Girl guides to repotting orchids. She has better info than shown here. And please do repot. You won’t hurt it. You’ll only make it happy and grow better.

Clay breathes and allows air to go through. Small clay pots actually will require you to water more often because the moss will dry out pretty fast. Using bark with moss doesn't make it stay moist for much longer. Just think about the climate you're in. I grow mine inside where there is air conditioning and a fan nearby and I have to water twice a week. They used to be on my porch, but then winter came and they were getting hit with direct sun, so I pulled them into my tiny apartment and put them in the only place I had space. I've got about 30 plants
