I have had an orchid for over a year now that refuses to die, no matter the crap it goes through! All the roots died, it got moldy, it got dry, all the leaves fell off. I swear I thought it was dead a dozen times by now. I started propagating it in water, and now it’s finally starting to grow new flowers! I can’t even believe it tbh.

I had an orchid that died from my inexperienced mistakes. First, I almost killed it by overwatering. By the time I got it back to good health, I was too scared to overwater it again, but I believe I ended up killing it by allowing too much time in between watering and it got too dry. I thought it was dead for good after all the leaves dropped, and the roots were all dried hard like sticks. I set it aside because I was going to use it in a terrarium because it made a good dead fallen tree by the little stream. Anyway, I noticed one day there was a tiny leaf popping up from the dead base of the plant, just off to the side. I looked closer and it was a fully formed baby orchid growing, with new tiny roots starting to poke thru. I never watered it, and was careful when misting the terrarium to not get it too wet as I didn't want it to get all floppy and rot. Looks to have gotten just the right amount of moisture from the terrarium and light bits of misting. I couldn't believe it. It was "dead" forever. Like, months. Plants always amaze me.

I once had a miniature orchid sitting on my window sill in my kitchen. Of course, it had beautiful blooms on it. Later, as expected, the flowers died and I cut off the spike. After a while, I pretty much ignored it. Eventually, I decided to throw it away since it had fallen into the sink a couple times, and I had given it up for dead. Luckily, I looked at it before I pitched it, and low and behold, it was starting to grow a very small new leaf. It survived for quite a time after that and grew a few more leaves. Never flowered, but was still really cute. Sometimes, they are tougher than you think.

You don't need to go to such extreme measures to save your orchids. Here in this video we see someone with a creative idea on how an orchid should be cared for....but no update at the end of the video to show her method works. I have 3 lovely orchid plants. I have had them for about 8 years and every year I am blessed to see the new stem pop out and begin to grow and then bloom beautiful orchids. The leaves on my plants have never rotted like she shows here. The trick is not to over water. They don't like to be over watered. In the entire time I have had these orchids, I have removed them from the moss or bark in the container, then cut the dead roots off as they do become unsightly over time. I wish I could post a picture of the plants as they are today. One small one I got as a gift 3 years ago... Is in full bloom. The others are beginning the new stem and will have blooms on them likely in about 2 weeks. She is right. Don't throw out orchids that have died off. find that green section and put it moss in the same pot you had and put it in a sunny location, window sil or some place where it can get sunlight but not bake it in the sun. I am not an expert... but I do love my orchids.

I wish I knew everthing you do about Orchiads! My fiancee bought me a 40 dollar beautiful dark blue and dark purple one and its was fine, reblooming from the same pot.. and when he went of town, the petals fell off and I am still devasted! I did what ur video said althought I had to work with what came with it, Im havent gotten around to the clear pot and correct potting soil which I am going to do, but the leaves are big and beautiful at the bottom and when I took it apart it has a black rotten band around the outer and I cleaned it, cut all the dead roots off and I even got bark pieces anyways my mom told me to cut the healthy green stake and it had buds on it, so I cut it... and nothing else so far, it does have a new leaf bloomed on top of the other leaves.. Im trying so hard to keep tis orchard alive and I havent seen it bloom back yet..

The original roots have re-hydrated and new leaves have grown out of the original crown (plus a flower stem is budding on the other side) rather than growing a whole new new baby plant. Should I just leave it in the glass vase with the moss from now on, rather than in a pot with orchid compost? It seems so happy now.

when I first started getting into Orchids, I'd buy the 'dead/discounted' orchids from places like Home Depot. I only lost one to fungus (and frustration, admittedly) out of a dozen, so it was well worth the time and money. They're surprisingly hardy plants, stubborn, and lovely once you learn to listen to them.

I too entered into orchid growing through specimens sold on clearance at home improvement centers. Just last week I brought home two for $3.00!!! Once they were freed from their packaging and the old media and dead tissue were removed, along with a few days rest, they are already beginning to thrive again. Of course they have both passed through their flowering phase but their leaves are plumping up and their spikes are still healthy. Of the 22 orchids I have brought home under similar circumstances, only 1 has taken a fatal turn, and that instance was entirely my own fault. I dropped her and her case shattered.... subsequently she developed crown rot in an unseen injury at the base of the crown. Prior to this accident, she was in prime condition. I’m hoping I can reclaim something from her root ball which still survives.

@@VetsrisAuguste - Spikes? Your orchid has spikes? I have only had a few, but none has been spikey. They have air roots (may have a fancy name that I don’t know of in English) though. Is that what you mean by spikes? Curious... ☺️
@VetsrisAuguste4 жыл бұрын
@@lottatroublemaker6130 I was referring to the flower spikes (inflorescences) which had faded before I bought these on clearance. They are no longer in bloom as I mentioned above, but they are still quite verdant (the spikes) and the nodes have active bracts so I have left them alone, opting not to cut them. It is typical to refer to the inflorescences as “flower spikes” or “spikes” (for short) when discussing orchids in English. My earlier comment was mostly to do with the general good health of orchids that might otherwise look unhealthy to the untrained eye and not necessarily to do with the overall progress my new Orphan Orchids’ growing cycles. I was tagging onto what had been said by @Lavinia De Mortalium

Yeah, very difficult to grow in such a format in the home and actually be able to provide adequate moisture, depending on the variety

@@jpcreativeimagery it's just an add ice orchid. I've had it for two years and now it's not dormant. I must be doing something ok

I'd love to hear what you think about foliar feeding of orchids and in this case it wouldn't be exactly fully or it would be feeding the roots using a foliar spray

I did exactly what you said and one of them came back it's beautiful and another one has all roots and that's it and another one I'm not sure should I cut the stem and separate these roots the stem looks like it's dead
