A step by step guide on how to repot seedlings grown in rockwool, including timing, growing media, and how to reduce the risk damaging plants.
In a previous video I showed how easy it is to sow seeds using rockwool cubes. Rockwool is a mess free way of planting seeds, just pop the seeds into the rockwool, and about 7-14 days later you should have tens of seedlings for replanting. There’s no need to get hands dirty, and sowing is very fast.

Excellent Video -- Good Sound; Good Camera Angles; Good Lighting; Good Scripting; Good Pacing; practical, useful, informative content -- AND you avoided the "CHEESEY" special effects that plague so many and mark them as inexperienced, ego bound, amateurs. Well Done, Sir!

After you've inserted the seed into the rockwool, should should they be kept in the dark or under light?

I just did this to my seedlings and their leaves have curled quickly after 😢 I made the soil quite moist but im wondering if i overwatered it -- could that be why they've curled?
@AllotmentBook

This may be a normal reaction to repotting that should settle down after a few days. If the pots drain well after watering then overwatering is unlikely to be a problem (the soil should not be allowed to dry out). Other potential causes are the soil being too dry, or a nutrient deficiency.

i use this method and my plants looking withered, is that normal?
@AllotmentBook
@AllotmentBook 2 жыл бұрын
this does not sound normal - withering could be for a number of reasons. When I transplant from the warm propagator to a pot, I like to keep the potted seedlings in a protective area to help them acclimatise to a colder environment (plastic greenhouse, polytunnel, greenhouse etc) - I keep track of the temperature using a thermometer that records min and max temperatures

whats the point of using rockwool to transplant them to a pot that small .
@AllotmentBook
@AllotmentBook Жыл бұрын
Using small pots allows many pots to fit on a small windowsill for growing on until they can be moved into my (unheated) polytunnel when the warm weather arrives. If I had a big windowsill (or many!), a conservatory, or other warm light area I would move directly into bigger pots!

do you think rockwool is better than coir to start seedlings? seems like rockwool is less mess but might be more expensive in the long run.
@AllotmentBook

thank you for your comment. I prefer to start small seeds, like tomatoes and lettuce, in rockwool cubes, and larger seeds by preparing small pots filled with compost made from coco bricks. Rockwool cubes are very fast and easy to use, mess free etc - but are not big enough for some seeds (like squash, cucumber etc.) Compost made from coco bricks is also mess free, but takes me longer to prepare. I find coco really reliable, I think because of the balance between moisture and air.

I have always used Grodans Rockwool but I am going to try coco coir and grow dots with recharge. The coco way is a lot cheaper.

I've been growing for several years now and I have never used anything but Grodans Rockwool cubes and mini slabs. China just built a Rockwool plant and they manufacture cheaper products. I tried them once but I had rather buy American made when I can.
