To make more of these stories possible, please join us as a monthly supporter: flatbushcats.o.... Feral cats may not want to be near you, but they're still great moms for their babies! This video shows how you can give feral cats a safe space to raise their young. While the kittens can be socialized and adopted, a feral adult cat cannot be socialized and does not want to be indoors. The safest and best place for them is outdoors - after they have been spayed and vaccinated.

One day i woke up in the morning to a constant meowing outdoor. I went out to check and saw a cat hiding in a bush on my frontyard. It's no older than 4 months it seems. She seemed lost and was looking for someone, she was cautious but curious when i tried to approach her. My gf suggests that we feed her, i refused at first because i don't want her to get attached to me, since i've never had any cat before. But in the end, i did end up feeding her, she's so happy that i did too.. Fast forward half a year later, and she ended up staying here and gave birth to 2 kittens. I guess im a cat owner now

I think the mom may have some bob-tail genes making it like that, there super cool and also less annoying to cuddle with since you don't have a tail wacking you and anything you have
@razorransom1795
@razorransom1795 5 жыл бұрын
There's definitely a Manx Gene or a Japanese bobtail Gene in there. Though my bet is manx since the other two kittens have full tails, the runt had a stumpy tailed. My mom saved a Manx boy who had kittens to my brothers Turkish Algora, and some of the kittens had similar tails so I researched the Manx breed facts. My little ones are two of the kittens, one who looks like her aunt did and the other is looks like a cat in tux with his rumpy riser tail, my Cutie's.

Razor Ransom I’m actually thinking that there was an accident, since they’re feral, but it’s possible that they could have a manx gene or bobtail gene
@razorransom1795
@razorransom1795 5 жыл бұрын
@@nevergoingbacktothis Possible, however, how the fur lays on the stump points to it being natural. It reminds me of my FLuffy, who's tail is rumpy riser form. It doesn't look like an accidental cut off, it looks like it's been that way since birth. It's possible since Manx cats can be born as no tail, riser, rumpy riser, stubs or full tails. His siblings had three full tails, him was rumpy riser and his bro had a stumpy like their father. We gave away a few, but all are in good health. So it's possible to have a majority of tailed, and a few with the actual Manx Gene. Those kittens didn't look too old and didn't go far and looked well protected by that shed. They also looked really good so it has to be Gene wise.

It’s funny because a few months ago I had the exact OPPOSITE problem. There’s this stray momma cat who always comes around where we live and she grew quite fond of us. For a while she had disappeared and she came back PREGNANT and decided to have her kittens there. The mom is really friendly, so much so that she would even try to call her babies to come and see us. But the kittens were not having it. Finally we lured them into a kennel and took them to a place where they could get trained and used to people and hopefully adopted. She had SIX of them and I find that really funny because the mom is an extremely tiny cat lol. We later got her fixed so no more babies. Guess she’s ours now lol.

@@GoatSimGang I get that people have mixed feelings about cats and dogs being spayed and neutered. But in reality it actually prevents the world from becoming over populated with domesticated animals without homes who will eventually end up either being on the streets or put in shelters. If we hadn’t done that she would’ve definitely kept having more and more kittens do to all the stray cats in the area. That’s not fair to her or her potential babies because the sad reality is a large majority of kittens don’t end up finding homes even when brought to facilities where they can be adopted.

The mother was beautiful. I have a soft spot for calicoes and torties, I was asked to take on a calico kitten that wasn’t fully weened and I had her for 20 years. I’ve had other cats that cracked 20 but she was the only one who always saw me as mum. She would often sleep in the crook of my arm and would often paddle me and suck on my clothes. Some one in the U.K. did the same for our two brother kittens with their feral mother. It’s far better to have two kittens, it’s amazing the amount of energy they use up playing with each other. The play is also far more 'rough and tumble' than any human could do with them.

It's crazy how different cats can be. One day a feral cat approached my grandpa and kept meowing at him while he was doing yardwork until he followed her behind the garage. What happened was she had given birth to a litter of 4 kitten in barrel, but it was raining and said barrel was slowly filling with water and the mama cat was smart enough to know she needed help with the kitties. They were all taken in and given this kind of treatment, but the mama cat absolutely loves my grandpa because I guess she knows what happened and was grateful her kitties are safe. She's super affectionate with everybody now, years after and hates being outside now.

I rescued a feral mama, abused by our neighbors severely (they would kick her and throw things at her). She was like this...no, much worse. It has taken 2 years for her to trust us and stop randomly attacking us. Now she only gets spooked by weird gestures or noises, and will swat. Animals can experience fear and trauma too, and you just have to be patient with them. Give them the space and time they need, show them you are safe.

It was a couple, male and female, that came with his cabin he bought in the woods right off the reservation. This was a gift for my my families’ male cat had a brother that just passed away, the male cat is 17 years old now! So I got him a companion, but we had to surrender him & couldn’t afford a UTI issue he had. He was beautiful and my brother is always a cat’s best friend. He couldn’t afford him when he moved. @@GigaBraumChad That's silly. I know someone who has been badly injured by their own dogs, because they tried to separate them when they were fighting over a spot to look from. The dogs always got along really well other than that, and were not aggressive normally. You just have to understand animals, which does require some effort on your part - there is no deceit going on, so talking about 'trust' doesn't make sense. No one acts the same in all contexts and conditions. People act in the same way, that if you have someone who is emotionally out of control, they can do something that they wouldn't normally do, either. Because people are animals, too. And most times, when a cat bites you under normal conditions, they don't break skin, etc. It's just a way to communicate to you to stop what you are doing. Only if you keep ignoring what they try to communicate, they will escalate it to get you to stop. If you ignore the body language of animals, their vocalizations, etc., and get scratched or bitten, it is your fault for not paying attention.

Its hard to keep feral cats as pets, but it can be done. We have a former feral tom (adult male, they can be really difficult to live with as they spray to mark their territories and live to fight for dates) as a couch potato now. We purchased a derelict property and he came with it, vet says he was in the 3-5 year age range when we neutered him. It was a lengthy process to get him to like us, then get him to the vet for neutering and shots, then teach him what a litter pan is. It did work in the end and he is now our sweet couch cushion monster. The main difference between him and our other cats is that he does not instantly like all humans, and that he got really fat on house cat rations (he is now on a diet, don't be mad at me). He is a happy guy (crazy happy and sweet actually) and it was completely worth it, but it is a lot of work at the start. Of our cats he is the least interested in going out on the deck, hes been there and done that and is not interested LOL.

@@notzqhra There is a good reason why. It becomes very difficult to socialize feral cats. Now, to my reason why you shouldn't train a feral cat, if you are selfish and have absolutly no reasons to adopt a feral cat. Cats are very sensitive and can get easily traumatized, to which they will change their behaviour according to that. This should make sense to you, because if you are traumatized, your behaviour changes. Because feral cats at a certain age aren't socialized with humans, they fight back for one reason: they are scared and afraid. Now imagine you are forced to live with something, you are scared of your life and you are sensitive. That's scary and horrific for you, also for feral cats. This is a nightmare for them. This is exactly why, they keep hissing, biting and scratching. Obviously, we find it sometimes funny, but they don't. It would take a long time to socialize them, but they still might bite, hiss and scratch. At the time the feral cat is socialized, you could have already adopt several cats from a shelter, who are not feral. The feral cat is also then traumatized. This is a total waste of time and a tortue for feral cats. Surely, you might not agree with me, but does your (feral) cat speak to you and speak about the experienced pain and trauma it has been through? Because cats can't talk and you would get a different impression, if you don't understand what I mean. Only socialize adult feral cats, if you have a very good reason. And if you have a very good reason: try not to stress the feral cat too much. Try to make as less contact as you can, while the feral cat tries to trust you and keeping a distance from you. Let the feral cat approach you itself. Don't force it to approach and trust you.

They are now chilling in my living room in a makeshift cardboard bed. A tupperware of tuna next to her and a bowl of water on the other side. I'm not sure what to do with her, but I think I'm gonna keep them safe and sheltered until the kittens are alright. Any tips would be great. Thank you for this video it really helped

Hi! I work cat rescue! If mom is friendly that’s awesome-kittens will generally start eating wet food around 5 weeks but will still nurse until 8 weeks which is when kittens can be weaned! I’d recommend reaching out to local rescues to help cover vetting of the kittens and momma (at the very least getting them spayed/neutered). Another tip: pellet cat litter (specifically yesterday’s news) won’t produce dust, and is excellent for kittens because it’ll prevent upper respiratory infections, which kittens are prone to!

Theres a chance it died because it was outside, indoor cats mostly love longer than outdoors, true that they are happier outside, that doesnt mean they can't be happy indoors, srry if this sounds hurtful but a very close person to me saved a cat snd made it indoors perfectly fine but put it for adoption cuz she had more pets and a mutual friend of ours adopted it, we thought "how lucky we are" it was far from the truth, the former friend of us Let ot roam free cuz he thought it was ok and the cay needed it, the cat got ranover by s truckbbut it doesnt died instantly, it hide in a place where t wasnt reachable and only its meowing was hard and it meowed with pain and died slowly, the person that saved tje cat was devastated when she knew and also got angry and stopped being friends with that irresponsable owner, i did the same because i dont understand that logic. Many people that rescue cats they dont do it so the cats end uo living in the streets Again, dying sooner than they have to. When you do that to an adopted cat you are saying " fuck u" to the person that saved and took care/domesticated the cat/kitten (if strays or ferals) and you are sending the effort and Money that person spended on the cat to the toilet(specially if it dies outside the first few days it got adopted) people that rescue this cats so they can be adopted, do it so the cat can be safe and happy, not necessarily so t can be 70% happy, 30% safer. I hope your next cat is indoor and truly safe, i don't tell you this for your own good but for the sake of your next cat, and so that the effort of the person that saved it doesnt go to waste.

@Amber Genteman yep that cat was most likely killed, next time givr it to a shelter or person but dont mle it outdoors unless you live in a farm, otherwise, people like to think their cats abandon them but the realityis they ar either dead or got captured by a cat rescuer that thought it was a stray, or got captured to be sold.

Treasure the memories. Most cats that have been outside for awhile prefer to go back out. It doesn't mean that he/she won't enjoy being inside with their human, it just means they like the outside adventure and exploring because of their natural curiosity.

It's because mama's a calico! Basically at a certain point when she was developing, her cells had to decide if they were going to use the X genes they got from mom or the X genes they got from dad. If I remember right, she can pass on either of those copies to her kittens, so the females are often more calicos and the males end up looking like their non-calico grandparents. Veritasium did a vid that explains it much better than I am. I think it's called "why women are stripey" if you're interested.

She eventually give birth to 3 kittens, just like these, their names were: •Callie jr (looked just like her mom) •Pumpkin (A sweet, orange/white tabby.) •and Storm (a fuzzy gray calico) Pumpkin was the most social, and me and her grew extremely close, she loved rubbing up against me and making a lot of biscuits, even when she walked. The kittens treated the hay barrels like a playground, while mama love to sleep on top of them, earning her the nickname, “queen of the hay barrels”.

Rescues like Flatbush are pros. They would have scouted the area thoroughly before leaving, and come back the next day to do a final once over of the area. Also, the kittens were young enough that they would not have had the strength to go far from their siblings, even if they had the mind to (which they wouldn't have had.) Rest assured, no "kitten was left behind!" 👍

You might want to think about that. Every little bit helps for these kind-hearted souls who scour the cities for kittens in need, much like the ones you saw in this video. They have to pay to have these kids neutered and spayed somehow. Oftentimes, it comes out of their own pockets. Cheers.

puddy cat They got lucky this time. A lot of feral mothers aren’t in very good shape; in fact, that’s often how rescuers are able to catch them in the first place (they’re either desperate for food or too injured to run away). In those cases, they often have to separate them so both have a chance to heal. Most rescue organizations do get to foster the kittens with an older cat who is experienced with caring for kittens, though, so they can still be properly socialized.

There are studies showing higher incidence of behavioural problems among indoor only cats. And you think you know how a cat feels based on a minute of footage of it playing with its children.
