In this video we tear apart the Volvo Transmission because it is 31 years old and has never had any attention. we disassemble and reseal everything with some good old (Volvobond) to ensure that leaks will not happen again.
We then prim and paint the transmission with a tiny bit of gold in it. What do you think of the paint color? It reminds us of an old aluminum look which seems fitting considering the car is 31 years old.

Problems here: The with of the gasket is calculated in he clearance of the shaft bearings. So if you remove them chances are pretty good your preload will be wrong unless you replace the shims with the correct width to compensate for the lack of gasket. Maybe it will be fine, maybe it will eat itself early. For a m47 II, you have to pull the rear housing off while leaving he 5th gear assembly on the transmission. Just pulling off the case without pushing against the 5th gear. The only thing resisting the pulling force is the synchro slider keys. You can pull the 5th gear apart and damage the sliders, ask me how I know. This might be an m47 I, I don’t know but I’d be willing to bet you don’t know either. Basically poo on you for making this video putting out inaccurate information. If anyone needs it, they can find the m45/7 greenbook on the ozvolvo archive. Definitely consult that if you are working on one of these gearboxes.

I appreciate your insight but the car has been running now for three years since I’ve made this video the transmission is still solid has no leaks. I’ve made three trips to Portland from Boise Idaho, which is around 8 Hour Drive 3 different times. I put everything back together the way it was taken apart. There’s no lash nothing is grinding. I’ve change the oil in the transmission twice and there’s no material.

I've gotten m45r in my volvo, hasn't had any maintenance done to it since -79 except for new oil, and except for some linkage bushings that need changing the gearbox feels amazing.

This one was driven hard, after I stalling the bronze shifter bushings from ipd it bot much better . Especially after switching to redline gear oil. It feels great . The clutch peddle is so light it’s Ridiculous

@@buildbros2088 What gearbox is that by the way? Is it the m46 with electronic overdrive or is it the m47mk1/2? The m47 from what I've gathered is one of the weaker transmissions they made. Am thinking of installing m47r in the future as I really would like 5 gears. the -r stands for rear by the way, it's Volvos custom rear mounted transmission.

Most helpful video I’ve found gents. How many lbs did you end up Torquing the rear transmission casing bolts to?
@buildbros2088
@buildbros2088 3 жыл бұрын
I used a spread sheet I found online for the bolt size and the material . Bolt grade and going into aluminum. I honestly can’t remember. If you figure out the bolt size and grade I can get torque specs for you

I am just trying to fix the gasket on my m46 and well I changed it. The problem now is, I don't know if this spring on the transmission cover is suppose to go underneath the selector plate or on top. Did you guys just slap it back on after changing the gasket at 8:18?

How did y’all get the metal circle (not sure what to call it) out to expose the bolt that hods the drive shaft connector on?
@buildbros2088
@buildbros2088 4 жыл бұрын
bryce noonan we removed the complete drive shaft . Unbolted from the rear end , took the carrier out . The metal ring has bushings connected to it that go into a round rubber insulator . I used a flat blade screw driver to pry the metal ring with the bushings out .

it's Driveshaft Transmission Guide Pin. ipd sells. tap the end of guide pin from the sides using small heavy sludge hammer (use pb blaster and torch first) it will eventually pop out. nothing is holding it in from underside. dont try prying it around bolt holes-you'll bend the outwards but can tap from sides and turn holes so the dont line up with driveline holes -it willhelp pb blaster get into seams and loosen.

I appreciate the insight, we actually did put the transmission back in like this it was in good shape. Just turned out to be in the shifting mechanism in the transmission bushings I bought the bronze bushings from IPD and I put red line oil in the transmission the other issue I had was the pilot bearing in the back of the fly wheel was out and it was making contact between the pressure plate and the clutch had fallen out someone had improperly installed it. The car runs and drives great I do need to do coil overs the thing is still a little boaty even with the IPD sway bars. And the top hats are cracked. Aside from that maybe do some different wheels that fit better. It fires right up I’ll do a video on it and post it in its current state
