I am in no way a professional prop maker or resin caster. This is just the way I have found to use resin casting to where it is simple and cheap enough for small cosplay things.

This happened to me today: I was waiting for the model magic to dry and I told everyone not to flip it over because it wasn't dry on the bottom and I was letting it dry then I moved the model magic away. My cousin started to SQUISH the clay into a monster ball and as soon as I got downstairs to check on it, I saw that the odango piece I made for Chibi Moon didn't look like half of a circle. I tried to mild it back to shape but sadly... I threw it away. I was waiting for 2 days for it to dry and I was so close! Sjvejskwdjbd why do little kids have to ruin my cosplans?! 😡😡😡😡

Oh my gosh thank you for this!! I'm considering doing resin casting for the first time with an upcoming cosplay, and you made it look way less intimidating than I thought it was

Might I suggest for such a simple set of forms, you use the squirty silicone you get in a gun to make you moulds. Get a tin or something smooth the silicone doesn't like adhering too, then squirt a load onto the surface and press the master models into the goop... leave until it sets... then you have a hard wearing, reusable mould. The silicone stinks, so you can't do it in the house, but it costs only a pittance, compared to the branded produces you're talking about. Silicone will also give you a shiny surface. Just a tip, from someone who does a lot of this...

I'm using the same clay. It may be a silly question, but does the clay have to be dry before you paint on the mold maker? And can I just liquid latex? I have it on hand and don't want to pay for the mold maker which is now $18...

Finally in these days I'm working on my Sailor Jupiter costume so this tutorials I saved from you years ago will come in handy. I was so uninspired even if I had most of my costume made and I need just to assemble things :) For my jewels I'm using resin with a mold so I don't have to use the clay, I like my resin, it's super lightweight and I just added some nail polish to make it look green and sparkly

Resins will cure eventually even if the mix is off. But it can be an extremely long time. Have you seen people using silicon caulk and corn starch for casting? It looks super interesting and cheap.

Hey i got some mold builder about two days ago so i can make amethyst's gem for comic con but when i opened the container and put my brush in, it didnt seem very liquidy just a lil stiff and when i tried stirring it, it just made it lumpy. I even tried adding water but it didnt work. What do i do?

I would have never thought of pouring more resin over the top to correct the clouding.. Genius! PS the heart you made looks to be the same size as the heart on your snoopy shirt.. lol

The fumes are not that bad. Especially if you're doing small pieces like the ones i was making

Thank you so much for all the tutorials u do! They are amazing and help me a lot! :D I have a newbie question about resin casting. You mentioned in the video u have to use some kind of mold release spray or WD-40. Do I have to spray the clay shape before applying the mold builder and let it dry or is it to spray the mold which is already ready and just before pouring the resin mixture into it? I know this video is like three years old... But do you know/remember how much everything for the resin casting, clay, and molding (stuff) cost all together? I have to stay on a tight budget... :(

I would say, that resin casting is not cheap, so if you're on a tight budget, I would not consider this option. :)

I wanted to try a similar process for a larger object. Do you think it would work? I want to make a resin cast of Mirai Kuriyama's sword from beyond the boundary, I realize it will be a little pricey considering the amount of product I would need. Are there any other 'cheap' alternatives to the products you used for this casting that would work for a larger casting?

Resin would be very heavy. I suggest cutting the sword out of Plexiglas or plastic then decorating it accordingly.

Hiya! So glad I found your videos! I'm making my own Sailor V cosplay and it's really my first time making anything so your videos have really helped! However for my sailor V costume she does have that Crescent moon mark on her forehead so I was wondering do you think I should resin cast that and then get glue safe for my skin or do you have any other methods you think would work better? +Zarch yeah if you dont add color to the resin it will be clear and you can paint the symbol on the back and it will show through from the front

Hey don't use the Stuff type using, but silicon putty, if it's a money issue, use gloves, silicon caulk, cornstarch and a bowl with soapy water, squeeze the silicon into the water let it soak while your scrunching it together then cover it with corn starch and roll into a dough, put vaseline on the item and push into the silicon and let dry. It works a lot better and you don't have to cut anything away. His

So I have some questions: 1) I'm going to use resin to make the moon shape for the choker and I wanted to know what glue you used...is it that glue that you purchased at home depot? 2) I'm would like to use resin to make the odango hair jewels and then attach it to clay...it's this possible with the backing that you used and if so what glue can I use?

Nakisha Thomas 1) yes it is the same glue from home depot. 2) it should work with any sort of super glue.

Hey so I know this video is a little older, but I'm interested in resin and stuff. I've heard that it's very fumy to work with, and that concerned me because I have a bird. The only reason I haven't used resin yet is because I'm worried that the fumes will hurt her. What did you do with your bird while you were working with the resin?

I've never used nail polish on resin for shine. I feel like it will chip pretty easy. You can use our on the underside for color or sparkle but as a top coat it might make it shiny but not be very permanent

+Gabrielle May Simplicity just released a pattern for Sailor Moon costumes this June! I bought it at Joann's and I have been using it to make my costume. It's so much easier to use this pattern, I think, than trying to follow deviantart tutorials and altering patterns. You can buy it off Simplicity's website and the pattern number is 1092. You can also buy it at Joann's. As for the accessories, I actually purchased mine off etsy. There is a seller by the name of Catzia Collectables that makes tiaras. There are tons of other sellers who sell the broaches and choker accessories for a decently low price and they are usually made out of resin. Check them out!

+PlatinumCyGirl it's true. You'd have to look it up, because depending on where you live and the availability of the products, it could vary from what i have. Good clay is just about as expensive as resin where i live. But there are cheap clays as well but they won't hold up as well. Resin is my personal choice. I like the way it looks and hold up. So i put time and money into using it.
