Sorry for my confusion. If I want to repaint an old board in white to cover up teh yellowed foam underneath, do I simply have to sand the board down and then apply pigment mixed resin for the colour?

Howzit Bill I live North Shore and wanted to refinish some old boards if you’re on Oahu can I buy you lunch and tap your brain about materials. Your boards are classic and everyone knows this work in the islands. Incredible to watch the master at work.

Two guys that are the guru's of finish work are Randy Rerick and Ed Surfoss both on the North Shore. I have to say they are better than me, I'm kinda out of the loop and only do it for fun. If you want to meet me at Church where I teach, after service we can sit in our cafe and I'll buy you lunch and we can talk refinish work. Aloha Bill

Bill Stonebraker I know those names as well-legends. My family is all from the north shore and my dad use to surf professionally with Dino Miranda. I will absolutely take you up on that generous offer. Mahalo nui loa, a hui hou.

When you were brush painting the board first was it just the pigment it wasn’t mixed with any resin ?
@billstonebraker53047 жыл бұрын
It was pigment mixed in finish resin. Once dry it was light sanded and a clear finish resin applied
@billstonebraker53046 жыл бұрын

Aloha uncle Ben,I know this videos old but hoping you'll somehow see this and be able to answer a few questions, 1. Is the tint basically like a primer to my solid finish coat? 2. Would you use the same grit papers for a standard palm sander? 3.did you use straight resin for the pressure dings or some kind of filler? Mahalo,hope you're staying safe in these crazy times
@billstonebraker53043 жыл бұрын
1.Tint will not hide imperfections in the foam. It is like a clear coat w/ see thru color and can be polished out as you see in my video. Solid color hides any imperfection and needs a clear coat of resin then can be polished out. Tint is a standalone finish coat. “primer” is not needed for solid pigment colors but you do need a clear finish coat over the solid color to polish out the board. 2. Yes use same grit for palm sander. 3. If you are tinting the board use clear resin to fill pressure dents so tint will be even but sand before tinting. If a solid color, body filler works well. Aloha Bill

@@billstonebraker5304 @Bill Stonebraker did you use tint or solid? I'm planning on really sanding it down and taking care of all the pressure dents and Patching all the bad spots really well then sanding it after,then from there I'm at a loss to what's best.just going to do a plane white with a wrap around(deck,rails and bottom) different color on the nose...but from what you've said it sounds like a tint saves me the step of putting a clear coat over it if I did a solid.Thank you for your help.Tore my rotator cuff so no surfing for a bit,figured I'd try and fix up a board and send it to my nephew back home

@@chrisjerson5622 tint for areas w/o dings or discoloration and solid for ugly areas that needed covering up.

Bill, you stated that you use polyester resin with either a tint or a solid color added.......does the resin have a hardener added too?
@jonathanjackson88295 жыл бұрын
Yes, I now hear you say it's catalyzed when you were stirring the red.
@billstonebraker53045 жыл бұрын
Yes there is a polyester resin catalyst needed to harden the resin when stirring in your tint or solid color pigment

What grit do you use to lightly sand the lightening bolt and yellow patch?
@billstonebraker53047 жыл бұрын
220 grit or if you're careful 100 grit just something to take the gloss off without sanding through

Hi Bill I was watching these videos with great enthusiasm so I experimented using pigments in resin to coat over an old board. I sanded the board almost back to the weave for maximum binding but when I applied the pigmented resin it started to streak and separate. Any ideas what I was doing wrong? I really want to do up this old San Juan single fin but won't attack this until I know for sure. Yours came out so smooth and perfect. Please help if you're able. Cheers Ben
@billstonebraker53048 жыл бұрын
Streaking or pigment separation can be caused by a few things it happens to me as well. Make sure resin isn't old and sluggy. If you add a little styrene to the pigmented finish resin that should solve your problem. If you are doing solid pigment you will need to but a clear gloss coat over it after it dry and light sanded. Make sure you are not using marine resin but polyester finish resin. Soak your hands in acetone and right away wipe down the board by doing so you make sure there is no foreign material or oils on the board. Let me know who it comes out. Bill
@percyagnes26888 жыл бұрын
Awesome thanks Bill. I'll add a little styrene and give it a crack on an old board first. I'll let you know how it turns out. Yes I'm using solid pigment so I'll take note of your advice there too. Cheers mate I appreciate it.
@billstonebraker53046 жыл бұрын
If there is any wax or oils from your hands sometimes that causes the streaking. Sounds like you sanded the board well, I will sometimes get my hand wet with acetone and go over the board to clean it. Also if you add styrene to the finish coat it will cause the resin to flow a little better.

Yes
@billstonebraker53046 жыл бұрын
Some tint and some solid. With tint you are able to see through to the foam or stringer. If I want to cover up a ding or bad spot in the board I will use a solid color. You can see it with the board I'm doing. Yellow tint, red solid.

THE LORD"s blessings thank you. Psalm (106:1): praise the Lord oh give thanks to the Lord for he is good for his loving-kindness is Everlasting. He has given your hands skill and wisdom. Praise GOD for how he has the restore us to HIMSELF. I I think I am this board before it's restoration and I certainly at times still see all the imperfections can't wait till full restoration. May all who hear Be reconciled to GOD.
