@@billstonebraker5304 I watched it Bill. Good job getting the rocker correct- The only one I did was not quite so successful and surfed a little oddly afterwards. We are probably close to the same age ( 72 for me) . These days, for me also, it is almost all SUP with occasional surfing and flat water windsurfing. We moved from Colorado to just up the hill from Torrance Beach in 1960, at the end of 6th grade. The surfing explosion was well underway. Your friend and fellow pastor Rick Irons and his brothers Jimmy and Phil were royalty there. All of us gremmies were awestruck by their surfing abilities and general air of coolness. An incredible era ! I thank the lord for letting me survive it and for the many blessings that have been bestowed on me since . Mahalo and Aloha from Monterey.

Dear Bill. Thanks to you I am restoring a surfboard and I am using your video as guide! 100% Million thanks! I am now about to "paint" it with polyester resin + black opaque pigment + catalyser. My question regards to the amount of opaque pigment to add to the poly resin as I want to cover 100% what is underneath (I have repaired a lot of bumps with Qcell filler + resin and also the original board design has a pattern I want to cover). THANKS again!
@billstonebraker53043 жыл бұрын
Marcal, black covers well. If I were to do a 10' board I would use about 16oz of finish resin and two tongue depressor scoops of black. As you mix splash the color on the side of the mixing container to make sure it is opaque. If you can see thru add a little more color. Blessings Bill

Hello again Bill! I am almost done with my surfboard restoration project that I started thanks to YOU! (many thanks again) and of course following your steps. I have two final questions PLEASE: (1) after the resin+pigment coat, do I need a final resin-only coat before polishing? and (2) would the polishing process fix/cover a little scratch marks from sander I made in a corner using 40 grit sanding pad? THANKS in ADVANCE!
@billstonebraker53043 жыл бұрын
Yes a final gloss coat with finish resin is how I finish the board and then polish. Deep scratches under the pigment coat will still be visible but when you do the final gloss coat those scratches will disappear. Make sure you light sand, by hand, the pigmented coat before the gloss coat. Any scratches in the final gloss coat can be rubbed out by using 320 then 400 then 600 wet or dry sand paper with water then a polish with some grit and finally a finish polish like in my video
@colinolive90635 жыл бұрын
Awesome result. Was that just normal resin with the pigment on the first initial coat?
@billstonebraker53045 жыл бұрын
Finish resin is the final coat w/ color pigment added. You can use laminating resin with color added when fiberglassing the board. But what I did was only finish resin with color pigment added.

May 20, 2018 - I'm very impressed. Thanks for all the details of your process. It really came out beautiful! *Questions:* 1) two times you referred to thinning the resin with "styrene" - did you mean to say acetone? I have looked up Styrene Thinner, and it seems to be a thing... but it also seems to be a "preference" for people wanting thinner, workable resin. Would acetone be sufficient? 2) What are the white, covering painted patches made out of? The ones you made before the red to hide dark spots. White-colored resin? The red was colored, resin, right? What about the white for color patches? 3) Then at 4:36 you say "...and then I glossed it" Does that mean you made up a batch of glossy, clear finish resin and paint-brushed it on? Sorry for all the questions. _61-year old surfer-has-been_ that wants to restore an old 9' 8" x 22" x 3.5" longboard that was laying out by a dumpster - and it's pretty thrashed. Even the garbage man would not take it. Which leads me to... 4) If you were to sell this, what would you ask? (I'm trying to figure out whether I should just buy a used longboard ($300-900 here in Carlsbad/Encinitas) or put the money and craft-time into restoring. ;-)
@billstonebraker53046 жыл бұрын
1-Acetone cleans the resin off your hands and brush by dissolving the resin, much like paint thinner is used in cleaning up enamel paint. Styrene is used for thinning resin so it flows more evenly. Honestly I have used acetone to thin resin on rare occasions but it’s not recommended when you can get styrene. 2-Finish resin with white pigment then lightly sanded 3-Gloss coat is clear finish resin applied over the red pigment and black pin line that is lightly sanded before the gloss coat is applied. 4-Depends on who made the board. If it is a name brand board and can be done as you see in the video it may be worth it but if you’ve never done it before you might want to take it to a surf shop and see what they would charge. It can be a real mess if you’ve never done a recondition before. Plus if you need to take the fiberglass off and reglass it that would be a problem. I know a lot of the soft top boards they sell a Costco are becoming popular here in Hawaii and are very reasonable price wise.

Once a board has become waterlogged, is it possible to reverse that?
@billstonebraker53046 жыл бұрын
Usually when a board has water in it the fiberglass separates from the foam. You can strip that portion of glass off let it sit in the sun or in a dry area and it may take a week or two to dry out then repair with new fiberglass the area you stripped.

Sand it really good with 60 grit then 100 grit so pigment will stick. It is a solid red opaque pigment. Add enough to the resin so it is not see through. I get mine from Fiberglass Hawaii fiberglasshawaii.com/resins/colorants/pigments/pigment.html

As you obviously know from over 60 years surfing, many boards come and go. Most go. I have to ask if this board was ridden by you in the 1970's. Just curious. Great job. I know this is much more difficult than making something new.
@billstonebraker53043 жыл бұрын
No I didn't ride this board. I made it for someone. My favorite boards were round pin tail single fin which was current in the 70's. The first twin fin in Hawaii was of my creation by accident when I fell on my board surfing Diamond Head and it broke in front of the fin box. The front half was 6 feet and I wondered what it would surf like if I put two fins on either side of the tail break. I called it the 'incredible bullet' and it really worked well.
