Good morning, complements for your videos, very nice and useful !!! I'm restoring an old kite surfboard, made of resin. At the moment I have carried out numerous repairs with epoxy, fiberglass and mocrosfers, as a result the surface is aesthetically very unpleasant. The original resin was transparent and graphics were integrated between layers. I made the same graphics with the PC, so I can print them by ink jet plotters. At the moment I purchased epoxy and fiberglass to re-laminate the whole board over the existing layers. I don't care about the weight, I wish it will be very strong. I also bought a colorant for resins, white. If you can, I need some advice to finish the work, to give the surf an aesthetic aspect similar to the original: To give a white background, so as to cancel all the remaining signs of repairs, which is better than the following procedures? Procedure 1) - First lamiantion using only one layer of fiberglass and white colored resin - Second lamination with the next layers of fiber glass and trasparent resin and interposing between the layers the printed graphics Procedure 2) - I spread the white resin with brush all over the surface to erase the signs of repairs - Lamination with all the fiberglass layers, interposing the printed graphics Also, do you think for the realization of graphics it is possible to use glossy lucid paper (the kind used for techinchal drawings and china) or if you must use rice paper? Thank you Andrew

Hello Fiberglass Fl.. I am located in Cocoa Beach and have an older surf sup I am trying to recondition to like new . This is an epoxy sup 9 ft the rails are soft and the fiber glass is showing worn out. I am starting to sand down and remove all pads and old wax and debris. What I need to know is can you provide supplies for me to complete this project? It's a 9ft x 28" sup. I wanted to add some carbon sheeting to the rails to strengthen them a bit. What are your thoughts on the best way to accomplish this..

A quick question: Can you keep your brush after using all the time in the acetone bucket, do you cover the acetone bucket when storing it? And is the second button also aceton? Great vid!
@thirdearthsurf
@thirdearthsurf Жыл бұрын
Yes you can. Although you cleaning acetone bucket eventually starts to become contaminated with resin and start to get sticky, that’s why you have a secondary clean bucket of acetone to clean off the brush that has been in the contaminated one. Keep in mind that the brushes will eventually be unusable but the trick is to keep everything as clean as possible to reduce waste. Waste is money. Hope that helps

Great video.. Can we lower its viscosity and apply the polyester resin by spraygun to make it super smooth?
@decadeca1000
@decadeca1000 3 жыл бұрын
You can thin with styrene and add wax solution...10% styrene and 3% wax by volume is Kokuas bullet proof formula on Swaylocks. Resin isn't meant to be sprayed, and you will be very happy with the sightlly thinned Reichold gloss. Even just Reichold by itself will lay very smooth. The resin acts as a "sheet" and pulls right across the board as it hangs off the edges.

how long do you let a glossed (PU) surfboard cure? is that time different than just a sanded hotcoat? I know it's more about the laminated fiberglass, but I'm still unsure, as the internet says 5-7 days, but doesn't really say how that does/doesn't change if you add a gloss coat.

I have a question, do you think it's possible to add some last minute spray paint/airbrush art before applying the final gloss coat? I've been told to do it after board's complete and apply a clear coat over the art but I figure if you do it before gloss coat then no need for clear coat. Thoughts?
@loganclayton1789
@loganclayton1789 5 жыл бұрын
Shawn, yes! This can be done, but keep in mind, as this gloss coat is very thin, maybe 2 mils or so, any ridges left from taping off for the airbrush work may show through. Just be very careful when you sand your gloss coat. A lot of times, especially w/ fabric inlays, the pinline is put on after the hotcoat is sanded.

@nolenvlogs2697
@nolenvlogs2697 4 жыл бұрын
If you must touch a freshly sanded board as I did, it’s important that I give a quick handsand job to the area that I touched before I gloss the bottom. Boards frequently get contaminated by humans or bugs. Sometimes you gotta re sand an area to make it “gloss ready” again. Thanks, Matt Holladay

@nolenvlogs2697
@nolenvlogs2697 5 жыл бұрын
AngeLo Quiroz I apologize, I would not advise ever working with epoxy. But if you do have a epoxy board, free of any pinholes, sanded to 100 grit, this gloss will adhere ok. Sometimes the gloss will chip off the epoxy after years. I would not recommend.

All polyester resin is about the same viscosity, if that is what you're asking. Gloss resin is just a different kind of polyester. Do not use styrene to thin the gloss coat. it isn't needed.
@briantrend1812
@briantrend1812 5 жыл бұрын
Logan Clayton that's good to know thankyou. I've made a dozen boards in my lifetime and I've never used styrene to thin the resins down although I have used wax in styrene to get rid of the tackiness of the gel coat(for sanding). My local supplier never had any high gloss resin so I just sanded the gel coat down and buffed and polished and its worked for me in the past. I'm making my 13th board which is my first long board and as im not worried about the weight issue on a long board I will use a gloss coat to finish after the gel coat is sanded down.
@loganclayton1789
@loganclayton1789 5 жыл бұрын
@@briantrend1812 You don't need to use styrene at all. After laminating, put a few CC's of wax agent in the hot coat for sanding. I'm assuming you are referring to the "gel coat" as the hot coat.
