We are in the process of removing this awful product put down two summers ago. The amount of product needed to create this incredibly ugly surface was seemingly endless. It was sharp to walk on, forget bare feet on your deck. After spending fortunes to NOT cover what it said it would, we looked and saw there was a class action suit over it and shlepped all cans back to Lowes who fought the return but offered a replacement product. WEEKS, not days involved in making my decent-looking deck look hideous, then almost back to the condition it was. DO NOT go this route.

This is a prime example of how not to clean the decks again your deck. You must clean each board at a time, from the beginning to the end, never stop in the middle or reverse your cleaning the other way or you will never get a good cleaning and the lines will show up right away wherever you stopped and started again. I did this for over 10 years and had hundreds of customers that called me every few years to clean again. If you keep up with the cleaning your deck can look beautiful every year, for years to come. They key is to clean it right and seal it every few years depending on how good the sealer was. Thompson's water seal had a life expectancy of approx. 6 months to a year, others up to 5 years if you wanted the best.

Once that thick sealant is on the wood, any water getting underneath has no way to escape and your deck is going to rot away much faster. Sometimes you see new coating on the outside studs of hundred years old open timbered houses in Germany. Instead of preserving the timber this kills it even quicker, as water will get into the studs eventually but can no longer get out. The proper way to treat those studs is limewash, which is permeable to vapor. On a deck where you walk on, stain would seem most appropriate. This video is just a commercial for what seems to be an inferior product based on a bad idea, nothing more. A shame that TOH plays along with this.

This produced a long list of questions... Use "stripper" on the entire deck... what kind of stripper? I was told the best way to clean a deck is a mixture of TSP and water, rinse and then hit it with one cup bleach to a gallon of water to kill mold. Stripper is acid... careful application and injury prevention was not emphasized. Other TOH videos have said not to use a pressure washer on wood. I have a cedar deck and if you hold the nozzle of a pressure washer 6" from the deck, it will pull up wood fiber. NO WAY would I go near raw wood with a pressure washer. The gop they are putting on the deck apparently is too thick for boards that are close, so they show cleaning the joint with a putty knife. This leaves a ridge of gop on the top of the decking... if you are not supposed to go back over the decking with the roller how do you get rid of the ridge of gop? Also by going over you could fill the joint back in... This should be titled "How to possibly destroy your wood deck"

We had an application of this type of product on our aging deck and were not happy. Yes it hides surface defects but it is incredibly abrasive. You have to be carful not to brush against railings or it will cut you. Forget about bare foot on this. End of the day it will look better than damaged wood from a distance but once standing on the deck it looks like a poorly frosted cake that feels like the coarsest grit sandpaper. At the very least limit this to the deck surface only - do not put on railings or posts people are going to touch.

Sand it, blow the dust off, rinse with water, let dry. Take 4 QTS water to 2 cups bleach, apply on a rinsed surface with a broom, brush, or mop. Let it sit for 15 minutes and rinse. Repeat as necessary. then comes the big expensive question. To stain or not. To seal or not. Sealing introduced silicon which is hell to prep for future work. As is latex. Oil it? Varnish? Or you could just leave it. Or seal it and commit yourself to a major task 1 to 3 years down the road.

Majority of homeowners will not do this much preparation. Lucky if the homeowner pressure washes the deck and than stain it a few days later. I’m hearing from everyone sand the wood etc...
