Here in Nova Scotia,we used to have spring and fall clean-up. People would put out old and broken lawnmowers ,snowblowers, chainsaws, etc. I would collect and repair what I could and give them to people who could not afford to buy new ones. He told me that he has 3 lawn mowers than dont work. I asked if he wanted to part with them. He said he really wanted his main one working but that I could have the other two. I’m hoping to use it in place of the newer push mower. Thank you for your great videos and cheerful dialogue which gives me a lot of encouragement! In 1971, I was working for JC Penny's and I sold a ton on these lawn mowers. Penn-craft was Penny's model of this same lawn mower. When you would point this out the two side by side, they were the same except for the price and color. Toro was over a $100.00 dollar difference and some times more. I would point this out to the customer and they would buy the JC Penny's Penn-craft model. Guess what, I did not make a dime on sales, but made my Boss look good. I then went inside the store and started selling Hardware, my boss had both depts. I liked that better in the Air and stayed cleaner. Great Job and as Always and I Learned something today.

Another minor victory for this amateur mechanic. I bought this mower at the Kessler BX in 1983. It is Jacobsen predecessor to this style mower. Used it to mow yards in Mississippi, Maryland, Kansas, and San Antonio. Several years ago it stopped working and would stall after starting. After a while I took it to a mower repair shop. They finally gave up claiming they could not find the carburetor diaphragm needed. Brought it home and took it apart and found Briggs and Stratton engine code on block. Googled a site with parts listing for the many hundreds of engines B&S made. Found and ordered the correct diaphragm. The carburetor sits on the diaphragm on top opening in gas tank. Uses compression pressures to move diaphragm and push gas from gas tank into carburetor. Reassembled, adjusted carburetor and it works! On KZbin I follow Mustie1 channel who repairs all types of oddball small engines. Learned enough to feel confident enough to dive into this repair.

Back in the early 80's, I did small enging repairs as a side line and there were a few rich neighborhoods near me so every week on trash day i would take a ride out there, and i would see push mowers, riding mowers and even some chainsaws thrown out to trash, most only needed miner repairs such as points and condenser, or a spark plug, i picked Snappers, John Deere, Wheel Horse, homelite and Stiel saws, after i gave them TLC i then sold them. Easy money, now it seems most items today are throw away!

Fixed a newer version of that Toro. Got $150. Needed a carb rebuild kit with the needle seat being shot and a couple other gaskets. Kit was $14.50. A new whole carburetor was $8.50. No brainer. When I see ya work on mowers it reminds me of myself in my younger days, I've done small engine and mower repair on and off for nearly 40 years

Good job. One of your most to the point videos and probably very helpful to a lot of people.

At the 24-minute mark you spray the starter motor clutch with some kind of a cleaner. What is the cleaner you are using?

I think he decided the oil was the problem so he used a degreaser to remove it. Maybe something like Brakleen

It it just me but with all the safety stuff on equipment today almost makes everything junk in a few years. There is not many people like Mustie out there today.

I've got the exact mower although mine is pull start, 18 years and 1 pull starts every time. Have replaced pull cable and drive gear and a few oil changes. Love it.
