How to restore a red telephone box

How we went about restoring a K6 British red telephone box, on a bit of a budget! Not perfect but perfect for us!

Greetings from Texas ... we have a 1935 K6 ... plan to do a restoration much like you did here ... many thanks re this video ... will be invaluable for sure. Re moving the phone box ... it looks like your delivery guy ran straps thru the dome somehow ... yes ? If so then I assume two of your "Telephone" sign windows were already gone and they ran the straps thru there and safely lifted the entire box in that fashion ?

Hi Thanks for your message, when it was first delivered although the telephone signs were broken the lorry had a big grabbing arm with pads on two linear bars which just clamped the top of the box and lifted away, then I had it moved and yes a rope/ strop went through the telephone sign openings.

Thank you for the info, roughly how long did it take in labour to strip down, sort the glazing and repaint please? We have one in our village that leaks in a few places, the glass is frosted and tarnished etc plus flaking paint, I'd like to restore it but just wanted a rough idea of how long it could take? Thanks

Sorry for the delay I have been away! anyway, stripping down was quite hard work but you have to draw a line in the sand when comes to how much you sand off before painting, I certainly didn't get to bare metal! there are companies who will sand blast it but could be expensive. I purchased the correct glass and GPO paint on-line and used glass mastic to seal them in.

Did you replace the bulb in the top? I have one with an anti tamper triangle head bolt holding the lens on and can't find a tool to do it.

Hi Matt, no I haven't done the bulb yet! its on the list! interesting about the bolt il have to look at mine.
