I know silver is frustrating, but making sure the material is touching at the seam helps a lot. Also, you might try a different torch so you can better control heat. I prefer natural gas but use propane/oxygen at work. Butane, in my experience, is messier and allows for much less control.

Oh absolutely, the closer the better. And investing in a propane/oxygen torch is definitely something I'm considering for the future :)
