Hi Anthony! I just stumbled across your channel and it's brought so much clarity regarding memory techniques. Practicing mindfulness and actively focusing on what I am learning/reading when said explicitly really drives the point home! Studying chemical engineering starting from no scientific background 5 years ago was extremely daunting but taught me a myriad of things about my own personal learning ability/style. Ditching the IQ equivocates to intelligence motto was fantastic for my mindset towards learning. I am excited to keep watching your videos and applying them to my own learning in musicianship, math/physics for my senior design classes, language learning and so much more! Keep being awesome, I'm sure you've influenced many others seeking to improve their learning. Kind regards, -Dylan

I think if you want to be able to remember things in a lot of detail on command basically, you need to practice the process of what is actually taking place when memorizing something. I think it largely comes down to imagination and association. Tony buzan obviously talks about this a lot as being the language of the brain. I personally think that ordering and structuring information is always extremely key. Like putting the puzzle pieces in the right spot leads to clarity of the picture both small and large details

Anthony, do you feel mind maps have a place in learning for someone at an advanced level using the memory palace? I'm far from that point, but I already feel that making mind maps don't really help at all and just make me waste time. As I create more vocabulary images, putting together mental imagery for whatever subject becomes quicker and easier, and I just don't see the ROI of making mind maps. But maybe I'm missing something? Anyone that relies on mind maps to learn could explain in which ways they can be better or complement the memory palace?

Advanced is remembering to always be a beginner. Mind map in a spirit of experimentation and some cool things will happen. There’s a case study in the FAQ section of the MMM Masterclass for combining mind maps with Memory Palaces that worked really well. It need more user data, though.

Great video Anthony! From today on ill be a devotee of your videos But Anthony i have a question, how many languages a person can learn within a year? I mean a language has more than 20 thousands words, how many words should i learn a day or can i learn a day because I'm really struggling with that, if i want to learn a new language should i know every words? I'll watch a few videos of yours today because this video helps me lots, I'm literally grateful for your videos, it's really sad to see that you've only got 90k subscribers

Thanks for your post and your question. I have a video addressing the amount of languages it's possible to learn: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qYXHioqAfrqDnMk As for how many words one needs to know, there's a lot of smoke and mirrors out there. One thing to do is record yourself during the day and count how many unique words you use. Unless you have highly specialized conversations in technical areas of interest, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised to find that most of us use between 800-1200 words, not 20,000. Does this way of looking at things make sense and help you out?

I suggest people only memorize info they want to use, making the reduction to one repetition only irrelevant. Generally, you can reduce long term info retention to very few reps. But there are so many different info types, that this shouldn’t be the goal.

So far, the MMM Masterclass has helped James Gerwing win the 2019 Canadian Memory Championship. Those standards are different, but not entirely different. It's worth a shot, but the express purpose of the MMM Masterclass is learning with long term retention, not competition. I was delighted to learn that it works both ways, however. Please let me know if you have further questions and I'll get back to you a.s.a.p.

I am in the MMM masterclass and also interested in competitive memory casually. I think even though it is not explicitly geared towards competitors even experienced and accomplished memory athletes would gain valuable insights from the content. Here are two insights I have gained that benefit me a lot but are overlooked by most of the competitive community. 1. Drawing memory palaces - why wouldn’t I want to reduce my cognitive load when practicing? Very few competitors see value in drawing palaces even though the value to me after viewing MMM is readily apparent 2. A-Z or otherwise organized memory palace networks. Many competitors have far too few MP locations and rely on favorites. They also forget past made palaces often because they mostly use their favorites and they never practiced or drew their less favorite locations. A-Z networks have 2 compelling use cases in competitive memory. If you rotate through them in order with discipline as a rule you will use them all equally instead of prefer favorites. The second is for long form you can chain them together. For a very long number you can use palaces A-B-C in order chained together. The MMM won’t be a standalone primer for competitive memory but a great supplement. I would recommend MMM plus some private lessons with Ronald Johnson who is an affordable competitive memory coach who has interviewed many of the top competitors. The top competitors also do coaching but it is expensive. I have done a lot of private coaching and MMM and have overall learned the most about mnemonics concepts from Anthony’s videos and comments.

@@AnthonyMetivierMMM I have worked with Tom's Park but I haven't integrated any mind palaces techniques there yet. I do think there might be some interesting combinations possible there with the mind palace technique but i'm not exactly sure how yet. In Tom's Park there are all sorts of buildings that have certain functions that you could use for your mind palace.There are also staff members scattered everywhere that are there to help you. Maybe after going through your mind palace you could start a conversation with one of the staff members and explain the information to them in the right order. The interesting thing is that the imaginary conversation you have in your mind with a staff member can at some moments in time become very spontaneous whereas it seems as if you're not steering the conversation anymore with your own intellect but that your intuition has taken over. The practice with staff members, insights, questions they might ask, might give new meaning to the information you're storing and working with. Maybe at one point you can even try and ask a staff member to retrieve information from one of the mind palaces, automating the process totally by means of intuition - I'm curious if that would be possible.
@AnthonyMetivierMMM
@AnthonyMetivierMMM 2 жыл бұрын
I like how you're thinking and I can see no reason why such things would not be possible. The core difference for me and my personal desire for such things would be to remove random conversations with imaginary beings and to remove the notion of "intuition." Rather, I would construct a "park" or imaginary world based more on the "Mastermind" concept where study and memorized knowledge would aid in "What would so-and-so say about situation x?" This is important to me personally because mathematically, any "intuition" would certainly be much improved by cross-referencing it with existing data, rather than just floating out of the void of some imaginary game... to the extent that there is any such thing as a void from which "unique" or "new" things could avoid. Thus, although my work and the imaginative processes I teach are not the polar opposite of Tom's Park, it is distinctly different. No need to pit one against the other, but insofar as time exists and "I" exist, my personal time and the teaching that emerges from it goes toward a different form of entanglement. But who knows? It might be more similar than my limited viewpoint is capable of recognizing.
