I usually observe the racket movement to read the spin, but sometimes I miscalculate them, explaining how it bounce and travels through the air really helps a lot!

i also have the same problem. heavy sidespin tomahawk especially long on the edge is a big weakness for me. if i cut. it flies. if i counter smash it. it mostly goes to net, if i counter loop it. it either goes long or sideways missing the table. not an easy serve to receive.

Watch for the bat angle and contact point during opponent's serve. Practice more and you will learn.
