I usually hit the ball too high when the serve has a lot of spin, and that leads the opponent into smashing the ball. Now I’m going to try something different.

If your serve assumption is too close to the baseline, then you are making too much of a movement. It's easier to put the ball short if you just hold it because then the ball is short and the opponent can't attack as well. The only attack that can come is a bad flick, which you can then attack again yourself.
