Even 6 year old ones are starting to disguise their servers and use the same movement for top, side and underspin. Just the moment of impact will differ, while the movement can stay the same, so the expansion her was really very good. I like how he add more options for the return at the end of video, but it felt quite a bit oversimplifying first. just to give options in the end. Still, you are right over all pretty good and straight forward explanation.
@d1st0rt3dsan1ty3 жыл бұрын
This is brilliant. Many newer players don't realize that sidespin has to be combined with another spin to be truly effective off the bounce. You can spin a basketball on your finger and it will go nowhere, yeah? The same reason why you need to put sidespin on an "axis" of sorts. Pay more attention to what kind of sidespin than the actual sidespin, and your life will be much easier.

Returning spin serves is really hard and tough job to do. You never know what direction your opponent spin serves. I think it is all about playing more with pro athletes. I lost most of my important games only because of not properly returning the spin serves and it caused me lots of trouble and confusion. Cheers for sharing the secrets. I asked most of the best players and even coaches on how to return spin serves properly and smoothly. They never shared it and always reluctant towards it. Now I have cleared all my confusion and start practicing tips you have just mentioned. I hope it works out. I appreciate that. Welldone!
@cedrikthibert70332 ай бұрын
What's harder is returning them well with offensive push, an offensive drive, a lift or a top spin. It is so important to prevent the 3 rd shot finisher.
@BeatsByRouph2 жыл бұрын
It’s basically just: return backspin with backspin. Return top spin with top spin return side spin with down spin or top spin
@cedrikthibert70332 ай бұрын
You need to return the serve on the table in a way the opponent cannot finish the point on the 3 rd shot which is exactly what a good player is trying to do. The goal of the serve is not exactly to win without a return even though it's great, it's actually to take the opponent off guard and return the ball in the center of the table or very high so the opponent can finish up with a top spin. The serve, the return and the third shot are extremely important in table tennis. More important than the spin.

Thank you Tom. I have started playing again, after a 30 year hiatus. Love playing the Chinese at Ping pong parlor in Cambridge. They are all so much fun and great rallies. Today, however, an English guy appeared today who was a bit annoying and full of himself. He had some very difficult serves and wanted to play games rather than rally and practice - which is fine. Anywho, your video has provided some great, clear and concise solution for when I meet Kevin again! 😂 Thanks again❤️🙏👍👌

Picking up a serve is truly a nightmare for most beginners and intermediate players. This video guides us to pick up many more serves, which effectively lifts the mental pressure off the game. As we start lifting the serves, it kind of gives a spike in confidence and allows our neuromuscular coordination to be at ease. Then we can play our game comfortably as now we have a chance to rally around a point. Unfortunately, if we lose a point straight while lifting a serve, we not only lose a point, but tend to have a diminished performance in the remaining game. So picking the service goes a long way in helping us perform better at the rest of the game. A lot of thanks to Tom for giving a detailed and precise description of lifting all kinds of serves.

I've been playing table tennis at the office for years, and I feel silly for not watching these videos sooner. That section on sidespin was eye opening for me. I learned through experience that sidespin with topspin could be returned with a drive, but my brain didn't put 2 and 2 together for sidespin with backspin.

I'm taking private lessons from a coach. You're right the side spin doesn't matter much, it's the back spin and top spin added to it that is important because when you hit the ball you should position yourself and the racket on the opposite side the ball is going and then you can set a target where you seek to return with either a push, a drive, a lift or a powerful top spin depending on how good and what type of service it is.

Hi Tom, useful tips. I think that your strengths & weaknesses of play also depends on your opponents play. I struggle with strong "blocker" who is also good and returning using wide angles. My strength is forehand and backhand topspin returns but would like to get more spin on these returns so I'm not relying on speed and position. I can get points from my serve variation too. Hope this comment is useful. Martin

Thank you for the video. It’s obviously helped a lot of people. One thing I don’t understand though is how to know what kind of serve is coming toward you. I guess experienced players will recognize the server’s movement, but I’ve watched this video a bunch of times, and the backspin serve and topspin serve still look the same to me (when they’re being served). And side spin looks the same too! The only way I can tell the difference is by what happens after the return, and by then it’s too late. What am I missing?
