In this video we will show you some of the steps required to reupholster a back-to-back lounge recliner seat. This type of seat is used as the helm seat in Brian’s 1982 Regal 245 XL Ambassador. Sailrite’s project boat for 2016. As often is the case the wooden base and the backer boards of the old seat are rotted and in need of replacing. Brian will remove the seat from the boat, remove the old vinyl and use the old rotted wood as a template to make a wooden base and backer boards. He will then assemble the new base and prep the backer boards for re-upholstery. We will not be showing Brian doing that, but rather will highlight the reupholstering of the base and the seats using supplies from Sailrite.

That's a good tip about ensuring your foam is larger than your covering. I made that mistake on a piece of high density foam. I measured the old piece of compressed foam and cut my new piece. As you might imagine, the new piece I sewed to cover it with was very baggy. I ended up wrapping that with 1/2" foam to pad it out appropriately. I would have just gotten a new piece, but 2" foam is pricey!

I would not use a permanent marker to mark with because it bleeds through the vinyl

Regarding seat base; can 1/2 inch polyester batting be used as an alternative to the 1/4 inch sew foam with fabric backing? (I have several rolls of the 1/2 inch batting ) Also, what is the name of the video on inside corners with a heat gun? Thanks for your videos!

For the silk film would you just wrap that inside between the foam and vinyl? Or sew it on with the paterns?
@SailriteDIY
@SailriteDIY 6 жыл бұрын
Just wrap the silk film around the foam. Do not sew it on the patterns.

Great video Lots of info as always Thanks. One hint or suggestion. When she made the side foam cusions and inner foam .Should she have made all of them both left and right sides at the same time? Especially when she cut the foam to size..That would ensure a semetrical height to them? Or maybe I missed that ? Anyways I really enjoy these videos. Thanks.

You are correct they should be made at the same time.

Love how the narrator is second guessing a bunch of the things she is doing and keeps rubbing it in ... 5 steps later .. "would have been better if the foam was smaller" lol ... great content though and i think Cindy does an awesome job!!!

Wow. Cindy did awesome. I wish I had her contact so I could ask if she could do my boat seats. That Sailrite narrator though, he sounds like a he's better than Cindy or something. So much negativity. Makes me not want to buy from them just because.

I think it's sad how the speaker is downing her methods and techniques on how she does things. let the lady do her job and you do yours! I originally started watching this video on how to learn to reupholster my boat seats but I couldn't help being distracted by the speakers negativity. good way to promote your business, have fun with that 👌👌

Completely agree. She was doing great and he put her down at every turn... I get the alternative ways to do something but the comments were really annoying. She clearly knows what she is doing. Why don't you have the mouthpiece narrator do her job for her and then he'll be happy with the work. If I was her, I'd hate working for your company. Wow.

Parker Hammond I got to tell you I didn’t get that vibe. I think the narrator was just suggesting alternatives for someone that might not want to use the gimp for example.

Just want you all to know that the narrator was actually collaborating and directing Cindy (the seamstress) in this video to do each task. So, any mistakes were actually not the sewers but rather the narrator who directs all the Sailrite videos. So... it may look like I am being hard on Cindy, but it is actually me that made the mistakes.

Being completely honest, I actually watched your entire video. Cindy did a great job on the vinyl. Your video was so straightforward that it motivated me to find a cheap walking foot and make my own seats for my 70' Cobia bowrider. The Narrator was actually very and well spoken. However he slipped in some hilarious unscripted commentary regarding Cindy's work. Nothing came across as rude or disrespectful. It sounded like a business owner looking out for his product and having high expectations for his employees. Either way, the video is BY FAR the best of its kind that I have found online.

LMAO well said .. i was thinking the the same thing but your choice of words are perfect.. Funny aside, Sailrite has a TON of great videos very well made and full on information so un "non-experts" could actually do this ourselves saving a ton of money. I wish i could afford one of their sewing machines.. Mr narrator if you want to send me a sewing machine, i promise ill video record my interior build and send it to you royalty free no copyright worries !!! :)

Surprised that the seat is so poorly designed that it rubs on the base when extended, instead of being on a metal track.
