My mom canned fruit, jams, jellies etc. she used her old lids all the time. She boiled them after she cleaned them and then she used them on her jellies and jams. She NEVER canned veggies or meat because she only had a water canner. She never lost one of her jar. She also used parafin on her jellies. I can still remember prying those wax seals off. After you used them for your jellies, you melted them down for candles.

Do you know how to use paraffin to seal up jams, etc? I used it with a friend over 40 years ago and don’t remember. Please and thank you.
@jeanmartin6410
@jeanmartin6410 3 жыл бұрын
@@carolstrickland6979 it’s very simple. To be safe, you heat the wax over a double boiler until it liquifies, then you pour it over your jelly/jam in the jar. Mom always made it about 1/4 inch thick. Make sure you cover ALL the jam get the wax right up the sides of the jar. This makes an air tight seal. It’s a little fragile, and it’s NOT meant for meats/ veggies or anything of that sort, but if you don’t have lids, it’s a good way to keep jams and jellies preserved. The worst that may happen is a little mold on the top. Mom always just scraped it off and we are the jam anyways. Her seals didn’t fail very often. Good luck. Remember to get the wax up the sides and you should be fine.

I'm new to pressure canning, in Scotland, where this is not a widely known way of preserving food at all. The only one UK based place to order pressure canner has French canning jars, Le Parfait. So far I reused the same lids 3 times and every single one of them worked out perfectly. Forts I had to work out how to take the lids of without destroying them 😂😂😂 and I was able to reuse the lids over and over again. Can't wait to see how many tikes I can use the same lid for. One lid is about 80pence, so pressure canning would be a very expensive way to preserve food. The veg would be way cheaper that goes into the jars then the one use lids. 😳 I though it is still amazing to preserve meat and meat based ready meals, as quality pasture raised organic meat is very expensive. We raise some of our meat, but not enough for the whole year. Seeing that I can reuse the lids safely for 3 times at least, the lids are already 3rd cheaper per use. So I will definitely can our vegetables too. 🤗🤗🤗 Can't believe pressure canning is not widely known. I will surely tell as many local folks as possible. Today Grandpa tried our amazing canned mutton and bean soup. My husband and son are over the moon with the delicious "fast food". Thanks to all the lovely American homesteading people who shares their knowledge. 🤗🤗🤗

One tip to reusing lids: when you are using them for the first time, ensure the lid is properly centered on the lip of the jar. In this way he next time you use it, the sealing compound is evenly distributed on both the inside and outside of the lip. WARNING! Shocking information: Yes, I reuse lids. I've had one failure in 15 years. I also don't soak my beans before canning, don't blanche all my vegetables, and don't put sugar in my applesauce. (I guess you could call me a rebel...) 🤣

Great video💗 2 tips I'd like to share..I use the cheap dollar store hand sanitizer to remove the permanent marker ink on the lids. Also, if you are having issues with the food saver jar sealers sealing...take and drill a hole from the underside to both a reg and wide mouth lid. Put the one with the hole on top of an undrilled lid and vacuum seal. It will seal easier, the vacuum sealer top will come off easier, and using the drilled lid will release from the now sealed lid.

I am SHOCKED by the price-gouging of canning lids!! A DOLLAR EACH or more?! I started canning in earnest during the "living off grid" craze about ten years ago & I have a box of 12 LIDS + BANDS from April 2013 that cost $3.19, and I remember thinking back then that the price had doubled since the last time I canned (in the 90's when 'thrifting' became cool). We need American factories SO BAD!! I am hearing nothing but terrible things about the performance of these crappy unacceptable lids.

The simple fact is that during cooling, the jar will create vacuum and pulling the lid down, creating a perfect vacuum seal. All you need for the jar to maintain that vacuum seal is a semi soft material, like the seal on your lid. If your lid is deflective, your lid will never pop down, it ill stay up and you can check it by pushing the center of the lid down. If it is the case, replace the lid and reboil you jar. I have reuse my lids many times, with never one seal failing to vacuum, and as long as there is no visible damage on the lid, you are good to go.

I’m new and have only vacuum sealed a number of items as, I haven’t done any canning yet. But, I just couldn’t get in with the constant lid replacement, particularly with this entire “Is there or is there not an aluminum shortage” thing going on. Even if there wasn’t any shortage at all, I’m not going to be placing order after order or continually running to the store. So, I bought a Pry-a-Lid opener. So far, for vacuum sealed lids, it works great and I don’t have to worry about damaging a lid, just because I need to open it to get out only some of the contents. Just not interested in getting on a lid treadmill.

We get asked this many times and Patrick starting looking into it months ago. The problem is sourcing the parts for that size that would keep the price of the chamber affordable. It is surprising how much parts go up in price just going to 6" and then 8". I have seen the 6" lids selling for as much as what we charge for the finished 4" chamber with shipping included. Not sure if the full gallon jars would fit in the 8" diameter but that size is even more outrageous

@@RainCountryHomestead I suppose. Why wouldn't those be outrageously expensive like everything else, right? I thought I'd ask. I'm sure I'm not the only one that reuses those big old pickle jars! I picture a big box, coated with something, big enough to stand the biggest jars in w/ the hose valve on it... big tight latches on the side that opens, & when you close it... that door would have some kind of a squishy gasket around the opening.. It would take 2 people to latch & unlatch it because it would be sooooo tight to make a good seal... THERE! Feel free to pass that idea on to Patrick. He'll probably ask you who sent it to you and you can also feel free to tell him the idea was offered up anonymously. 😆 Meanwhile, I'll just keep driving truck & searching for cool stuff for your husband to build for people like me!!😉 Take care - be safe over the Memorial Day wknd.

Has anyone tried using the scam China lids? Are they dangerous or just no good? I got some too😖 We can always use them for crafts that you can find on Pinterest.

You can make ornaments out of them. But, there is no way I'd can with them. You can just tell they will not hold up. I read someone used them and they buckled in the canner. YIKES!!

I would not use them, I read someone's horror stories on those and would not trust them at all

Since China poisoned pet food & used lead paint on children's toys, I would not trust them to not use harmful materials. Besides they did already lie about them being Ball lids.
