Hey Sam, you could use that piston retraction tool to prevent the piston from popping out when doing this method. The motor will stop if it feels pressure, thus saving you a headache of reinstalling the piston back in.

If you take the electric motor off the caliper (2 bolts I believe), you can wind the auger down with an Allen wrench; no battery required.

I used this method this morning and it worked perfectly. Just some advice, when the motor is winding tighter you can see it move tighter. When it’s winding backwards you can’t. Or I couldn’t anyway. It’ll pop when it’s fully out. Thanks for the help.

Just a note of warning!!! The cars control unit for these wind motors monitors load (in Amps DC) being pulled when motor runs. When amps climbing sharply (motor pushing hard against pad/disc), it stops the motor. WHEN you simply apply a DC voltage from a battery and wait for it to bottom out in either direction, be quick to react, as the motor / gearing can easily damage itself! A fuse in the line wire from the temp battery is also a good idea (in case of shorts or accidents).

9V battery works also. In my experience on VW CC 2011, the battery option is the best, as it works regardless of how seized the actuator mounting bolts are or how strangely "Intermittently faulty" scan tool app wants to be. (Carista, I am pointing at you.)You will always get the connector off, even with sand in it, like in my case. Use good pick tool, carefully. It helps, regardless of potential damage you may cause. Just research your style of connector first.

It's pretty important to note, if the handbrake is off then leave the calliper retracted. I would say its easier to leave the handbrake on. My car threw a wobbly. Started to panic we was going to need a scanner as we couldn't release the handbrake. Had to remove the wheels again wind it off and reply, after putting the handbrake on

Using a battery without fuse, make sure that you immediately remove the wires from the epb motor to prevent damage due to high current. L when the motor stops it actually trying to pull more current to continue spinning. If your power source can provide 100A, the motor would try to load 100A and potentially damage it if the wires were not removed immediately after hearing it stopped.
@howado

There are wires between your potential source and the EPB motor. If you’re using salami thick wires to unwind piston, you’re doing something wrong, perhaps 🤣

I have some follow up questions for this if someone could please help out with. When you start the job what do you do with the electronic parking brake, assuming that you make sure it is off? You state after you put new rotor and pads on to apply voltage to the parking brake to set the brake firm on the rotor, this kind of goes to my first question was the parking set on to begin with? If you snug the parking brake to rotors do you need to turn off in car after brake job is done?

Hello I recently got my discs and pads changed on my Audi a5 now the breaks are sticking - they were not sticking before!! When I took the car back to the garage they took everything apart and fitted the discs and pads again & they are still sticking !! Now they are saying it’s the rear right calliper that is causing the problem!! But I never had this issue before it went into the garage & I said how did you not know that the calliper was like that doing the breaks twice !! They said it’s working fine all the tests were fine!! But there going to charge me £280 for a new calliper and I have the strangest feeling the breaks are still going to stick !! Any ideas what’s going on if the breaks stick when they put a new calliper on ?
