Here is an easy way to see how counter steering works. Okay, ready? Sit in a swivel chair in front of your desk or table, now with your right hand pull on the table, you will see that your chair will swivel left. Now pull with your left hand, you will swivel to the right. The reason this happens is because of our muscle structure tension is retracting in on the side we are pulling with. Now if you push on the table with left hand you will turn left in the chair. Push right against table and chair will go right.

***** It's not an explanation of how counter-steering works, it's a way to understand the movement, that is, pulling right, causes you to go left and vice versa. I actually really liked the demonstration on the chair!

***** It also has to do with the forces applied from the rider and speed to assist the gyroscopic lean angle of the front wheel along with forces of gravity which pull the bike down and the forces of inertia that want to keep the bike up right. If you can explain it better, please share your knowledge. Now the chair explains push right go right, push left go left because you change the axis of the front wheel which in effect would be the chair.

You have to be careful when you say pull the right side of the handlebar to go left. I got confused because it doesn't make sense if you are pulling the handle straight at your midsection. You would effectively be turning the front tire to the right causing the bike to go right (at a slow enough speed). What you mean is pull the right handle up so that the bike now leans to the left causing you to go left. Which is more complicated than saying push the left handlebar down to go left.

Holy shit! I've been riding for 3 years and never 'connected' to countersteering until after watching this video. It's impossible to explain the mental difference to doing the exact same physical action. After all this time feeling somewhat 'awkward' in high(er) speed turns, I now understand how to lean into a turn and get lower than I have since I bought the bike without feeling like I'm going to lose control. Thanks M13! Hell, you may have saved my life!

You explain this so well. To explain how it works a little bit: When you go slow(15 or less), you push the handlebar in the direction you want to go. When you go faster, your handlebar stays straight, but your bike falls over in the direction you want to go. Your speed keeps you from falling down. Remember folks, always look through a corner it makes turning easy.

First of all, thank you for the helpful beginners' videos. For the last year and a half, I have ridden mountain bikes through moderate hills and was never introduced to the idea of counter steering since natural instincts took over. In hind sight, when following rightward curves during my fast single track rides, my body weight is shifted to the right side of the bike while I place incredible tension backwards on the left hand by pulling. This allows me to accurately control the amount of inward angle on the right side, thus allowing the bike to turn right. The human body naturally counteracts various bodily movements similar to counter steering. For example, when the right leg is lifted, my body shifts its weight to the left side while my right leg may move even further to the right to create proper equilibrium. Therefore, when a bike is leaning to the right during its turn, the weight of the bike is automatically shifted to the right, thus requiring some force to counteract against the inward movement of the bike to keep the bike from toppling over (the leftward G-force created due to speed or residual movement -- forward momentum -- when coming into the curve also adds to the counter force along with the left hand). The right hand is barely pulling on the handle bar since the weight of the bike is already forcing the inward angle on the right side to decrease. Shifting body weight inward with the turn also helps to counteract the residual G-force. So, theoretically, the left hand is merely ensuring proper bike control during the curve/turn since I am pulling as well as pushing. All of these 4/5 factors (if you consider slight pull of the right hand) are equally important to ensure great control during turns. 1 - left hand, 2 - g-force, 3 - right hand, 4 - body weight, 5 - bike's weight. I hope this helps. -thang d.

I was riding for two years until I first heard of counter-steering / how steering works on a bike. I was quite amazed at what happened when I pulled on the right or left side of my handlebars. But actually doing it while riding was natural from the very beginning. I mean, I've been riding bicycles ever since and I've been able to steer them as well so...

It worked! I got up to 100km/h and then turned HARD to the right, and my body went flying through the air to the left. Until I hit the pavement, it was a great learning experience! Kidding, of course. I already knew about counter-steering before my first ride because I watched your videos before buying a motorcycle. It made controlling the bike feel so natural... Thanks for the inspiration to buy a bike. :)

Counter steering. A counter steer initiates a lean to start the turn from an upright position. You can also turn without counter steer if you initiate a lean as you turn in, but this takes practice. MotoGP racers do not use counter steer at race speeds because of the high speed and the weight shift they use to initiate turns by leaning the bike. Same thing on a bicycle. If you dive into a high speed turn by leaning the bike hard as you turn in the direction you want to go it's like you're on rails. If you are simply upright and turn where you want to go you will go in the opposite direction!

To anyone wondering why this works here is a brief summary as far as I can understand: The wheels in the bike basically act as gyroscopes (google if you want) which by the laws of physics always want to keep the bike perfectly upright as long as they are spinning fast enough to do so (which is why this works at higher speeds) Turning the handle bars one way will essentially render the bike off balance in the other direction This will cause you to automatically lean into the turn the opposite way

Hey, I think where people get confused with counter-steering is that it's not the same kind of motion as just regular steering. With basic steering, you pull your elbow towards your body, pulling the steering wheel to direct the vehicle. With counter steering, you pull up on the steering wheel, This leans the bike to one side to "grab more ground" so you go in that direction.

Yea, I had to learn counter-steering as part of the compulsory riding lessons for getting a motorcycle licence here where I'm from. Building a proper counter-steering reflex is very important to help avoid obstacles. I actually recently escaped a car door opening in my face when riding a bicycle thanks to counter-steering. It works as long as you're going fast enough.

@kamikarmy 11 жыл бұрын
Another way to look at it.. The counter-steering will initiate the leaning of the bike. Several physical factors (centrifugal, gyroscopic, etc) will then make the motorcycle leans, turns and stabilize. But to lean the bike at speed higher than 30 km, you need to widen the wheel angle on the side of where the weight shift needs to go, as if you wanted to make the bike fall. And of course, you do that by initially turning the wheel in the other direction, *lightly*.

Basically if a bike had flat tyres and didn't lean, countersteering wouldn't work. In simple terms you're forcing the weight of the bike to the right when you turn left (because it wants to resist your input) so your bike leans to the right and then it's down to tyre circumference (smaller circumference on the outside of the contact patch while you're leaned over) so therefore the outside of the tyre travels less distance per revolution, so you turn. M13 is entirely correct.

Cheapest way to practice is to go into a parking lot with a bicycle, move as fast as you can and try counter steering. Start with very light leans. Practice more by going faster and leaning harder. Something people don't realize is, Counter steering is way more natural than we realize.

phisics of it: its not really the countersteering that turns the bike but only the leaning of the bike. by leaning you are using a diffrent surface and create a "ark" that translate into a turn. you could just lean the bike but then you need to use your whole weight what the counter steering adds is it uses the gravity to lean the bike and uses the centerfuge force to keep it from falling further . simple enough ? ok im officially a geek :P

I hear that. And it seems to make sense. But I personally doubt it. Because if I were to take a long right curve....I'd be pushing foward on the right handle bar for the whole curve (gently). Also you can see in the video that I'm only pulling on the right to go left.....and once I'm actually turning left....I've still only got one hand on in the pull position. So my educated guess is that for the whole turn you are applying some pressure in the "opposite" direction.

In Europe getting a license involves multiple tests. I passed my slow speed maneuvers test (closed circuit) and now I had to take an open road driving test, so I went to my first class, first time on a big bike,a limited 650, not 5 mins after leaving the building driving around an industrial area at low speed, the guy has me make a couple of turns and suddenly I'm on a highway, that's when I realized that I didn't know how to turn at high speeds and that I had never gone more than 20km/h before.

You steer the spot below you, where your tires meet the road. You steer that spot a lot like you steer a car. When that spot is directly under you you will go straight. When you steer that spot over to the side a little you will immediately begin to fall over and turn the other way. You will then naturally steer it back under you - or a well made bike will do that for you. Now you will be turning, the spot under you is out to your outside a little, holding you up and turning. Steer the spot.

yup, which is a point many people don't realize - motorcycle tires allow you to turn due to their bowl shape. This is why the steering feels heavy and sluggish when the front tire is flat.

Its all about how you're shifting your centre of gravity verses the bike. By counter steering, you're forcing your bikes cofg to the side of you, causing your weight to remain where it was due to the inertia of your body resisting the movement. Tldr for example, by forcing your bike to shift its weight to the right, you are in essence moving your body's weight to the left. Causing the bike to lean and turn. You can achieve the same thing by shifting your weight on top of the bike and achieve the same thing. So by counter steering, you could call it lazy, but in reality its a far more effective and responsive way of shifting your weight relative to the bike, because the bike is a rigid structure made for shifting weight effectively. The only issue is you need to account for your bikes displacement when you do this. Say for example, you take a corner wide and use counter steering, it could mean that based on the current position of your body, the bike will move closer to the outside of the corner and potentially hit the curb.

It is basically inertia that causes counter-steering. Inertia being resistance of a body of mass to change it's direction. If you turn hard in a car to the right your body feels like it is being pushed to the left, but this is because your bodies mass is resisting that turn to the right (or change in direction) When you are on a bike and turn hard to the right your body's inertia causes you to go to the left. The pivot point being at the wheels causes you to lean over

Your mostly right....but as I've said again and again and again and again. You can not take the corner by leaning off your bike. Leaning off a bike will maybe change lanes....slowly. It's not going to make the bike turn. ONLY countersteering can do that.

It's all about lean angle. If you want to go around a right corner, you need to lean to the right. Now to do that you could lean off your bike to create the lean angle and go around the corner. If you want to create the lean angle faster you'd need to bring down your bike faster. how do you do that? pull on the opposite directed handlebar. Your kinetic energy is still pointed straight as you pull the handlebar but your bike starts moving to the left (left handlebar) So you start leaning right.

It's a little bit different with something like a cruiser with big wide bars. They give you enough leverage to fight the bike and force it to "steer" like a car at a little higher speed. You still end up needing to counter steer, but I've seen a lot of cruiser guys crash when they go faster because they can't force it to steer anymore. Ultimately it's like you say and people don't realize what they're actually doing compared to what they think they're doing.

Slow feet-on-footpads riding is the only time you don't countersteer, but that's like at 5-15km/h like when you were maneuvering in a tight area, making a U-turn in the end of dead-end , stuff like that. There are books that describe in a very technical way how to safely go around corners but unless you have an unforgiving 1000cc sports bike, you can evolve your riding skills relatively safely. wear your gear if you are a newbie, stay safe, and be smart.

Keith Code on Twist of the Wrist video also showed this with a bike that has a second fixed handlebar. Leaning makes almost no change to the direction of the bike. Leaning comes after the bike drops to balance when the centre of gravity shifts. But even in that video, it was not as clear as you showed here M13.

If it helps anyone, the boring physics in a nutshell is that since your tire is round, you'll FALL INTO a side and use the lean angle to pivot instead of your front wheel. Turning the tire right makes the bike call on it's left side and same goes for the other way around.

Well, at low speeds, you are constantly balancing the bike with subtle corrections at the handlebars. You don't notice countersteering because very little is needed to initiate the weight transfer to the left or right. But like you said in the video: it is physically impossible to change directions on a 2 wheeled vehicle without countersteering. You can try it out on your 7 geared bycicle. just pull at the right side of the handlebar and de bike will fall to the left. Even under 5 mph/ km/h

Leaning isn't necessary for counter-steering. Leaning only benefits when counter-steering has reached its limit in a turn. Motorcycle racers are a good example of when leaning become beneficial to a turn. When counter-steering is fully exerted, leaning helps to 'sharpen' turns by changing the centre of force exerted into the ground, resulting in keeping the bike upright at extreme angles. Do you know what I mean?

Here's another example sortof -- Pretend you are turning to the right lane in a car. Put your hands up and do the motion. What did you do? Many will turn the wheel to the right then straighten it. That isn't what you do when you are driving! You turn to the right, then you turn again back to the left. Don't believe me, try it next time you are on the road. What we do subconsciously is really quite amazing.

Depends on weight, speed, and fork rake. I saw vids of Keith Code's "No BS Bike" with fixed handlebars and tried it by leaning w/o hands on the handlebars. On an older Ninja 250 you can corner, change lanes, etc by leaning without countersteering, especially at lower speeds. On a 650r you can't but the 650 is over 100 pounds heavier. That said, when leaning without countersteering, the *bike* is still countersteering, just your hands aren't doing it.

MrSlowestD16, you do turn in the direction you steer, but you cannot keep your weight in the same position as when going in a straight line. Even at low speeds there is something called inertia. The weight of you and your bike want to continue going forward, while you try to turn. To prevent falling over to the right when turning left, you need to lean. To get you and the bike in the right position you have to countersteer. Not seeing something doesn't necessarily mean it is not there.

I think the reason so many people are sceptical of counter steering is because most people don't understand that they are doing it or they don't understand your description. I'de say that after 15mph you use the handlebars on the Y axis (up and down) nd you dont use the X axis motion as much

There is no countersteering that goes on at parking lot speeds. The bike paths the exact direction you move the forks. "Counter" steering is to steer against something, in the case of the definition you're steering against the intended direction...but at slow speeds you're not countering anything - you're turning in the direction you intend to go. . "some kind of countersteer" - there's one kind...COUNTERING the steer direction.

Even at low speed to turn right you need to lean it a bit to right, because of centrifugal force. Problem is that every lean must be initiated with countersteering, at low speed it's almost imperceptible. You can also initaiate lean with leaning your body right, but it's much slower than using your handlebars . Try this in low speed and you will really see that it works like this. This is academically proved, like you start to walk, you first need to lean forward.

I dont know if this helps, but as a new rider this is how I look at it. Makes it easier for you brain to process IMO. If you want to go left push with your left. IF you want to go right push with your right. Initially when i first saw this I was like man I didnt remember riding a bike being so hard. When you get going on the motorcycle its like he said, its really quite natural after your first turn or two. But the whole pull right go left thing threw me for a loop. hopefully that helps someone.

Alright, the reason to why counter steering is true, is because of momentum. "An object in motion, stays in motion." Newton's first law. When you turn the steering to the right at speeds, the front wheel move to the right, and try to drag everything else, including the rider, to the right. But the rest of the bike and the rider wants to go straight ahead (this is momentum). This make the bike lean to the left, at which point the front wheel will correct itself, and the whole bike will turn left.

People keep saying that, but it's wrong. You can do the exact same thing on a bicycle while going slightly over walking pace. As soon as the training wheels come off your bicycle, you counter steer. And before you keep arguing with me, get your bicycle and try it for yourself.

Bikes turn by banking. Turning the handlebars to the right, turns the front wheel to the right, the forward momentum will not let the bike turn to the right without the bike falling over to the left, once the bike begins to lean left, it will go left, despite the handlebars turned to the right. simples.
@coast2coast00

a simple way to explain why this happens is because you steer at high speeds(like 20) by leaning the bike to the side, stearing the opposite way will tip the bike over into the lean. I don't know why no one explains it this way... maybe talking to beginners you assume they should already know this?(clearly some don't)

Countersteering is the technique used by single-track vehicle operators, such as cyclists and motorcyclists, to initiate a turn toward a given direction by momentarily steering counter to the desired direction. I won't compare bikes and cars since it makes no sense. I recommend reading some physics and trying what I told you. have a nice one.

Wish I would have know this first time I tried to ride. First turn I started leaning the wrong way and almost went over the side. I was listening to my dads advice on how to steer... Surprisingly the next two turns before I put the bike away I turned fine without realizing what I actually did.

you are not physically " going to the left" but "lagging" behind the turn. It's like when you slam on the breaks of a bike. The bike is slowing down but you feel like you are being pushed into the front. That is your inertia resisting that slowing down, so your bodies inertia wants to continue in the same direction at the same speed. When you turn right, the inertia of your body wants to continue going straight, so you "lag" behind the bike causing you to lean over.

Once you start riding, it is so ridiculously natural. You would have to think about it really hard to NOT countersteer.

nice, In sweden we learn counter steering at the traffic school (during late bike exercise/close to final test). or well at least at my school they teaches it. and i think it's something you should try to do even if you never done it before "consciously" no matter what people says, you are at some % of your turning techniques (at higher speeds) using counter steering, else you would barley turn at all. you can try this by Fix your handle bar and just lean, (don't do it in a corner...)

Riding bikes for a decades, I did not know I was counter steering till I saw one of your videos a few years back. Curious, I went out on the road and started playing with it (the bike) like you did. I did notice that if I had both hands on the bars I could tell when regular steering at very slow speeds would be taking over buy counter steering. It's not an off/on switch, but a gradual thing. The faster I went the less I could turn the bars. Then I reached the threshold and it was all C/S

I think it has alot to do with leaning, m13. Yank with the right hand, bike goes to the left, but you also lean the bike left. ( which is countersteering ). But if you yank with the right hand and lean right you will go right at any speed ( which feels unnatural I must admit ). I Couldn't have tried it on a motorcycle but i've tried it with a bicycle going downhill at around 30 and it was what I observed.

you cant turn without counter steering on any two wheeled bike or sorts because the lean counter acts the centrifugal force from the turn even at slow speeds below 15mph the counters steer is just so minute that you do not notice it.

I never driven a motorcycle before but I used to ride a lot of bicycle as a kid and I don't remember counter steering. I know is true but like you said some people do it with out knowing and I used to reach like 40mph and more take turns with my knee nearly touching the ground but I can't remember doing it. Any ways thanks your videos are very helpful since I'm planing on getting a bike for the first time soon.

The reason people dont think it works is because about 50% of people on here probably dont have a motorcycle, and they have tried it on a bycicle and found it didnt work, i also thought this, but you have to be going pretty fast for it to work, i think its something like 15mph or 20mph+ for it to come into effect.

My subconscious is not reliable, it tries to lean around obstacles. I also tried this because of your video, and it is useful to know what I can do to avoid an unexpected obstacle.

Easy way to understand it. If you are in a car, go fast and turn to the right. Which way do you feel yourself leaning in the car? You are pushed outwards to the left. Same thing happens to a bike, only it has two wheels and nothing to support it so it falls to the left. Then it will turn left.

In case anyone cares, if you turn going at speeds where kinetc friction cannot overpower centrifugal acceleration- your as will be whipped out. Counter-steering offsets the centrifugal acceleration by changing the point of the arc creating dual arcs, original is along the turn and the new arc is along the counter turned wheel and so, the torque produced by having the wheel turned keeps a stronger normal force, keeps your ass on ground, because its opposite to the what you turn, like a gyrophere

You are turning with the lean, with your whole body, the wheel turning the opposite direction is only a correction the the lean you are in, the fast you go, the more counter steer you do according to your lean.

basically to make the bike lean left, push on the left bar, if you want the bike to lean right, push on the right bar mate :) that is countersteering

Try it, you will naturally counter steer just by leaning but you must know that you always need to look at the target in which you are willing to go to, for instance a turn, don't look behind you or in front, look at where you want to end up and then it all happens naturally riding motorbikes is simple.

The MSF course teaches to press the handlebars in the direction you want to turn. They say that's safer somehow but I don't remember why.

Um, yeah....you're one of the guys I'm talking about in the video. I could hang my whole body off to the right of the bike.....and then turn the handlebars to the right....and the bike will STILL go left. I could attach a 200 pound weight to the right side of my bike....and once I get above 15km/hr.....if I turn right...I'm going left.
@M13

Leaning your body only moves the bike a very small amount. Perhaps enough to change lanes.....slowly. Not enough for even a moderate curve in the road let alone an actual turn.

lol - I go through too many bikes - but that's not the point. The only reason I ask is because comments like that make it look like you've never even touched a bike. . As people pointed out to you already, you don't counter-steer at slow speeds. You turn in the direction you steer, end of story. Weight balancing isn't counter-steering. Turning the forks left to go right (and vice versa) is, you do not need that at low speeds. If you did you could turn left with the forks at full lock right.
