"I just picked up my first motorcycle a little over a week ago and was un-able to have it delivered to my house for a few days and after the amount of money i was spending i dident want to wait. So i decided to Ride it home from the dealership. I have been watching your videos for a while and remembered you did one on How to ride a bike for the first time. So whilst at the dealership i jumped on my phone and watched the video again. I also watched your video on counter steering. So i rode my bike up from the dealership and made it safely. "

I've been riding for 26 years. All these things are so automatic for me now that I forget what it was like at first. When I was teaching my son to ride his first motorcycle I found the original version of this video and had him watch it. Now, I'm teaching a friend and I really glad to see that you've updated the video. Thanks! Ride safe!

If you're in first and you panic for whatever reason and hit the kill switch while moving forward, does the back wheel lock up if you don't pull the clutch in?
@joseantonioparedes7241

No, the wheels don't lock up. :-)
@thehooligan2689

If you don't pull the clutch in, and it is indeed in first (or in any gear for that matter) the engine will stall, and the wheel will lock. Just remember to pull that clutch in. Don't worry, it'll become second nature to you.

Brandon Wittekind If you're in fifth gear at 100kph/60mph (example) and you use the kill switch, the wheels dont lock im sure i tested it xD. But it will eventually lose all the speed very quick.
@thehooligan2689
@thehooligan2689 10 жыл бұрын
Papi Chulo Yes, not immediately but it will. Oh it WILL. xD I forgot to mention that the engine will not stall until you're at a low enough speed/RPM. Better pull that clutch in, it'll save you from a pained beanbag.

Man this takes me back. I first learned to ride a motorcycle on the original "How to" video. Took the MSF course a week later and had a major leg up on the other newbies. Passed no problem and have been riding ever since. Really appreciated the videos then and hope others get as much out of this one as I did then. You're awesome, M13.

I really wanna get a bike instead of a car (I'm not old enough to drive yet) but my mum is anti-bike (her ex had a bad accident when she was younger) so she doesn't want me getting a bike, so she wouldn't buy me a bike, or pay for lessons, so I'm gonna have to wait until i move out before I can even start my lessons, which is very anti-climactic.

here's what you do.. First, sign up for the training, secondly hire a homelessman to pretend to be your father/mother/guardian, third get him a fake id if needed, fourth tell your mom you're at a friends house playing video games, 5 save up until you move out so you can get a decent bike because after a few months of a 125/250 you will want to move up.

So I came here to see what I could find out and I must say your tutorials just laid it all out for me. You showed me exactly where I went wrong. I've decided to give myself two weeks rest by which time my arm will heal completely so I could go back to learn it. God bless you M13, God bless you. I bought my very first bike a Honda vtr 250 just this Saturday 14th Sept, 2013. Took it home with the help of my in-law who is a very experienced rider. So excited, I couldn't wait to ride so we took it out the next day for my riding lessons. He taught me all I needed to know but I was still very nervous to move the bike. When I finally did, I ended up crashing it. I hurt my arm seriously but no bones were broken. I lost interest in it and even wanted to sell it

It's one of the cheapest larger bikes around. The Ninja 650R. It's also the preferred choice of club racers as it has a cartridge gearing system and is easy to mod. It's also good for wheelies as it puts the engine oil near the rear so you still get lubed while riding at 12 o'clock.

You saved my life. I got on a bike for the first time yesterday and the whole time all i could think was "if i get nervous grab the clutch!". Sure enough i messed up with the throttle, started picking up too much speed, let it go and went to pull it again, (at this point completely nervous when i remember "GRAB THE CLUTCH") grabbed the clutch right before my nervous hand pulled the throttle and when it did, i calmly heard the engine rev up high enough to destroy me. Thanks

@Eddie Choi yes, you can. If you are in neutral, you can shift up to second. You don't have to shift down to first before you go to second. For example, you are rolling up to a red light; you shift down into neutral and before u can stop the light changes green and you are going too fast to shift to first; you can go ahead and shift back up to second and go from there.

I think one of the biggest surprises that I realized the first time I rode a motorcycle was something M13 said near the end, that you don't have to worry much about balancing because the bike balances itself. I remember that first time, when I turned onto the street and started gaining a bit of speed (albeit still in first gear), and the bike just popped up straight and I was like, "Hey, this is actually easy." (Well, easy until I had to make a U-turn for the first time.

Since you typed mum, I'm assuming you're British. I think there are laws up there restricting displacement due to age. Since this was 11 months ago, I'm assuming your birthday passed so you're 12, and even though I was in England for less than 24 hours, I'm pretty sure that 12 is still a little too young. Don't worry, I'm 15 and I've been waiting since I was 12 too XD and I still have 2 years to wait so don't worry and wait it out.

One of the best new-rider tips I learned at the MSF course was to keep your wrist flat on the throttle (instead of arched up), so if you panic, there's not a lot of "twist" left in your wrist that could open the throttle too much. If the wrist is arched up, you could panic and open the throttle all the way. So keep that wrist flat.

A good tip is also to let the bike warm up before u start practicing. Because atleast my CBRs have had auto choke wich keep the rpm at about 2,5-3k rpm until engine is properly warmed up, after that it idles at about 1k. Or if u drive a carburator one same with the manual choke. And adjusting the idle (wich usually is easy) just chk the manual, helps with stalling aswell. :) And I think starting out with a 50cc moped and then moving to 125cc and then go bigger to like 250-600.. And enduro models are most easiest to learn with in my opinion :) Thanx for an informative video. Dirt bikes and enduros because they are made for dropping etc. :) U dont want to drop ur brand new 250 or 600 street bike! :D

I've driven manual trans sports cars all my life.. but not bikes (Driven a motorcycle twice). Essentially you are correct, but if you are quite experienced with a manual transmission in a car, the same principle applies as it does to a bike. Slow enough on the clutch release, the car will move on it's own. The big reason why is because the engine must IDLE at X rpms, so by releasing the clutch that little bit of engine movement is enough to move the vehicle, car or bike.

also one thing I'd like to mention here for learners for very low speed riding (like crawling) is that don't put pressure on the handle bars & try to balance the bike (as mordeth13 says in video) you shouldn't hold the handle bars firmly in those crawling speeds.. t'll just cause imbalance & make u go left & right. You'll ride better and for longer periods with slightly lose grips on handle bars

If the clutch is pulled in then it will behave the same as if it were in neutral. I think that answers your question.

you forgot to mention to always have a kickstand up when you were talking about rookies not getting their bike started. some bikes have a kill switch built into the kickstand, so when the kickstand is down it won't start.

Thanks for the tutorial, Please upload part 2 and part 3. After viewing ur video , I kind of get a nice feeling, I can ride bike smoothly, specially in a crazy country like India where no one follows traffic rules. Eagerly looking forward for your videos.

I think its worth it, I have heard many good things about out. It is your life.. I already signed up for my class, but its not till the 11th. Its always best to learn from anyone you can, especially if its an actual certified class.

Nice video man. I tried teaching a friend hit to ride. All I had was a Cbr 954 and it didn't go well lol. Told him to watch this video. Btw most bikes will start with the kick stand down, but soon as you put it in gear the ignition will cut out. Hints how people leave their bike running and warm it up.

Another great piece of really obvious advice - (aside from shifting/clutch etc.) is to just ride a pushbike on the streets (preferably in medium/heavy traffic) for a few weeks. You'll learn to counter-steer, read traffic and how to turn. All of which are applicable to motorcycles.

Good video, I had a first time ride on a 125 today and I was very nervous. Only stalled once but the main problem I had was I almost fell over when turning lol, hurt my leg badly trying to catch it. But less painful than my dad punching me in the face after dropping the bike he just bought. Now I feel like I know a bit more and I can have another go more confidently... hopefully!
