Hi Phil - Hope you're good. Studies going well? Just want to say that I think all of your videos are great but this one is a particular favourite. To a newbie like me clear, comprehensive explanations are key and all your instruuctional videos are exactly that. Clear commentary, good use of colour when appropriate, introduction of helpful concepts e.g. "Berms are just a valley turned on its side" - fantastic! I may be a bit late to the party (I'm 48!) but I am loving MTB riding and your videos - instructional or from a trail somewhere or other - have greatly enhanced the whole experience for me. THANKS!

( yet another) Great quality tutorial! Like in some of your other videos, the additional layer graphics takes it to another level. Also different angles of the same shot, examples of doing things badly, repeats of critical sections etc. So much educational thought and skill goes into it. Last, but not least - I really like your choice of background music. When I practice bunny hopping I swear I can hear in my head that track from that "learning how to bunny hop" tutorial :) Thanks!

Great tips! Also, check out the condition of the berm before you barrel into it too fast. Things like erosion, rocks, roots, lose dirt, etc can all affect your line and speed. I chucked it into a berm that looked good at the beginning, then turned out to be eroded pretty bad later in the berm. I ended up flying off the top about 3/4 through.

Great tips. However, I think I discovered something on a flow trail today which goes against all advice I have heard: I SAT on the saddle (saddle obviously lowered) all the way through a berm with my pedals flat, riding the top all the way round. I have never cornered faster nor felt so stable. This technique also seems easier on the legs as you're not fighting, thereby saving energy for tougher features. I was mind blown but I can't find anyone else discussing this!

Phil and anyone else who fancies answering. I'm a bit of a late comer to mountain biking but loving how different it is as a discipline to road riding. Regarding berms. Where is your body during the berm? In my last few visits to my local bike park I've been noticing I tend to slide back on the bike so I'm much more over the rear wheel, like I would be on a descent. Is this right or should I be aiming to keep my body and weight much more central over the bike? I have a feeling I should be to maintain traction across both wheels but I didn't know if missing something. Like I said, any and all advice welcome. This noob needs direction! Cheers Matt
@calebm.56985 жыл бұрын
neuk01642 you should try to put your weight pretty central, but if it’s a steep trail you don’t want to get far forward on the bike. I would put your weight a little more forward then on a flat section to give your front tire grip, but still stay back on the bike. Keep your knees bent and your eyes on the trail in front of you as well. Good luck!
@neuk016425 жыл бұрын

Great video, but could you do one on pedal position when riding through berms? Where I live, some of the trail systems have very loose soil, often with gravel over hard pack, so it’s hard to know sometimes whether to keep the pedals level or to put the outside foot down…
@SkillsWithPhil5 жыл бұрын
Here's a cheat sheet: Good traction - keep feet level Bad traction (loose soil) - drop outside pedal.
