@@malcolmmoore I want to get really good at snowboarding so have been watching a lot of YT videos to prep for the season. I'm sure nothing beats time on the slopes but during my initial journey, it seems the popular snowboard youtubers that the algorithm pushes on people are basically in the "watch me do tricks for 90% of the video and let me sell you subpar products" mode. Unsubscribed from most of those and mainly follow you, snowboard addiction, and Ryan Knapton. If I was in France, I'd definitely get lessons from you. Thank you for all the effort you put into these. This drill is pure gold! I've been in sports my whole life (I'm in my 50s) and I've never been taught a drill in any sport that was as effective as this. Had me riding switch in no time today after having attempted several times before. You get that immediate contrast between doing the turn the correct way, feeling where your weight is and what you're doing with your feet, knees, ankles, and then you immediately try to apply that riding switch. The initiation became so much more obvious as well as the problem with a tendency to not weight / engage that front foot, or to unweight it too early and careen across the slope. Previously, when I tried to ride switch, I knew I was facing the same problems I used to have riding regular as a beginner, but I didn't know how to fix them until this drill made them so obvious. Thanks Malcolm!

Same here! I’ve been practicing my switch riding before watching this video and I always start my switch runs with a few 180 spins. It helps my switch foot to mimic the movements of my regular foot. However, my struggle is my toe edge turns when I ride switch. When I started snowboarding in my regular stance, toe edge turns came naturally, I only struggled with the heel edge turn. When I ride switch, I almost can’t turn on my toe edge without kicking with my back foot. I’ll try this exercice, hopefully I can get my toe edge turn corrected!

nice tutorial! A toeside switch turn is indeed the more difficult one, especially on dual or progressive sidecut boards, there is another tip which helps a bit: stretch rear leg to bring weight forward before starting toe side turn, in turn initiation lean toeside , change edge and bring knees together, this bends board and compensates the bigger radius at the tail (which is in switch case in front) of these boards. Also good in general for muscle memory/ brain programing: buy longboard and push switch as one exercise and as a second dance from regular to switch.. both trains the switch memory in brain and you save training time on piste.

On a day when you have time for only a focused video, it would be great to go through the revert in more detail. What move do you make to initiate the revert? Where is your weight? Is the board flat throughout? Is a revert only done on a traverse or can it be done on the fall line too? Things like that. This seems like a good way to motivate riding switch every day.

Fantastic video, this exercise would have helped me a ton while learning switch last season. I really enjoyed how much you stressed thinking about what you're doing in your regular stance, this cannot be overstressed and was key to making my switch riding click. I started by doing traversals while holding an edge, and gradually implemented turning; funnily enough heel to toe transitions were easy and toe-heel had my board sliding out or me leaning back trying to force my heel edge to engage and failing every time. It wasn't until I gave it a deep think while riding regular and contrasting it with my struggle on switch that I realized I was just flopping over and not using my ankles to dig the new edge in, in addition to not having enough weight on the front foot. Mindfully fixed both of those aspects and wouldn't you know it, have been riding switch very well ever since. I think people get caught up in just doing reps to become better at physical activities, but mental effort and assessment pays dividends. Thanks again Malcom!

A couple of falls later I found myself doing this drill intuitively and feeling pretty good. Thats so awesome that this is your advice for learning! You really are the best instructor on youtube this is my first season being able to ride the whole time and all my snowboarder coworkers recommended you specifically. Keep up the good work you truly are appreciated. My first week on a board I had terrible posture and counter rotated for all my turns and took lots of nasty spills. Another week grinding the basic of basics you preach on your channel and its been smooth sailing ever since :D

Trying to do some slow 360s is what has helping me learn to use my switch stance edges the most

This is doing wonders! I mastered the heel turn quite quickly but the switch toe turn has been my weakness. Now I’ve been practicing the second part of the exercise for 2 hours and I totally get what you are saying, Thant when doing a correct regular toe turn before every switch toe turn I can correct my self and feel the difference, hence teaching my self. I found that I was late in my edge change and ended up spending way to much time with a flat base in the fall line. Now I’m starting to feel much more comfortable and much more aware of my edges with the reverts. After this break it’s time to link it all together. PS love the vibe of the music as well 😊😊

Gave this a whirl yesterday. Definitely effective though I took some good spills. I’m just a few days into my return to boarding after 25 years, and I spent the afternoon totally confused both regular and switch!

I have just one question: where did you find an empty ski resort?

Definitely definitely helped me!!! These exercises truly helped me feel so much more comfortable on my turns. That led to more time riding switch and even more comfort!
