THANKS! I started sailing with a very shabby Laser in a sailing club. Really NOTHING was good about the rig. Nothing fitted or it was actually missing. As if the boat was used as a spare parts warehouse by other members. When I see your video with all the rigging parts, which arent excisting currently on the boat, I can understand now how the Laser is rigged properly. Thank you a lot for your video. I think you explained me more in 7 minutes than my sailing club in 2 years. I'm a little angry about that with my sailing club. It seems like I have much to talk to change something... !

The video explains cunningham setup with single blocks, but most of the video shows the cunningham rigged with double blocks. Is there enough line in the kit for a double block setup?

I always thought the Laser was purpose built with a 1-piece mast ... I got into sailing via a Sunfish and AMC _( I think )_ developed and sold an upgrade kit to take it close to a Laser .. 2-piece anodized aluminum mast and an anodized boom, luff sleeve sail with battens, boom vang, traveller. if I recall, one of the first steps rigging it was running a line from deck up through a pulley at the masthead and back down to the deck.

There have been several 'aftermarket' type alternatives based on the standard Laser hull and rigging, developed and marketed by previous builders. It is possible you are very much correct about those steps. Our video here is intended to outline steps for rigging a Laser as it is known to the majority of owners, but great to share awareness about some of the alternative setups that might be out there. We find this is particularly useful when attempting to make sense of equipment found with a used boat. Thanks for your insights!

I asked Google a vague physics question about photonic lasers, & this is what she gave me. I think ropework is awesome, so I kept watching. I had no idea what you were doing, & 90% of your jargon is foreign to me. Which of those hardware accessories might be useful for suspending a human safely & dynamically? (think marionette)

This looks like 4:1 on the outhaul, but I thought 6:1 was more common for racing? Also, the cascade on the cunningham is 8:1 vs 10:1, right?
@SergioMiletto8
@SergioMiletto8 3 жыл бұрын
Cunningham is only 6 :1 or 8:1 no one uses 10:1 because it is useless and you would need to pull too much line, in the video he rigs a 6 to 1 Cunningham which for a laser radial is optimal, for a standard sail its preferable to rig a 8 to1 by adding a block and a bit more line

Hmm, your mast retainer seems to have some slack in it. looks like if you turtle the mast may slide out a little but not completely out if the downhaul and outhaul were not completely on. Would probably slide out several inches until the shock cord that is run through the retainer bowline gets caught up in that little eye. Just my observation. Thanks for the video
@WestCoastSailing
@WestCoastSailing 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Gado. Thanks for your note and for enjoying the video. You are right that the retainer is a bit slack. The goal with that isn't to necessarily keep the mast all the way down in the mast step, but rather to prevent it from popping out above the mast step. A bit of play is okay whereas the real damage that can occur is when the mast slides fully out of the step and can smash into the deck while turtled. Hope this info helps clarify things a bit.

what size blocks for the cunningham
@WestCoastSailing
@WestCoastSailing 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Richie - In this video, we're using Harken 22mm Micro Blocks for the cunningham and outhaul set ups. These work great with the 5mm control line as shown here. If using 4mm control lines, commonly found on many racing spec Lasers, we recommend the Harken 16mm Airblocks. You can find either of these collections via the links below: 22mm Micro Blocks - www.westcoastsailing.net/default/boat-parts/hardware/blocks/22mm-micro-blocks.html 16mm Air Blocks - www.westcoastsailing.net/default/boat-parts/hardware/blocks/16mm-airblocks.html

At 4:49, the secondary out-haul is threaded through the boom eye on the starboard side. However, at 4:56 when the fella is attaching the Velcro strap, the out-haul is seen as threaded thru the boom eye on the port side...boy, that is magic!...lol

Each component was dealt with very clearly, I thought. If you own a sailboat or a Laser it would make sense. Sail, rudder, daggerboard, mast, boom all need their own independent controls and safeties.
