This is a long comment . Please bear with me. This comment is for older disabled fisherman like me. I've been bass fishing for 40 years. When people started talking about using a wide gap hook, I tried several types and used them exclusively for about 18 months and missed a lot of hookups. Thought maybe I was doing something wrong. But, when I went back to my original favorite hook, a TruTurn hook 5/0, my hook sets went back to normal and I caught many more bass. The 5/0 TruTurn hook seems to be about equal to a 4/0 wide gap hook. The TruTurn has a slimmer shank. You might ask why I'm using such an old-fashioned hook. I'm 70 years old and have to fish sitting down in very good seat with a back support. Because of that, I cannot set a hook like a person standing on the shore or a boat deck. The TruTurn hook pretty much matches the shape shown in this video. I've never been sure that the twist in the shank helps to get the hook point out of the worm but it may. It does make it slightly more difficult to get a straight worm. I use this hook mainly for it's slim shank. It allows the hook to pass through the worm with less effort. I've come very close to catching my first 10 pound bass and the hook held up extremely well. I don't think the hook has a problem with strength unless maybe you're catching 20 lb bass. I also use a soft worm. My favorite worm, fishing for large bass, is a 10" Culprit shad colored worm. Being both black and silver it seems to work well in deeply stained water as well as in clear water. On the pond I fish, I can catch lots of small bass using a 7 1/2" worm. Using a larger worm keeps me from damaging the smaller bass and thereby allowing them to grow. They usually grab the tail and either let go or move the worm on the hook and I get to leave them in the water. For those of you who remember when the Culprit came out, it was about 40 years ago. This old lady fishes with a hook and worm that were available 40 years ago and I haven't seen a Texas Rig setup that works better overall. The new harder worms probably stand up better but, for those of us who can't do a normal hook set, they are problematic. A final note, this is for everybody, you might want to try some of the older lures and see if they don't work as well or better than many of the newer lures. I use both and the mix works best for me. 🎣🐋😉👩‍🦳

As a beginner angler, I’ve been doing lots of research and I can’t help but notice how contradictory all the advice is. I just read an article about the Texas rig and it said the opposite of this video; that offset hooks have a better hook up rate than straight shank. So I went out and bought a bunch of offset hooks 😅 I fully understand that Chuck clarified he isn’t saying his way is the only/best way, but what he said makes perfect sense and I have been missing a lot of hook sets. @@ChuckPippinBassFishing Gamakatsu Finesse Hybrid hook perfectly does 3 in 1 (worms, creatures and swimbaits). If you've got only one rod for that, it perfectly works. Roland Martin uses EWG most of the time and rarely misses a bite. Even had some 10 catches out of 10 casts.

Chuck, I started using a Roboworm Rebarb hooks for Drop shot rigs, essentially a small version of the hook you use in this video, and my hook up and landing ratio moved way up. The angle of the hook tip lying just below the skin of the plastic is so well-placed to come jumping out to snag the mouth of a bass. I'll give it a try now on a T-rigged worm! Brad

I'm not a bass fisherman but tried Texas rigging a worm for walleye recently. I noticed that the senko type worms I bought had a small groove in the side which I assume is a spot to allow the hook to stay flat to the worm body and unexposed to snags but also ready for hook sets. I think it prevents the problem you described of having the worm body slide down from the top of the offset when setting the hook

First rig is A standard Pegged Texas rig on a EWG hook. The second one is a flipping/punching rig designed for fishing thick grass mats, punching through water lilies and fishing heavy cover. Not exactly the same thing. Technically, "Texas rigging" is just the way you fix the worm on the hook, but these two rigs are two different things entirely. For those guys who dislike the EWG hook on a regular Texas rig, you should be using a regular round bend offset worm hook anyway. There's no need for an EWG unless you're using a large, thick or wide lure like a creature bait, not your average skinny worm like a trick worm or power worm.

Yeah, I prefer a straight shank hook also. The offset hook moves the point parallel to the worm for a short distance instead of out of the worm, delaying penetration of the point into the fish and it does more damage to the worm with each hookset, making it necessary to use a fresh worm more often. Also, we don't have a whole lotta 10-pounders here in Illinois, so I'm normally using a 1/0 hook with a 6" worm on 8-lb test and 1/8 or 3/16 ounce sinker. The only time I'll upsize from that is on water that I know produces 4-pounders and up frequently, and then it's usually just a bigger worm. I'll normally take 3 to 6 fish before I need to use a new worm. I'm old school, so I peg the sinker with a toothpick, but only when I'm in the thick stuff.

Which one blows through more plastic? I've used both ways, although never used a screw lock bullet weight (never seen one of those before). Depending on desired fall and presentation I either go with or w/o abobber stop or can also use a toothpick to avoid exposure like when using the rubber bobber stop. The worm in my video was actually an 8" worm, but i do often use 10" worms. It's really just because that's what I've found they like to eat here on the Kissimmee Chain of Lakes. If a 6" worms works best for you, on your lakes, I'd stick with it.

I have done a lot of deep water stuff at Butler. I know that place very well. Sounds like a good video idea. Right now, the water there is very high and it's not fishing very good. On the 1st rig with the EWG hook, "push that point back in there" is misleading, you just barely place the hook point under the skin of the bait, that way when the fish hits the hook point becomes exposed and you set the hook. It's all about fine tuning so the hook point can be exposed more and easier, however, test it, tap the worm with your finger and try to feel the hook point, if you feel it too easy, bury it some more, not easy then redo lighter. This is crucial as you don't want the hook point to become too easily exposed when your bouncing it on the bottom banging rocks, weeds, and wood. Depending on the density and slickness of the type of plastic, if the worm doesn't move off the hook point easy, work it up and down on the hook slightly and create a larger hole (where the hook point went through) which allows the worm to come off AND move away from the hook point easier. This simple trick (for lack of a better word) increased my hook-up percentage/ratio drastically! More space between the hook point and the worm = better chance of hook set = maximum hook-up percentage!

I have used a similar method when I didn't have the offset hooks. This is probably what was used prior to the offset hooks being common (speculating here). Also can be good if a two hook system is going to be used. It is definitely a good method.

Great tips, think I'll try this. You definitely pegged me when you said if you are into Bass fishing then you need to learn how to worm fish, and to be honest I struggle with it. My largest question is with that setup is how sturdy does that worm remain? How many casts/bites will that work sustain with how the corkscrew weight sits up top shredding the plastic and the way the hook is in sideways how it will create a tear back to the middle of the worm at the entry point. I feel like this setup is for literally non cast drops. If you full cast this setup does the worm hold up to tears and shredding? Serious concern haha

What size straight shank hook do you use? I tried Aberdeen and bait hooks but it doesn’t look right.

4/0 straight shank round bend.

Been using that style 25+ yrs and the problem I ran into was stores not carrying straight shank , definitely not crazy about it they don't go through lily pads to well

Is this possible with a spinning rod ? Do you let the bait touch the ground before reeling it in and moving the bait ? New to this , thanks

Yep, spinning rods is now problem. The best technique for a Texas rig is to let it hit the bottom. Then, slowly drag or lightly hop it off the bottom. Long pauses in between moving it.
