In this Rigs, Jigs & Lures episode, I go over step-by-step how to rig a trolling squid, also known as a squirt squid. This is one of the most common and best fishing lures used throughout the world. Tried and true to it's original design, shape and form, this lure is the go-to lure if you want to catch more fish. Used for deep sea fishing, charter fishing and offshore fishing, this lure can't be beat. If you troll, you've more than likely seen this lure... So here's some advice and tips on how to rig it up and put it to use.
Enjoy,
Tight lines & good vibes.

Hi Heath, Great info to make your own rigs. There are a lot of rigs that can be made at home and save money. We use a modified "Hi-Lo" rig for flounder and a leader with a "dropper loop" with a teaser for striper fishing. Thanks, Mickey

Good video but you failed to mention that when using mono line always moisten the knot before you tighten down. The heat generated on the mono when you tighten down can weaken the line by 60% or more, so the 40lbs mono you started with might only have a breaking strain of around 18bs. By missing to do this with your knots could possibly cause you to loose that fish of a .lifetime.

Question ? you used barrel sinker will round sinkers do same job in squid head.
@SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing
@SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing Жыл бұрын
Honestly I've never tried the round sinker in the head... I'd say you'll be ok to troll it if you can get it wedged in there... might just take a little more elbow grease to get the lure setup.
@pakde8002
@pakde8002 3 жыл бұрын
Hello, new subscriber expat in Bali. I wanted to check what length of skirt do you like for this setup and just out of curiosity why don't you use the improved clinch knot? Have you found any negatives or benefits regarding the knot and the variation, and your opinion on the uni knot in this situation. Thanks for the reply anyone who happens to be out there.
@SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing
@SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks a million for watching, leaving some great feedback, and asking some good questions. I truly appreciate it and your support for the channel. To me, personally, there's no difference between the classic clinch and the improved... sending the line back through the tag loop doesn't strengthen the knot. They both absorb the same amount of shock and stretch and expand in the same manner, which is why I say there's really not much difference. I've caught monster sized fish with the classic and have had no problems. If tied correctly they are both powerhouse simple knots that are ultra effective. I tend to avoid the uni knot. It's what is considered an abrasive knot. Any time you use overhand knots on monofilament, you are causing and abrasion & warping point that has compromised the integrity on the line, thus weakening it before you've even put pressure on it. The only time I use a uni knot, is to tie the base knot of my line to my spool, when spooling the reel with line. Hope this helps. Thanks again. Tight lines & take care ;)

Wondering if you need cable or wire if your fishing for kings or other fish with teeth. Or if you just take the snap off for the stealth presentation. Also are you fishing these on planers or just drop shooting them with the sinker.
@SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing
@SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks a million for watching and asking a couple of great questions. Yes you can use wire.. although, it may reduce your hook up ratio, I'd risk the cut off for a more stealthy approach, personally. you can use them on a planer, and I do, however, I'll place a mylar sea witch in front of it and tip the hooks with a bonito strip... That's kingfish candy. Hope this helps. Tight lines & take care ;)
@mattbugg4568
@mattbugg4568 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the reply appreciate it as I really want to go on a king trip at some point as I watched guys coming into haulover canal with them 20 years ago and never made it. I have one 30-60 lb boat rod spooled with 80lb braid and took a gander at tying up my own planer harness out of 100lb fireline I got a kit with about 100+ squid baits but have been watching squid jigging videos and wonder if its a option to rig live squid to troll or not. But this seems like a legit way to get around bullet heads which seem pricy after you spend time to paint them to match the colors of the squid. And you could probably tie tinsil to a tube fly rig to insert into the sinker. Planning to be down around the longboat area next summer and noticed it is only to about 10 meters several miles offshore wondering what depths these things will operate in in the gulf.
@SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing
@SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing 3 жыл бұрын
The gulf is real skinny water for many miles... A typical offshore trip you have to head out about 50 miles.

You don't control the depth. It trolls just below the surface naturally.. if you want to manipulate the depth, you'll have to use a planer

Thanks for watching. Great question, sorry I didn't go over that important piece of info. When I'm trolling, I'll pull a couple of baits, one just beyond the White wash of the wake of the boat and the other about 200 feet back. If your pulling more baits you can go even deeper, however, i wouldn't let out much more than 300 ft. For measuring distance i usually count 1 second equals about 10 feet. Good luck & tight lines ;)
