Skater & trainer Lana Luvhurts demonstrates two methods for skating downhill on quad rollerskates: Carving & the Turnaround Toe-stop.
I use carving the vast majority of the time because it's dynamic and flexible, you can get down hills slow & flowy or fast & aggressive, and it works on just about any slope that's skateable as long as you have some room to carve and traffic isn't an issue. The turnaround toe-stop is great for situations where carving won't work or isn't ideal, it works in narrow spaces, very steep grades, and gives you a lot of control, but the streets eat through toe-stops quickly so this method is more of an as-needed option. A chunky, medium-hard toe-stop works great.
Plows: A plow can work on hills if the surface-to-wheel situation allows for enough surface slide, and if the plow is effective enough for the steepness of the grade. The softness of outdoor wheels + grippy asphalt can make plows difficult or less effective. You want to test it out before you're bombing down at high speed. xx

Or you could just recklessly tear down it straight forward and continue down the road at breakneck speed with no idea where you'd stop

That used to be my only method and is admittedly the most exhilarating but after it ended in eating rocks I learned better methods.

I just came back from a road skate only to end up going down hill try to plow stop, there was a speed bump, flew up over it, and landed on my face and elbow. Only to think yeah I should've waited for my pads that are coming this Saturday.

What scared me when I was skating a few weeks ago was an unexpected false flat I came across while skating on a street. You don’t see these things if you’re scouting skate locations in a car because it looks leveled. What seems like a little decline becomes big on wheels with momentum. I didn’t fall, but I got low and stayed near the grass (with my gear on). This video encourages me to get out and try that section again. I like learning new techniques, and don’t want anything to deter me from skating.

Glad you handled that surprise incline! I've been there too, it's just going to happen as we expand our skate experiences outside. I've skated a lot of treacherous roads that looked fine from the car haha Good on you for continuing to go for it xx

I've tried weaving down wide paths but I didn't think to do it as laterally as this, I will definitely try it this way because I was still picking up too much speed to be comfortable last night, great video!

How does this not eat your toe stops. I feel like I'm going through so many toe stops since skating outside 🤦 Would you recommend any in particular for outside?
@ThisRad
@ThisRad 3 жыл бұрын
This does eat through your toe stops, especially if you're doing it a lot or for a long stretch. I went down this hill about 30 times for this video, and ate through about 1/3 of the Bionic super stopper, which is a great medium hardness stopper. I usually only use the turnaround toe stop outdoors for quick stops or for the occasional incline that's tricky to maneuver, like a narrow or steep ramp. For hills I most often do a combination of carving (sometimes backwards) and a wide plow, and I'll bomb a hill if the situation is right but that comes with risks. My favorite toe stops are Roll-line ambra round. They typically last me 6 months with high use.

Super helpful! Thank you!! :D What toe stops do you recommend for outdoor skating? I feel like mine tend to wear down quickly. Also, I feel like they aren't close enough to the ground. Appreciate it! Keep making videos!!
@ThisRad
@ThisRad 3 жыл бұрын
Hey there, thanks! I prefer Roll-Line ambra round toe stops. They're hard enough to be very durable including on asphalt and concrete, but still soft enough for control and they have excellent rebound and grip. You do have to break them in a little because they come rounded on the contact area, but I just do a few turnaround stops on the sidewalk or go backwards on my stops down an incline and they're good to go. They come in both metric and imperial versions. A lot of plates use imperial threading, like Atom/Pilot, PowerDyne, Sure Grip, Crazy Venus, Chaya. Here's a link so you can see what they look like: www.derbywarehouse.com/Roll-Line_Ambra_Round_Toe_Stops/descpage-STFRASP.html I used Bionic Super Stoppers for a few years and they hold up well to outdoor skating (I use the turnaround toe stop a lot of the time so that says something about their resilience) but they still get eaten up going down a hill on your toe stops--I'm wearing them in this video. Here's a link if you want to see what they are: www.derbywarehouse.com/Bionic_Super_Stopper_Toe_Stops_Pair/descpage-BSTOP.html It lists their hardness as "hard" but I'd say it's more of a medium. If your plate uses adjustable toe stops, then you can loosen your locking mechanism and unscrew your toe stop to lower it, then retighten the lock to secure it. The way I measure my adjustments is with your skate off, tip it forward until the toe stop is fully touching the floor, and then with your other hand, measure how many fingers you can get under the back wheels (with your hand in kind of a chopping position under the wheels). Give yourself some time to adjust to the new position. When I first went lower, I tripped over my toe stops a few times before I adjusted...but if that keeps happening, you probably want to adjust again. One note of caution: You always want at least 1cm of the toe stop threaded into the housing, this ensures a secure lock and prevents the housing from being permanently damaged by the extreme torque we put on our toe stops. Hope this helps!

How do I skate down a sidewalk? I'm too scared to go in the street 😭
@ThisRad
@ThisRad 3 жыл бұрын
Hey there, that's a great question. I don't have an easy answer because there are a lot of variables (skater skill level, wheels, how steep of a slope, the condition of the sidewalk). The turnaround stop is the method I use when I don't have the space to carve, and/or the slope is very steep or irregular, and the bottom of the slope is unreliable for bombing it. It's a stop that's easy to control, and you can come to a complete stop or keep your speed very slow with simple adjustments to the pressure you put on your toe stop. Learn to alternate legs so you can wear down your toe stops evenly. If the surface is sketchy (e.g. grooves, a lot of cracks/holes/rocks) or challenging for other reasons--e.g. a ramp that ends in stairs, there's no shame in side stepping your way down by turning sideways to the slope so you don't roll and stepping one foot at a time. Obviously you're not going to want to do this for a long distance, but it works for tricky situations. Sometimes we get blessed with a very smooth sidewalk and if you're able to plow, that can help you control your speed. Most of the time I'm not in a situation where plowing is ideal when I'm street skating, usually because my outdoor wheels are too soft, but I've done it before on smooth sidewalks, enough to shave off some speed--in that situation you're really thinking about digging your heels down and pushing out, and drawing a lot of power from your glutes. Plows seem easier than they are, in my opinion, and on non-rink surfaces they can be challenging.

I did the first technique downhill like a few months ago ?? I lost control and went straight downhill at a crazy speed and i saw a car coming from my right and in attempt to avoid it i skated towards the pavement sidewalk and back onto the street and fell and ended up in a split with all my body weight leaning forward , keep in mind id never even attempted to do the splits in the 18 years of my life. Anyways i lied there lifless because i seriously thought i died my legs didnt allow me to get up , i couldn't move them the , the woman in the car that would've collided with me asked me if i needed help and all i managed to squeeze out was a uh-uh, i just lied on the street on my back for a good 10 minutes and grabbed my now cracked phone and called my waifu to pick me up, didn't skate for 5 months

Hey friend, so glad you weren't seriously injured! Must have been terrifying. I've lost control bombing hills a few times, and left a bit of my bum on a few hills. You had the right instinct to turn towards the sidewalk, and even though you fell, that's far better than the alternative. I don't know if you've tried it again, but if not, it's normal to feel some fear after a big spill, just keep in mind that we all have these moments (even advanced and pro skaters) and the way through it is to try again when you're up for it. With hills, because they're not forgiving of mistakes, it can help a lot to break it down into achievable parts. Find a more relaxed slope, without traffic and some flat space at the bottom so you have room to experiment. This could be an incline that doesn't even appear to be a hill but has enough of a slope for you to experience the increase in momentum. Try carving (slaloming) from one side to the other and continuing the roll uphill until you stop naturally--I demo this in the video, your path would look like a smile or crescent. And then just pause to take a breath, and repeat the crescent to the other side. If you learn the toe stop method, which can be practiced on flat surfaces first (turn around toe stop), then try it on a slope, you'll have the confidence of knowing you have options. I also strongly recommend full safety gear (helmet, knee, elbow pads + wrist guards). Good luck! x
