Skating outdoors is terrifying! I'm in the UK and our pavements are full of potholes, weeds and dogsh*t. I have been really struggling to find somewhere nice and flat. Our street is lovely and quiet, but it's very bumpy and has a lot of inclines. I'm going to keep trying it though. I'm not confident at stopping quickly but I really think watching this video will help as I've also been using the indoor skating method, so probably have been making things harder for myself. Thanks Deb!

As a kid I always skated at my school with my friends. Now as an adult trying to learn again, schools are still a good place to go: open flat pavement for playground games means smoother going for my skates. If you can find an outdoor basketball or tennis court in a park, that works, too. Just be sure to leave if someone comes wanting to use it for its real purpose.

I'm so impressed by your mohawk stops (is that what they're called). I'm really determined to get those down. I use ploughs and occasionally my toe stop. But being able turn at speed and put two toe stops down seems critical. I've been skating at the park while my kids play, there was a little boy trying to learn to skate. I helped him out, it was awesome.

Hello Dirty Deborah Harry! Greetings from Bulgaria (a country in Southeast Europe). I love the way you say your name at the beginning of each video - it sounds like some kind of mantra, it’s very euphonious. I got my skates three weeks ago and I had to wait one week to the snow to melt so I can finally try them. Here in my country there is no such huge culture of roller skating as in America. We don’t even have roller skate rinks (only ice rinks). Also our streets are mainly constructed by cracks, holes and any kind of bumps. At least some park alleys are fine. But all of this can not stop me from skating, so enough of it. While I was waiting the snow to go away, I started to watch your videos. And I want to tell you - THANK YOU, Dirty Deborah Harry! Thank you for being so great and passionate teacher!

Pretty skates! What kind are they? Great advice. Also, a mic 🎤 muff is just essential when filming outside. But great job, I can’t wait for more from you. Your obvious love of skating and teaching really comes through. 👍🏼

Debra thanks for all the great videos. I'm in New Jersey and have just started skating at the age of 69. I never skated as a child so its completely new to me but I'm enjoying it a lot. You've showed me so many great tips. Thanks, Thanks, Thanks!

Thanks for this. Just got my outdoor skates yesterday (Sure-Grips, of course, and made sure to tell them "Dirty Debbie sent me.") Got my homework now to do at the rink this weekend. 64 and only been skating for a few weeks. Obsessed!! ❤

Can I just say that I LOVE this woman! Her personality and humour makes her videos not only super educational but also super interesting. I'm a beginner and I'm learning so much between her and Indy Jamma Jones from Planet Roller Skate. They make me super excited to just go out there and skate! Much love

Curbs are easy. Just jump them! LOL Granted...that may come easier to me since the rink I grew up at actually HAD a curb. Don't know why they built it like that. There was a step down onto the floor, though. About 3-4 inches, so, it really was like a...carpeted curb. Every regular there learned to just skate on the carpet as fast as possible and jump off it at a very early age! LOL

Our rink too! However, that was a whole lot easier back in my teem age years. Then again I also have had 4 different surgeries from injuries over the past 20 years, so I'm also a little more skittish

Your videos are awesome! I’m 37 just starting roller skating, used to roller blade casually 20 years ago! I’ve been watching your videos before going down the street to practice while my older son rides his scooter and am learning a lot! I’m home with my kids during this pandemic and this has given me something to work towards that is fun, outside, and I can have my kids on their scooters with me. Thanks for the content!

On one hand im reassured that for at least most of the absolute basics of outdoor skating i already had been using correct technique on the other hand wow! Im blown away by how smoothly you make it around all the outdoor obstacles and how easy you make it look! I primarly skate outdoors and i definitely see myself get more confidemt around routes i skate often however i only took notice of that fact when you pointed out beginners should pick one area for practice. Thanks for this video and for highlighting that just skating outdoors isnt specific enough practice because now i know how to approach improving these skills in a more organised and planned way 👍👍

I need to find outdoor areas with smooth pavement. The parking lot and trail I tried earlier had too many pebbles.

Excellent tips. I have skated and skateboarder a lot in my life. The stop technique is like snow skiing. I get a lot of it but don't have the terms. You do a good job teaching. Good detail.

Thank you so much. Sometimes it is difficult to explain technical skating skills in a manner that is enjoyable to watch so I appreciate this comment.

Omg this helped me so much. I never understood why i felt so unstable when skating outdoors even on flat concrete and asphalt. Now i know that i have to skate differently. Thanks so much!

I bought a pair of roller skates today on a whim. I had bulky terrible Barbie skates as a kid (the kind with all the wheels in a line) and maybe wore them like 3-4 times. Then I wanted to be one of the cool kids and get heelies sneakers with that little back wheel, never ever even got close to actually trying. Then at one point as a kid, i got invited to a birthday party at a roller rink, I fell a lot but the normal four wheel skates weren't nearly as scary as my other "attempts" at skating. I like the idea of skating outdoors to get from point A to B and man... skates sure are pretty! Hopefully this time I'll stick with it, I have a feeling I will! Extremely glad these kinds of videos show me what to look at for and stuff!

You are so informative. I got skates purely for skating to high school but I had trouble bc I didn't know how to properly stride and place my feet (I also thought the roads were way too damaged and crunchy. But i guess you can go through those!!) And I learned so much from this video And the other one you did. You are truly amazing And I hope you never stop these vids.

I love your channel. I'm an old skool 80s skater and wanting to get back into it for cardio and exercise and your videos are helping me remove the rust. I still have about 90% balance but it's just remembering the basics and thanks to you, I'm moving through it quickly. Keep it up DDH. Love the name!! Greetings from New Zealand :D

U should make a video on jam plugs or just different types of toe stops

Great idea. I stopped using toe stops when I first began training on the banked track for the Roller Derby. Inadvertently, it forced me to become a much better skater, having not to depend on my toe stops. My balance substantially improved. Hockey stop both forward & backward too

Hi Deb! I found your videos and I'm completely obsessed with skating now! I haven't skated in well over 15 years. I bought myself some "Toy" (learned that from your video lol) skates and upgraded the wheels to Atom Pulse wheels. I'm so excited and can't wait to start skating! Thanks so much for putting out such fun, energetic and informative outdoor skating tutorial videos!! You rock!!! 👍💕👍💕
