Roughly 2 years ago, I made my first material about running a Coffee Lake CPU, mainly the 8700K in a Z170/Z270 motherboard, and it got a lot of interest back then. Many people wondered why isn't it natively supported, and is the mod limited to Asrock motherboards only. It wasn't easy to setup the motherboard to run the newer CPUs in the early days. Modifying the motherboard BIOS to support and run the 6 and 8 core CPUs wasn't an easy thing to do. Many features were lacking with the early mods, like missing features such as Hyper-Threading, or limited overclocking support.
Later on, the whole process became dramatically easier, thanks to the tool published by the guys over at Win-Raid. An easy-to-use tool was released, that modifies the official BIOS of the motherboard you wish to use, with one simple click. There are important things you have to know before you use it though. The CPU model and revision has to be known exactly, like if your CPU is P0 or R0 Stepping 9900K that you are going to run on the modified motherboard. For example my earliest ES 8700K doesn't post with the BIOS I created, but a retail one does, even though they are the same stepping and revision.
The hard part of modifying the motherboard itself to get the system turned on still exists. You still have to short the two particular contact pads together under the CPU, or find the same modification on the motherboard itself. On this video, I show you how to locate the Socket Occupied pin (SKT_OCC pin) to force the motherboard to turn on when you press the power on button. Also with many motherboards, especially from ASUS, you can't just flash any BIOS file to the BIOS chip, so you have to make necessary modifications in order to force flash the file using the BIOS Flashback function.
So on this video I will be modifying an ASUS Maximus IX Formula to support a P0 stepping 9700K, which a local guy gave me, as he wants to use them in his daily system. I will do all the necessary modifications on the motherboard itself, modify the BIOS and see how the modified Maximus IX Formula compares against the top of the line Coffee Lake motherboard, the Z390 DARK from EVGA.
Different parts of the video:
Introduction and hardware modifications: 00:00
Modifying the BIOS file to support Coffee Lake CPUs: 19:27
Flashing the BIOS file using ASUS USB BIOS Flashback: 31:37
Results and Conclusion: 37:40

So it's true that noone needed NEW Motherboards since the release of the i7-6700K, but the INDUSTRY has forced us to buy NEW Motherboards every other CPU release. Thank you so much for sharing this video. 👍🙂👍

@@greebj wow thats great. Upgrading a laptop that way saves even more money... but isnt the GPU holding you back? By the way. I am hyped for B/X370 Ryzen 5000 mods. I am almost 100% sure it will happen. The chipset of it is almost the same as the supported B450 chipsets. Most likely just needs the new AGESA to be embedded into the BIOS.

Great guide! btw: the reason the tool fails in the vbios step seems to be that the tool can't deal with whitespaces in the filepath to either one of the executables or the biosfile -> extract the newest version of the tool to a location which does not contain whitespaces (for example: "C:\coffeelaketool\") then the "Update GOP & VBIOS" step should work as well :)

I hope you realize you saved me a bunch of money since I did not have to upgrade my motherboard. This worked perfectly for me. Except I have an Asrock motherboard so my flashing process was a bit different than yours so I had to figure that out. Thank you very much in your effort in this video. I was looking to upgrade my 6600k straight to a 9600k as it's at a pretty good price for performance right now so I bought one thinking the socket was all that mattered for compatibility. Little did I know it was not compatible with my motherboard even though it's LGA1151. After following this guide (except I did not feel comfortable soldering on my motherboard), I modded my bios and placed a piece of reflective metallic crafting tape to bridge the two pads on my CPU and it works! Thank you again dude. PS. You don't need the UEFI tool for Asrock MOBO, just mod the bios and rename the file (including the file type) to exactly what it was before it was modified downloaded from the Asrock website, then flash it normally, it worked for me.

Hey Luumi, great work. I'm looking at doing the same on another board (M8H) that has a different PCB layout around the BIOS Flashback chip - and there isn't a set of pads in the equivalent position - at least not on the top of the board. It looks from your close-up that one of the two pads that need to be connected to defeat the flashback security lock runs to pin number 36 on the IC. Is that correct? On my board, pin 36 vias to the underside - where it runs to a similar-looking pair of easily bridgable pads, the other of which is on a track that connects to pin 1 of the flashback chip. Does that sound like the ones to be connecting?

Hi, I thinked about this alot. I was thinking It is such a hassle to do but then I saw Linus video about the 300 dolar cheap pc build with modified laptop CPU on h110 board and it seemed very reasonable. I talked with the seller on Aliexpress, he sells 6/12 QQLT ES progressor for 120 dolars and gives modified BIOS for any LGA1151 motherboard. I kinda wonder if my Gigabyte z170 hd3p's VRMs can handle an overclocked 6/12 progressor or is it worth doing the modification. Can you cover those CPUs in a video, it would be interesting to compare them with their desktop counterparts.

I have a spare Z170 mobo laying around. If I buy a Coffee Lake CPU, I might try it on that before modding my main Z270 board.

I'm in the same scenario. Did you ever try the mod, and which 8th or 9th gen cpu did you use?

This is an old video but I have a question regarding this on ASUS boards. The Asus Tuf Z270 Mark 1 in particular. Do you risk losing serial #/ MAC address/ UUID when using the bios flashback?

Thanks for all effort. I have a question for you because you seems like expert on this. I have Asus ROG G20CI (Ready PC) and its have 8th gen microcode inside. But it support only 7th gen. I want to upgrade i7 7700 to i7 8700. Do i need to isolate or connect pins? And i need to add 8th gen microcode again?

Hey great video, thx for your work.. May you please tell me to do minimal? I only want to exchange the essential codes to make z170 support my i3 - 8100..So I don't want IGPU, can i pick these things off? easily... Lastly, the physical modification you shorted with a copper yellow wire, does this have to be done and can I do it on all Z170 boards?
