TAKING KZbinS ADVICE, THIS IS A RE-RUN AND RETITLE OF THE ORIGINAL SERIES THAT WAS FILMED OVER THE INITIAL COVID YEAR.
A gardeners world; Nursery, gardens, propagation, plants galore and all the growing tips that go with them. A unique weekly documentary series filmed throughout 2020. A must for gardeners worldwide.
Informative, irreverent, funny and totally without comparison. After a lifetime in horticulture, Malcolm Hockham and his young team answer The Royal Horticultural Societies 2019 article that the industry is in crisis. Not here it isn't!.....Malcolms final full year on the nursery shows you why.
Last week of February...the wettest on record for us, along with gales, hail, and snow...add in a touch of coronavirus and we'd have good reason to be miserable....however, we're not. Keep your chins up everyone...spring is around the corner! Best wishes from us all at Eggleston Hall Gardens and the Plantsmans Corner channel.

Thank you Anthony. High praise indeed....It is always humbling and amazing that people think that. While we don’t pretend to have the production budget and whizz bangs of the BBC....or the equipment, we do try to keep it real and honest, not that Monty Don doesn’t. We’re just a bit earthier and simpler. Very best wishes....Malcolm

Thank you Griselda....I hope all is well with you. Thomas and I both expected them to get shorter and shorter, especially in the late winter. We actually have no idea what’s going to be in them till the moment we press record, nothing is planned....just stuff we do. I’m actually really enjoying editing them because it gives the youngsters a voice and I find it really rewarding they are confident enough to show what they have learned. Very best wishes....Malcolm

The weather has certainly been challenging. The thing about Clara is, there is nothing fake or contrived, she genuinely sees the best in everything. I’ve watched her grow up since in a pushchair, and to someone as world weary as I can be on occasions, she is like a breath of spring. Thank you for taking the time and your comment. Thanks Niall. It’s genuinely appreciated. It is only by keeping or increasing viewers, and getting encouragement that we know we are doing something people enjoy, and we can get across the simplicity of plants and their culture....Horticulture (gardening) has been made far too complicated in recent decades....there are no dark arts, growing is simply guiding plants to do what is natural to them. Very best wishes....Malcolm

We will keep doing them while I’m convinced the interest is there and they don’t become mundane....what we do will change from being a bit ‘samey’ each week....like with all things in the garden the changing is seasonal, weather related, and gradual.....best wishes..Malcolm

I love the way that you keep this real. It's great that you give percentages of how many plants grow on after being propagated. If every plant that every punter bought, grew and flourished, then there wouldn't be a horticultural industry for ornamental plants. Thank you as well for the tips about splitting primula, I've had 22 plants out of 3 pots I bought last month :-)

We have to be realistic Patrick, and honest. We are here next week and I feel the viewers of this channel would let me know if we went all “telly like”....we’re not here to emulate gardening programmes, just record the stuff we do and see and how we interact as people. There are no scripts, the “kids” are encouraged to pick up the camera and record whatever they like...I just fill it out myself with a few meanderings. It’s nice to know how people/viewers feel, we can’t change how we do this project, or become more professional filming wise, but I do hope we can interact with some of our viewers.....we will keep going while the folk watching these films keeps going up....and I feel the positive comments outweigh the negative. Thank you for taking the time yourself. Very best wishes....Malcolm

The weather has been so crappy this year but you have all worked miracles getting the nursery looking good. As the year unfolds we will be able to see all the hard work you have put in over the winter. Nice to see what all the staff are doing and Clara has such a naughty sense of humour. Malcolm, I cannot hardly wait for the next video each week! So glad you have decided to share the trials and successes with us again! I have a small retail/propagating nursery in Central Illinois, USA and learn so much from you!! It is really difficult when I see a new plant and then find that it isn't available here in the States!! What growing zone is the nursery there? I have tried searching for your location and zone but cannot make heads or tails of it online. We are a Zone 5b : -15 to -10 (F) but many times we go lower.

Wonderful video as always, don 't mind the length. Had questions about lavender. I suck at it. I know I overwater. How often do they need watering? Also... any other tips? Have been starting them from seed for ten years now to save money and have only had some luck with one plant. I am pathetic.
@plantsmanscorner128
@plantsmanscorner128 4 жыл бұрын
Why do you suck lavender? I once had a very dear friend bring in some lavender biscuits she made....I really did try to find something nice to say about them, but they were f***ing horrible, I think my face related that to her...I tried dunking them in my coffee but they made that stink as well......The smell just reminds me of toilet cleaner, and my grandmother, who put the stuff in everyone’s underwear drawer. I’ve no idea why. Anyway...if they are in the ground they shouldn’t need watering, keeping them on the really dry side concentrates the oils and the plant likes it...clear out the bottom of the bush at the end of both summer and winter...get rid of any dusty or fusty old leaves and other stuff gathered in there. Some people trim them over after flowering, I tend to do mine around March and trim back lightly, not into old wood as they don’t break easily, if at all, from old wood.....I only do it in spring because if there’s any damaged or broken stems there is more to replace them with than if I’d done it before winter....it’s personal choice. In pots I would use alpine soil and feed with a slow release fertiliser in spring...that would ease any overwatering problems. Thank you for taking time to comment, and best wishes.....Malcolm

Ok sorry but had a 2nd question, Why do you only put the time released fertilizer in one side of pot? Doesn't the plant tend to grow more roots on that side or does it not make a difference. Thank you for your time!

Do you place standard mouse traps inside the box with bait?
@plantsmanscorner128
@plantsmanscorner128 4 жыл бұрын
Yes Ryan, we put two traps in each bait box. I refuse to use poison so it’s the only way I can do it. The boxes are to protect birds and the hole six]Zoe is important not to be too large. The bait we use are bits of dolly mixtures, jelly babies, or wine gums.....any trap works, but I’ve avoided showing the setting or killing out of not wanting to offend people’s sensibilities.....but I’m still in two minds wether this provides a true reflection of running a nursery.....I really should include it at some point....I prefer little black plastic traps with a small round section to press bait into....I need to show you really.......best wishes....Malcolm
