About 2 months ago, I couldn't sleep, so I decided at 5AM to go for a run and see how far I could go. I managed 3km having never run before and I was also a 20 a day smoker. Since then I've given up and now I can run about 10km before I get tired. It's not about speed, it's about enjoyment. I've never timed myself, I just enjoy it. You didn't see Forest Gump with a stopwatch did you...He ran because he enjoyed it, and when he got tired, he went home. So should everyone. It's the best way to run I think. The sun at your back and the open road. Good luck everyone :)

That day, for no particular reason, I decided to go for a little run. So I ran to the end of the road. And when I got there, I thought maybe I'd run to the end of town. And when I got there, I thought maybe I'd just run across Greenbow County. And I figured, since I run this far, maybe I'd just run across the great state of Alabama. And that's what I did. I ran clear across Alabama. For no particular reason I just kept on going. I ran clear to the ocean. And when I got there, I figured, since I'd gone this far, I might as well turn around, just keep on going. When I got to another ocean, I figured, since I'd gone this far, I might as well just turn back, keep right on going.

Hi Corey Helsingus, I can completely understand your concern for correct form to get over your injury. Chi Running helped me get over shin splints and I've grown to REALLY enjoy jogging b/c of the book. Keep in mind that the video talks about not "leaning from your hip,,,be vertical from hips up." Chi Running encourages leaning at the ankle (remember the ankle loosening exercise where you push lean forward--from ankle--and push against door/wall to propel yourself back).

Running faster is basically striding as far as you can, as fast as you can, while keeping the balance. Leaning forward only helps in the acceleration. If you've reached your top speed, leaning forward will be either a stress in your back or causes you to lose balance and fall because your legs can't keep up.

1. Toes means balls of your feet in running. So yes and yes. 2. Tension requires exertion of muscles. Relax what isn't necessary. 3. Not BS, slimmer profile reduces drag, more arm movement raises output. 4. Running races requires leaning slightly forward in posture, so your foot will land underneath. 5. Not a bad idea.

@RayBingrunshard11 жыл бұрын
I used to shod run and heel strike just like everyone else. I've been running minimalist to barefoot for over a year now. It is the best way to run. I saw a comment referring that this is good for jogging not sprinting. Well once you get this technique down, then you can gradually speed up and it becomes almost like a sprint: makes it easier to sprint. You strike the ground softer and your hamstrings act like spring boards shooting you forward. I run 10 miles at a time under an hour frequently.

leaning should be a DO not a don't. lean forward from the ankles and not the waist but you are leaning forward slightly. if you are vertical as the video suggest you will not land as softly and you will not have a natural forward momentum making you have to expend much more energy to move forward. the lean allows you to glide ahead in an effortless manor while keeping a nice easy pace. his other points are good but leaning forward from the ankles is a MUST do.

yes you should have a cadence of at least 180 steps per minute. It's fine to have a long stride behind you. your foot should be starting to come back to you when it hits the ground[kinda like the counting horse] and thus providing forward movement the whole duration it is in contact with the ground.

He is saying that we as a society are not accustomed to running regularly, he switched his words. We ARE designed for it, but we may not be reasy for it overnight, it takes some preparation before diving in headfirst. (Or feet first.)
@TheJamesTheatreTvOfficial12 жыл бұрын
It is believed that we evolved into the australopithecus in order to run long distances for the sole purpose of scavenging for food; by that theory we were actually built specifically for running longer distances. We aren't a very fast animal (for speed, 2 limbs is entirely obsolete to 4, excluding size differences), so we can't be built for speed. And EVERYTHING is wrong with over striding. I don't mean to offend you but I'm very experienced in this topic. I hope this clears things up :) ~James

He isn't saying that your body isn't /evolved/ to run this way, it's that most people run without getting the knowledge about their body to run correctly. It's about the form and how you make your body glide with ease, instead of 'thumping' and doing all of those things he made a point not to do. If you had listened a bit closer to what he was saying, he was making sure you don't injure yourself by running sloppy and eventually injuring yourself.
@is3ven11 жыл бұрын
@Mihai B I don't think he mean't body wasn't designed to run, he meant running from beginners with no experience to running several km. he emphasized easing into it to avoid injury etc.

If you listen carefully he actually says not to lean forward from the 'hips' which is exactly in keeping with Chi running, ie; you should lean forward from the ankles with a straight body and not bend at the hips. Hope that helps :)

If it's really bad, I would recommend going to the doctor and get a note for an excuse not to work out. For me, I ran 5 miles today. I can sure as hell tell you that I was cramping really bad and my chest was hurting. It was very painful. But I didn't stop at all. You want to succeed in staying in shape, or becoming an successful, IGNORE the pain. You'll get use to it.

Swimming is the best exercise! I would love to swim everyday but my pool is just too far away from my house, so i decided to jogging instead.

I live in the most humid part of Texas, and it kills to run. I either walk or swim.

I swam competively as a kid, and YT is making an effort to get me back into the pool/finally make me fullfill my triathlon pledge... I hate chlorine, no, it's not a trigger, but I'd guess as close as it gets, I just despise it. It's as they say, nothing beats running on terms of simplicity, get up, pee, brush your teeth, drink a glass of water, dress the little you need (yep, it WILL get warm), tie your shoes, close the door behind you, run, repeat.

This is so so helpful and interesting!!! Thank you so much!! I realize I'm a heavy foot faller and that I tend to over stride becaus eI thought it's good pushing myself /: But hey, I did almost get 16 minutes for 2 miles!((:

But alot of runners I hear - keep saying you shouldn't be vertical - like you advize, and that you should lean forward to help stop overstride and landing on your heel? Maybe I'll try both when i go running tomorrow.

I'm a heel striker, and i can run a sub 5 minute mile, in track and cross country. Just run they way you want to run don't let people tell you how to do it, if it feels good to run the way you do then keep running that way
