Long runs are good for developing your aerobic system to help you sustain extended work and manage weight, and at least for me help with getting used to pushing and being uncomfortable. But you are absolutely right you need to do short hard bursts with short rests to simulate a round if you want to improve.

You’re right, shorts runs are better to get use to a fight tempo but i would still incorporate the 10k runs (like once or twice a week). I think long runs give you the fitness and endurance in the first place then you get your body to adapt to the frequency of fighting through sprints etc..

If you run long distances you build a good base so you can run faster paces and recover faster from sprints. So diversifying your runs should include long runs as well as intervals, fartleks, shorter tempo runs, 3-5ks… plus, you will have the mental health benefit of learning to hold back and conserve energy. I do high intensity sports professionally for 20 years and only 2 years ago I started feeling the difference by adding aerobic base training ✌🏾 trust me, it helps.

This is a great video, very true indeed. I also used to make the mistake to only running 5Ks (bcs I found them more chill), and that made me lose muscle because it’s long distance and so your body believes that you don’t need it (hence y long distance runners are all skinny). My coach told me I need to go back to doing sprints immediately and they REALLY help with cardio when your sparring especially. So yeah, more sprints than 5Ks guys 💪. Lamppost to lamppost is a great strategy by the way. Sprint with all you’ve got from one lamppost to another then jog/walk/slow down to the next lamppost, then sprint again! Do 3 sprints in total, then walk all the way back to where you started. And do it again. I normally do 3-5 sets of these.

I just run for a about 3k with but during that run I find a points in front of me where I sprint for a max speed (for example a lattern or a tree in a few meters away). After that, back to the normal pace for a few seconds and sprint for another point again. It is great for a boxing and making a running a little bit less boring.

As a successful amateur boxer i ran 4-6 miles per day 5 days per week. The 6 miles sometimes spread over 2 sessions, frequenty not though. I think a 10k is fine but no more than once weekly and the majority at 4 miles. Also aim for a good pace at least 6.20 mile pace, anything less is just jogging and you need more than that to raise your heart rate sufficiently for extended periods and to get you breathing hard for extended periods.

Good Question! You want to make the sprints as dynamic as possible. Short answer is, I wouldn't go by the distance covered in my sprints as a collective but the individual sprints since I'll train my body to its fullest extent every sprint. When I went to the home of GB boxing. I was given a 5 week running programme. THIS IS ON THE CHESSBOXING101 COURSE! it's the best guide on how to structure your sprints to get the most out of the workout.
