Kitchen nightmares and disasters can occur any time if you are not careful. In one video, a man was trying to make apples flambe for his wife and poured hot brandy in a hot pan, which set his stove ablaze. Nutley, New Jersey Fire Captain David Hamilton says you should never transfer flaming alcohol from one pan to another. “When you go to pour that, the flame is still gonna want to come up,” he told Inside Edition. KZbin is loaded with frightening videos of cooking catastrophes. #InsideEdition

Today this saved my department of probably being consumed by flames My sister was cooking while I was studying and she got distracted on her phone and a grease fire started, she screamed and on the panic she was about to throw water at it, I immediately yelled her to stop and ran to it. Now, this is South America, having a fire extinguisher it's extremely rare in houses, so the first thing thing I did was to put a lid over it and wait until it was done, I knew the fire went out almost immediately, but I still waited a few extra seconds to make sure

For all the people wondering why water is causing this extreme fire reaction: First: Oil (nonpolar) and water (polar) don't mix. Second: the density of water > oil. This means if water is added to oil, it will sink downwards. Third: fire can expand due to an increase in temperature, increase of fuel, and/or increase of oxygen. Now if water is added to an oil fire it will first try to sink towards the bottom of the pan. But due to the extremely high heat of the oil, all water molecules will be vapourised instantly (steam) when trying to travel through the oil. When steam is generated it will increase the temperature of the oil even further which leads to an even intenser fire than before. Steam does not only increase the temperature, it also blasts all the oil away from the pan. Why? Because as I mentioned, water was first traveling down through the oil before it vaporized. When steam was "finally" generated, it lifted a number of the oil molecule out of the pan. That is why it so dangerous to add water to oil when it's on fire. I hope this helps. If I made a mistake somewhere. Don't hesitate to educate me further. Have a nice day.

The steam DOES NOT increase the temperature of the oil. That is thermodynamically impossible. Energy is absorbed in the phase change from liquid to vapor. the violent conversion from liquid to steam further atomizes the grease increasing the surface area and spreads the fire. Science. Get some.

A comment on the baking soda: DO NOT use flour. Flour is extremely flammable and combustable, it may look similar, but you'd be making things a whole lot worse.
@hagamapama
@hagamapama 6 ай бұрын
The reason baking soda works is that as it gets hot it releases CO2. The same stuff they use in many fire extinguuishers. It works really well in a pan because CO2 is heavier than air and drives away all the oxygen.

I studied culinary arts at tertiary level and during a pasta making contest I deliberately set on fire the alcohol vapors of the wine I was adding for some showmanship, and let it burn out instead of putting a lid on it (the alcohol burns off very quickly anyway). The judges weren't impressed and it knocked my gold medal down to silver for "uncontrolled pan fire". 😥 My fettuccine was pretty good - I laced it with prosciutto and cracked pepper though did a fairly basic white wine sauce. Enough to get a gold but not enough to take first place. The actual winner was my friend - a really nice middle aged Korean woman: I could imagine her doing one of those humble Asian cooking channels on KZbin... She gives that vibe. Anyway her pasta was impeccable... I actually can't remember the flavours but I remember she used squid ink in half the pasta and it looked absolutely beautiful and had a really rich creamy taste. Definitely deserved the win.

Btw, a large piece of cloth or a blanket can work too. But has to cover it all at once and quick, or else it can potentially catch fire too. As long as it cuts all the oxygen to the fire, it will work. The larger the better. My dad used a blanket to put out a TV that caught fire when I was a kid.

@@GOATLENCE No idea. I was watching tv and suddenly saw a small flame coming out the top and called my dad. It was one of those '70s or '80s tvs that still had buttons for channels on it.

I can never remember how to deal with grease fires. You're either supposed to make yourself look bigger and yell loudly to scare it away OR you're supposed to lay down and play dead so it loses interest. One or the other.

Try to have more than one extinguisher. I bought one for the kitchen and one for my bedroom. I got that tip from a friend who kept one close to her bed and was able to put out an electrical fire before it got out of hand.

The store. You can get them at Lowe's or Home Depot or sears. I would not get them at Walmart because they could be defective. You need to get a good quality one not one that is made in China

When I was little, a toaster oven caught on fire in the kitchen. My mother is panicking. I bolt into the pantry and grab a box of baking soda. Being observant, I saw that on the side of the box it showed that it could be used to put out fires. It worked.

Just had to use a fire extinguisher today for this exact reason. I would try the lid first though if you can (no idea this was an option). The fire extingusher makes a huge mess. Took us about 1.5 hours to clean all our nearby appliances.
