I was a chef for 21 years. What Ramsay did was EXACTLY what one is supposed to do. It doesn't matter if the cloth is wet or dry. Notice how he gently lowered the cloth and apron over the flames, so avoiding fanning them. The flames are immediately starved of oxygen and thus die away.

Salt is actually a really good fire extinguisher. The salt melts and then builds a crust which suffocates everything underneath.

I don't get it. Why salt? Baking soda, sodium bicarbonate, is used to put out fires. The last thing I would do is put a dry cloth apron on it. Wet maybe, but not a dry apron. That cuts the heat.
