We had a customer bring one in because he tried the rope thing. He got the rope caught so bad in the ports we could not get the cylinder off. We had to damage the piston to get the cylinder off. Expensive lesson for him

I'm confused...aren't there notches to fit a wrench on the puller to hold it while threading in the 'bolt'..sorry if I'm missing something..

Good trick, I use a ball bearing instead of a washer on the end of the crank, less surface area = less friction with some grease, the cranks shd be hardened, never heard of them flaring out before,,,, however you see way more engines than I do. Cheers, Doug

I gave you a like because most of what you say about flywheel removal is legit. But I worked as a professional MC mechanic for 25 years and would have never removed a flywheel without the cylinder in place. For the same reason, countershaft sprockets should be removed while the engine is still in the bike with the chain over-tightened and brake applied. The old rope trick was good in its day when it was uncommon for home gamers to have impact drivers. Nothing to do with you, but T-handle design in a world where impact drivers exist is ridiculous. Most crankshaft nuts will come loose with an impact driver (assuming your flywheel puller has a hex head instead of a T-handle) and holding the flywheel with nothing but your fingers. Right now I'm working on a 1950 Whizzer motor. The designers of that motor had no idea that anyone would ever want to remove the flywheel, so their only advice is to get behind the cast flywheel with a screwdriver while beating on the left-hand threaded bolt. With that method, you wreck the bolt and the crankshaft at the same time.

Thanks Bill...time and a place for different techniques right? This a a pretty old video and yes impacts have come a long way in price and easy availability. good thinking about the rope deal. it cushions , but it also holds . would have used a cheeta pipe to help twist. but, also the motor should have been bolted down for such rotating pressure. but i can see why you used a dead blow hammer, you were trying to demonstrate on '' how to '' . excellent video !! 1000 thumbs up !!

I always tighten the puller then rap the end of the puller to jar the flywheel loose rather then use excessive force on the puller handles. A sharp tap and the flywheel pops off, no damage.

I approve of putting the piston back in the cylinder where it is safe.. but then you go on... *instead of transferring the force through the puller to a wrench on the puller, you would rather transfer hammering through the crankshaft, connecting rod, piston, head, bearings etc.* Does it work? Yes. It is better? No. Just grab a longer wrench or set the wrench in a position where it runs into the table or floor before you are in a position you don't like. But *if it's safely in the cylinder, then why does it matter what rotation the crank it at??* let the thing spin as it wants and put all the force through the puller and not the rest of your engine. If it's really stubborn, heat the flywheel to cause it to expand and pull off easier (much better than risking mushrooming the end of the crank).

Hey there Andrew. We welcome input and FYI...Shane responds to channel members himself daily but we wanted to respond on a couple of points from what we know. As with any process, the chosen technique will vary on needs, outcomes and is often situational. Maybe you didn't see or hear the entire video from the comment you left as we think its was covered as to why this was chosen and as you see in the video this tool would not allow the use of a wrench as you suggest due to the threads would be damaged. There are other pullers available that could be used as you suggest. Also, we know from past videos of Shane's, you NEVER heat a rotor. If you'd like to know why your have to ask him, I tried to do a quick search for the video where he covered this and couldn't find it. (hard to do with 700 on here 🤣) That would be a great question for him. He does get back on non-member comments once in awhile but his inbox is pretty full serving his customers in the shop and members. We will share some links to connect with him directly if you wish.
