Hi... I'm reading John Wray's "South Sea Vagabonds", first published in 1939 and how he built his first sailboat himself in the early 1930s (he was only 21 at the time). Anyway, I'm 73 and am enjoyong his book, though I'm always looking up words as I know nothing of sailing. Wray mentioned coming out of his first storm and he and his crew being careful not to let their boat gybe, and so I had to look it up here in KZbin. Your video was the first to come up. Great explanation. If only I was young again. Thanks!

Cool info, we'll have to check out that book. Never too old. We had an 80 year old student last week, he was sharp as a tack! There is a saying among sailors, "Go cruising for 5 years, come home 10 years younger."

Couldn’t agree with Alex’s comment more! As a new student of sailing I have been voraciously consuming online info and let me tell you, there’s a lot of trash out there. I’m pretty discerning when it comes to subscribing to KZbin channels but it only took me 4 minutes to know this one is a keeper. Thanks for the great instruction!!

Great demonstration captain! When I have very strong winds I rather do a Tack instead of Jibe. Much safer and also much faster for the inexperienced crew
@NautilusSailing2 жыл бұрын
Yes, great point! There are definitely times when going all the way around and through a tack instead of doing a gybe, especially in stronger winds, stormier conditions and with inexperienced crew, makes a lot of sense...
@michajabonski8152 Жыл бұрын
Well I think, with strong wind and a small boat, going all the way around can result in your boat heeling or even capsizing, no?
@epicnavigator Жыл бұрын
@@michajabonski8152 If it's done correctly is way more safe. In any case we do not do things that we are not trained and practice to do and I recommend you to join a local sailing club with a coach and ask him to explain you everything 😎

When tacking, you tighten the main sheet. When do you loosen the main sheet? Is that what you meant by trimming the sail or were you referring to the jib?

Sorry for my English, but when I tack I let the boat fall from wind a little to gain speed, and then steer the boat through the wind smouthly. You loose the most speed by steering through the wind to abtruptly, with the risk of stalling, and eventually even jibing....

So Tacking is all about the Genoa sail, and Gybing is all about the Main sail??? Correct???
@NautilusSailing2 жыл бұрын
Mostly true! On a tack the mainsail is centered, so you only deal with the jib and move it from one side to the other. On a gybe, the sail we worry about is the mainsail (we want to avoid an accidental gybe!) so we deal with moving that from one side to other first, and once that is safely across, then we move the jib/genoa.

You’re backing your jib as you tack you will maintain your speed better if you get your jib on the other side before it fills
@NautilusSailing Жыл бұрын
It's all a balancing act! You definitely don't want to release your jib before you are through the wind or you loose momentum and your jib flaps like crazy. However, once the jib is through the wind get it on the new side and trimmed as quickly as possible to maintain speed.
@AimingWanderously4 күн бұрын
Total newbie here, but a couple questions if anyone still monitors these comments: 1) why the different spelling with gybe and jibe?, and 2) Why can't you just sail straight with the wind, if it happens to be the precise direction you need to go, or can you, and jibing is only if you need to go off angle from the wind??
@NautilusSailing3 күн бұрын
1) Good questions, the different spellings are part of the culture of sailing. It's evolved from different parts of the world, UK, France, US, AU all have slightly different words for the same things on boats. Gybing is to differentiate from the Jib. 2) Also a common question, going straight downwind, wing-on-wing is a bit of a tight-rope walk, +/- 5 degrees and you could accidentally gybe, is one reason, the other is performance. Believe it or not, sailing the angles and gybing downwind, on a broad reach, is faster than going straight because when you sail at an angle, you make wind from your boat speed. Like riding your bike on a calm day, everywhere you ride is a headwind. Hope that helps
