Yes 1 year later! I was searching for an easy way to sandwich a quilt. Yours popped up. It was awesome! I had to giggle when you spilled your clips! 😅. Then your finger gets stuck to the can!!! 😄😁😆😁. Same here. My finger got stuck to my very expensive 505 spray, then I spilled my basting pins!!! Thank you for a great video!

Thank you for sharing your method of sandwich-ing your quilt. You are brave to show this using a regular size quilt.

I sandwich mine like you on my cutting table I have used 3 pool noodles before but found it better to do like this for some reason. This is the only part of quilting I don’t like either! So now I feel better watching you!

😂 no, nothing bad edited out...I like to keep it real though. So many that I watch, I can tell they’ve edited out their mistakes. I guess that’s fine for a proper tutorial, but I like to show what REALLY happens. That way, nobody has to feel like their work has to be perfect every single time...cuz that’s just not real 🤷🏼‍♀️

I ironed the bottom layer with a towel underneath, then added the natting, placed topper on, then ironed again to make as flat as possible before I sprayed. I lightly ironed after bssting spray to enhance the adhesion. Used medium, non steam iron. Worked well.

I drop my pins on a daily basis- I got a magnetic wand in one of my sew sample boxes from Fat Quarter Shop and it is great for getting my pins up off of the floor!!!

I cannot begin to tell you how much watching you do this helped me. I had the general idea like what you are doing, but since this is my first, I am so glad you shared this for me to see. I actually pinned the top to the batting, but when I was ready to add the backing, I just didn't want to remove and repin (300+) all those pins. Something inside me said there must be a better way. I went and got some spray but wasn't sure where to start.

Your video is great, going to give your method a try. To save time centering the quilt, I tape a coin to the center of my table, then fold the backing into quarters and place the middle of the fold on the coin, follow the same way with the batting and top. Saves a lot of time.

I'm finally able to finish watching the rest of your video. That is a beautiful quilt. ❤️ Your cutting board is huge. The baby quilt I made, I sandwiched on the floor. Never again, it was hard getting back up. I had sore muscles I hadn't used in a long time. 😂

When I made the baby quilt, I ended up not having enough backing material to have a 2-3 inch edging, it was right up to the edge. So I sewed a basting stitch around the edge before quilting. It worked but I was stressing. Lessons learnt! Thank you for your videos.

Do you press your sandwich to heat set the glue now? I have wondered if that is a part the process for any brand of spray glue. Thanks for showing the whole process including the real life stuff...pins dropping, spray can sticking etc.

I have really enjoyed watching your process for basting your quilt sandwich on Save the Bees. Do you mind if I ask what you set your tension and stitch length (and any other adjustments you have found need to be made) for free-motion quilting on your Baby Lock Jazz II machine? I have been having the time getting mine set correctly. Thank you so much.
@lessonslearnt5966
@lessonslearnt5966 2 жыл бұрын
For straight line, I set the tension at 5 and the stitch length at 4. For FMQ 8.5 stitch length 0. Stitch length for FMQ doesn’t really matter since you are the one controlling it with foot pedal speed and speed of your hands. I’ve learned that slower is better for straight line or it will skip stitches. Faster is better for FMQ, but not super fast or you’ll still get skipped stitches. I’m not very good at FMQ on this machine yet.

Also, have you tried the powder that you sprinkle on and then press with iron? It takes longer than the spray but no nasty fumes. I like it for smaller lap quilts etc.

I actually quilt my sandwich on my queen sized bed. I saw it sponsored by QT Fabrics. I think it's the quilting traveller or something close. This the least favorite thing in quilting. I have 5 quilts that need sandwich and the whole thing. Lol

When I spray baste, I have an old bed sheet that I put on the surface of the table. When I spray baste, I tend to skip stitches when quilting, so for smaller projects I don't baste at all. I'm not sure what I'll do with a larger project because I really don't want to pin or stitch baste. Maybe I'll try your basting spray and see how that works.

Is that a single cutting mat you have on that table? My table isn't really big enough to do this and I don't like the spray so I have a concocted cardboard layout that fits over my queen bed and I do it all on my bed. I use large clips though to hold everything taught from layer to layer, I've never it done it by smoothing it out. I'd be too afraid it might shift while quilting it. I'll look forward to how you do the quilting.

It’s a set of 3 Olfa mats designed to fit together with clamps. 35x72. I misspoke on the size of the table. I was thinking 4x8 but I forgot we cut the plywood down to fit my mats.

Don’t you leave more excess batting around the four sides of your backing for the quilting process? Quilting takes up fabric and batting, I have run short of backing and batting when quilting.
