This process of connecting capacitor (formerly called condenser) in parallel across the load is called Power factor correction. This is done to correct the power factor of your inductive load towards unity (ie 1 {one} ). It is an attempt to remove the reactive part of your load current and leaving only that active current. By doing so in Electrical Engineering cct theory, we say the load is 'purely resistive' at unity power factor. The value of the capacitor to be use to correct the power factor towards unity (1) depends in how inductive the load is. It's is an attempt to cancel out the inductive current which is in effect will be lagging the voltage (or trailing behind) when the current-voltage graph against time is plotted in a graph. Note that when the two vector quantities (with magnitude and direction) are in phase or are neither leading nor lagging each others, tbe load is said to be purely resistive and wasted energy in form of reactive power is done away with. Hence the power is rated in Watts and otherwise, it will be rated in VA which is a product (multiplication) of both voltage and the used current that will be the real and the wasted in the later case. Thank Electrical circuit theory that taught us this relatively very, very simple theory amid other extremely complex theories which we have learnt and teach to our students up to Phd level.

House bills are calculated in KWH not in KVAH so no saving effect of this on your bill.It might increase due to resistive load of capacitor.

@@nikamabhijeet KWH is kilowatt hour and KVAH is kilo volt ampere hour. For house bills kwh is considered and for industrial bills kvah is used. For KVAH calculations power factor is considered which can be 1 or less.Kwah can be equal or more than kwh.

@@nikamabhijeet kVAH. Is voltage * current* 1000* time in hour while kw is kvah*cos(phi) KVAH is apparent power while kw is actual power considering the phase lag Or lead. For resistance loads (phi) is zero and cos(phi) is one... Capacitor is used for correction of powerfactor to unity or nearby... In India current is measured in kw and not kva so adding a capacitor will only increase the current bill.

For power factor correction, you need to know whether your angle is leading or lagging. You cannot blind insert a capacitor and hope the God will save your energy bulls.

May use 2.2 mfd to 6 mfd to each inductive load, in parallel note if capacitor gets short circuit, fuses will be blown. I don't think it saves power

Technique might be helpful when you run Inductive Equipments like motors etc.. , adding capacitor makes the Voltage and Current graph 📈 similar to one another and prevent current from lagging of the voltage, hence it can save 1-4 units hardly.

@@mfaumesuya7980 not very easy. Inductive load usually are electric motor. And the phase error should be not more of 0.8 cosene. But, there is a but. The phase error is not stable, it depends also from the mechanic load of the motor. There is no way to calculate time by time the phase error. But, on big installations there is an electronic box that has inside of it a three phase detector. Is a cmos CD4046. this IC together with step-down transformers will detect current error phase in rispect to voltage and a microprocessor will add or subtract capacitor on to the line in binary logic. In this way error phase is correct immidiatly in respect to the load. Other ways today a switching mode power supply or PWM power unit are used but electric motors are totally different in rispect to traditional motor. They are a three phase step motor (that how they are called) nowadays air conditioner, fridge, washing machine etc. are using this type of technology and they are called energy save. If you want to save money on electrical bill just unplug TV, DVD, hi fi, and all electrical home use staff when you don't use them. Think that a TV in standby drows about 2 watt hour. In 24 hours are 48wh. Time that for each TV at home, time that for eac dvd reader, time that for each computer connected at home and at the end you time that fo 365 day in a year and you will See how many kwh you pay without using them. Yes, it's call power factor correction. But it will work only if you have many inductive loads in your home, mean such as motors, tube lights transformers etc. Not for heaters hotplates like resistive loads.

Theariotically it will not serve any purpose and help to reduce power consumption, for the following reasons. 1. The function of a capacitor is to charge it self full and store the current and to release the voltage in to the circuit if any downs are there in power supply, thereby maintaining the power supply steadily. How this will help reduction in power consumption? 2) One should understand that for any fluctuations in power supply, the power meters will not run speedily mad on its own. At the most the capacitor will help for the steady supply of power by charge and discharge. That's all.

Your understanding the usage of capacitor in DC circuit is absolute, but likewise capacitor it makes the current leading in an AC circuit. So while residential customers has almost and always has an inductive load like every appliance which has a coil that makes the current lagging from the induced voltage then you are paying the cost of the apparent power instead of just simply be the real power since we are in AC circuit. In an AC circuit we have a power triangle. Apparent power is a vectorial sum of the real power and the reactive power, hence you have inductive load and aiming to pay only real power which you are likewise only using you have to make the voltage and the current be in phase or in unity that is then the use capacitor.

@@GKVVx If the AC circuit given is inductive load as what we have stated above then you are correcting your power factor from lagging to unity by including capacitor in the circuit, that this would comes out that your apparent power be equal to the real power and or your outcome circuit would be purely resistive and the inductive reactive power would likewise eliminated then eventually you are only paying now the real power consumed in a particular time and you would be paying less, but need not to put capacitor in a purely resistive load and or else you would be paying more since you are from unity to capacitive load. To determine your present load you can use Flukes multi-meter this would register the power factor angle and eventually determined the current either be leading or lagging in a particular angle and that’s only then to clearly know the capacitance of capacitor to use to at least comes near to a unity if known that the current is lagging or the circuit is inductive.

If you want to waste money and time, go ahead. Use anywhere from 1uf to 50 uf but make sure it is rated at 250V AC and above. To protect yourself connect 1M ohm half watt resistor across the capacitor. You would learn a good lession after spending a couple of $.

In my state the electric supply company by name CESC (Calcutta Electric Supply Corporation) has initiated ample legal action against the consumers those who attempted to apply this trick and was caught by the Special Task Force team of West Bengal State Electric Board.

Try to find it and read it clearly, that will help you to update your knowledge about this thing and the legal punishment mentioned under this section if any consumer tampers or alter the reading of the meter placed by the supply company to record monthly consumption of the consumer for Billing.

@@JM-lg2go By this I'm sure that you are neither an electric engineer nor an elec.technician isn't it. This not tampering of meters by any means. This is technically called improvement of power factor in any equipment which includes coil windings such as motor, fan etc... This is applicable only to AC current not for DC current. In the winding there is a phenomenon called inductance, in which induced EMF (Electro Magnetic Force) produces reverse current which resists the incoming current this is called "LAGGING OF CURRENT WRT VOLTAGE" and reduces the efficiency of the equipments. This is measured in the scale of 0 ,0.1, 0.2..... upto 1. 0 means lowest performance 1 is max efficiency. When capacitor is connected parallel to the supply it maximize the current at incoming to overcome the resistance which is called " LEADING OF CURRENT WRT VOLTAGE". I think your are now convinced. If not, then you can check the other comments in this video or search for term "POWER FACTOR"

Basically this improves the power factor to max. Because of inductance current lags behind the voltage, so to counter the lagging, capacitor is added parallelly. But this doesn't work on heaters, geysers Or any other electronic equipment or heating coils.

A sure way to lower your electricity bill is to put a magnet next to your meter. Place a speaker magnet on top of you pannel above the meter and watch it slow down by half or more instantly. Don't tell them I told you.

Only poor power factor may increase. But bill of Rs 750 will not reduce to Rs 250. As there are some fixed charges.

Only problem is that your electricity bill will remain unchanged. That domestic Energy meter records True Power (kW) not Apparent Power (VA) so you are not being charged for power factor correction. So in theory it may work but it's totally useless to save on electricity bills.

Don't use any capacitor our house load is capacitive inductive and resistive that is balanced PF is nearly 1 capacitor is connected if there is only inductive load and PF gets less than 1 , simply connecting will increase electric bill

I have made it years before. But not applicable in home, residential field. Nothing will improved. Waste of money. Suit only if you have inductive load.

correct, useless for home, rather it is a fire hazard the capacitor becomes extremely hot after one hour and may explode

It will not work in reducing domestic Electricity bill. Because domestic Electricity bill calculated only KWH. No role of power factor and increasing power factor KW can not be controlled.

The capacity will influence ( compensate) only reactive energy of the loads. No influences on resistances of the loads ( active power). Conclusions: No economy on electric heating with resistances. Main domestic consumers.

It is only use to... improve power factor.By way of improving PF...by adding capacitance load may reduce consumption...very..very minimum only... We are using mostly inductive load only...by adding capacitance load can compensate lagging PF and reduce the current..that is ampere.

The company meter mesure the power, not the current only. Adding a capacitor may, eventually, increase the power factor ( cosine phy) but won't change the actual power. in AC system the power is I x U x cos y ... not just I x U..... FAKE! SCAM!
