One of the worse teachers in the public school system I went to were the tenured teachers. One of them was so bad, he didn't change any of his curriculum for 20 years and bragged how no kid in his class ever passed with more than a C. He was hated by the students and he wasn't exactly the faculty's favorite person either. My best history teacher didn't go to college to be a history teacher. He went to college as a nutrition specialist. Yet his class was amazing. He ran it like your ideal college classroom. We got a syllabus at the beginning of each class with exactly what was due and exactly what the requirements were. We took notes that were well organized. He allowed discussions on various topics of history. And he taught the truth!

One of the best history teachers I had was from DC, he grew up there and was alive during many important moments from recent history, he was able to tell us about how his Dad had taken him and his brother to see Martin Luther King Jr.'s I Have A Dream speech. He wasn't always a teacher, he had been a carpenter for nearly 20 years before he decided he wanted to be a teacher, it was a very fun class, my particular class had only 5 students in it due to scheduling conflicts with the advanced history class which was only taught during that period, everyone in the class got an A, even the kid who averaged a C- in every other class, and it wasn't because he was just an easy teacher it was because he would keep us engaged, we would often have classes where we wouldn't take notes or read from the books, we would just talk and he was such a great speaker and he balanced humor with it so well that when it came time for tests that I could remember a story he told about the subject and it would just click. Many times his class didn't feel like a class it felt like a favorite uncle telling you a story and it made you care about what he had to say.

A low performing teacher can get some other job that they are more suitable for and it is only a little painful for that person for a short time. On the contrast to that the huge number of students that can be affected for life by the one teacher should be taken into account. Teaching is what they are supposed to be doing! If you are not good at it then get out of the way and let someone else who is better do the job. To use a liberal term, firing bad teachers is "for the greater good". We need great teachers that can help propel their students to greatness!

in my country they found the situation to be bad, they made a surprise test for the teachers with what they were supposed to know, and they scored badly, I think the pass rate was at about 50% and this test had thing that basically every teacher os supposed to know, and everybody tought look, they gonna fire them all, it's gonna be a big purge and everything will be fixed, but they didn't fire a single one due to the unions, I think for the public it would've been better if the whole thing would have been covered up, they now administer the test on a regular basis and on a fixed date, and the test has been dumbed down a bit, so that they can show teachers are improving...

at least she cared enough to visit and see reality not like DeVos... Teacher's union should redefine their role in education I believe in quality teachers... but no matter how good you are, the number of students will definitely affects quality.... Quality was not created overnight... It takes time... Tenure is a big word for a debate. Tenure is job security. If a security guard or a factory worker have job security, why can't teachers.. Truthfully, teachers sometimes have the worst working conditions in all professions... Overworked, Underpaid, Over-harrassed by parents and students, Overstressed If someone disagrees, please be a teacher yourself #teachersarehumanstoo
@nexeye15 жыл бұрын
Funny how in this video the 'quality' teachers had the most students, and don't give me that tenure shit, tenure is much more than job security. If you're a security guard or a factory worker you still get fired if you do your job poorly. Unless of course you're in a union. And I love the whole underpaid stick. They work nine months out of the year, yet in those nine months, they make nearly as much as an engineer does in nine months. You want to talk about something difficult, get an engineering degree. And the whole overworked shit? Have you ever met a salaried professional? With the advent of cell phones they are never off the clock. They can be called to deal with an issue at work in the middle of the night. Disagree? Go try it yourself.

The somebody needing to fix this is You. Teachers' Unions, Police Unions, they all have to go to change these institutions. Education is going to change drastically over the next few years. More kids will be home schooled using the internet and occasional group meetings, leading to internships, apprenticeships, and higher education for more technical fields. Ivy league colleges will continue, but many of the mid and lower range colleges with lower financial resources will soon fail. No more tenure and teachers' pensions at 100% of salary that are ruining state budgets. A new day is dawning in many areas with improved communications.
