Special thanks to our awesome patrons and Jasmine who just joined the club :) Join our Patreon and get awesome benefits: www.patreon.com/amatterofilm So today we want to take the time to rant about Adobe Premiere. *Premiere Pro* has been my editing software since 2008. I’ve always had issues with it, but I was a student who used pirated software because of the lack of income. When I graduated I began paying CC2015 Subscription which as some of you may know, is not really accessible if you work as a freelancer. I continued to have a lot of issues. Crashing, and not responding, both on Mac and PC. Today I reached my rage limit, we have been finding solutions to weird sound issues, and visual glitches for over 24 hours, and we finally were able to export it properly after 8 2-hour render time exports. Our PC is a powerful computer which works perfectly outside of Premiere. As soon as we’re able to do so, we’ll replace editing setup to a Mac and Final Cut Pro 7, which to me is a very reliable software. Anyway, thanks for reading our first rant, if you’ll like, we could even make a video about it. Hope you enjoy this challenging, and time consuming video essay we prepared for you. Thanks for the support.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens teaser is one of the best in recent years imo

Inception’s trailer is probably the most memorable trailer I have ever watched. Mind Heist by Zack Hemsey is one greatest pieces written for that movie and wasn’t even used in the film just the trailer.

Although a great video I do disagree with a few of your points. You say being unoriginal is a bad thing, but trailers are meant to pull people into the cinema, and having "cliches" that immediately tell you what type of movie it is could be argued is a good thing. It makes the people interested in such movies pay attention and pulls them into the cinema. I do fully agree on showing to much, however length is variable depending on what is trying to be done. Some trailers need more time than others. cuts that aren't in the movie are great in my opinion. it lets you get surprised in the cinema while still getting the mood and excitement from the trailer.

The art of the trailer is a complicated business, there's a fine line between a tease and giving away too much. Some of the most memorable trailers for me are the ones that use music to reinforce the visuals and leave me wanting for more. Most effective in a recent memory are - A Single Man, Samsara, Blade Runner 2049 Announcement, Inception, The Dark Knight Rises, Macbeth, 300, Gravity, The Signal.

A Quiet Place's teaser trailer is the reason I watched the movie. It's so unique and gripping me to watch it. Infinity War's trailer also comes to mind. That loud Avengers theme at the end sells it.

I stopped watching trailers for movies a long time ago. They always give too much away. I just watch/read spoiler-free reviews to get a gist of what the movie is about and then decide if it's something I may enjoy.

You make some good points but ultimately I have to disagree about trailers being too long at 2 and a half minutes. Just because its common for several trailers of that length to give too much information doesn't mean that's a guarantee. For instance the trailers for Star Wars The Force Awakens, Inception, and The Dark Knight all showed plenty of footage but none of it ruined the movie for viewers (The Force Awakens even managed to not spoil anything beyond the first act).

There are a couple of recent trailers that were absolutely stunning, well-crafted, and captivating: - Assassin's Creed Cinematic Trailers -Moonlight Trailer (while it does reveal a lot of about the plot/protagonists, it does not reveal the true complexity of each character and moment, making their actual occurrences extremely impactful. It is so beautifully crafted that it influenced me to watch the film when it was release. It remains as one of my favorite films of all time -- and that is a list that I rarely update) - Star Wars Trailers (the final products themselves have been a bit underwhelming, but the marketing is phenomenal) - DC Extended Universe Trailers (DC's recent films have not been fantastic, but each trailer is so wonderfully crafted and edited that I can't help but feel pumped) - Logan Trailers - Mad Max Fury Road Trailers (The editing, score, and cinematography for the trailer and the film itself is outstanding.)

Kylo Ben here, I changed my name and picture. Wanted to say just in case you think I've stopped watching. Personally some of my favorite trailers are the Mad Max Fury Road teaser, Dark Knight Rises trailer, and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes teaser. Keep up the great work.

Most modern trailer tropes I do find annoying, but the two I CANNOT stand are the following: 1. The overly slow, dark and dramatic covers of well known pop songs. Always inferior versions that suck all the fun from their original counterparts and instantly take me out of any trailer when I recognize their first lyric. I audibly groan every single time. 2. The endless amount of independent awards showcasing and stupidly overwhelming positive review quotes found in the trailers for smaller, more highly regarded films. The quotes oversell too hard. Sometimes we are just shown the logos of independent festivals, cause I guess that's enough to trick people into thinking that the movie advertised is already of higher calibre.

I just walk into the theater about 20 minutes late to avoid that cringe-fest. Your #1 is the trope that annoys me the most right now, for sure.

I feel like video game trailers are almost always more memorable since they are often short self-contained stories that don't need the rest of the product to be understood. They give you some answers, even if it's not related with the actual plot, instead of being only questions as in movie trailers.

Oh, and the 5 second teaser slapped in front of the full trailer never made sense to me... I mean, I know that it's probably to combat the "skip" button that is on youtube ads that appears after 5 seconds. But... They use the same gimmick in cinemas for crying out loud! I'm there already, I will sit and watch it all the way through (only because in a cinema we cannot skip ads) , don't worry about it.
@jmalmsten6 жыл бұрын
One rule I wish more trailer folk would follow is "only use bits from the first third of the film" And I have no real complaints about using footage that isn't in the film so long as the footage in the trailer is in the spirit of that film. And that it isn't better than in the film.

Did any one else catch that shot from the movie FOXTROT? It's an Israeli film that I saw randomly at a film festival and loved it. It was so weird to see a shot from a random foreign film that happens to be one of just two films that I saw at this festival witch was in Zagreb of all places. Anyway it's this one 8:12

Great video! I am honestly surprised though, that you didn't mention the trailer for Prometheus. It is by far my favorite movie trailer of all time, and everyone I talked to has remembered that trailer regardless of seeing the movie or not. The best thing about it is that the movie was pretty dang bad. It just had this amazing trailer. Also, what is the name of the song at 4:02?

The problem is, marketing is reliant on social media clicks, watch time & views... so it's unlikely to change! Obviously the ideal would be to have them show less buttttttt no studio is ever likely to do it - even people like Christopher Nolan don't really have a say in that :/
