Here is a brief on the importance of population size when seed saving. As a general rule out-crossing species like brassicas, chards, corn, and carrots need larger population sizes to remain healthy and vigorous - over 100 plants contributing seed to the future. Selfers and intermediates need less - between 10-30 individuals. These include beans, peas, lettuce melons, cucumbers, watermelons, squash species, tomatoes, eggplants and peppers.
