Go n-éirí an bóthar leat
/Guh ny-ree on boh-har lyat/
May the road rise to meet you
Go raibh an ghaoth go brách ag do chúl
/Guh ruh on ghwee guh brawkh eeg duh khool/
May the wind be always at your back
Go lonraí an ghrian go te ar d’aghaidh
/Guh lun-ree on ghreen guh cheh air dye/
May the sun shine warm upon your face
Go dtite an bháisteach go mín ar do pháirceanna
/Guh ditch-a on wah-shtukh guh meen air duh fawr-ken-na/
May the rains fall softly upon your fields
Agus go mbuailimid le chéile arís,
/A-guss guh mool-ee-midg leh khay-la a-reesh/
And until we meet again
Go gcoinní Dia i mbos A láimhe thú.
/Guh gwin-ye Jee-a ih mus a law-iv-eh hoo/
May God hold you in the palm of His hand.

I can remember my grandmother had this blessing on her wall. As a young 8 year old it sounded so comforting and I thought "to have a friend to wish you a blessing like this would be a true friend indeed". Shame the world has changed.

Siobhan, My people are from Donegal and Cavan. Where are you from, yourself? . Your video is excellent! Even listening to you speak English brings me such joy. The fact that the language of our ancestors is still alive and well in Ireland is such a blessing. Slan gu foil. Sìne McKenna

This blessing was my first encounter with Irish culture. I still keep it somewhere inside a book, several years later. Thank you so much for this video!

I love you’re accent Siobhan 👍👍 I’m Scottish and can just about understand a few of the Irish words from my limited learner Scots Gaelic vocabulary, when they are written and spoken at the same time. All the best 🙂

I absolutely love how you say your name, a Shiobhán! I know a lot of people query about why you say your name in such a way. If they would study true Irish pronunciation, they would understand-the “bh” combination is broad and therefore should be pronounced a “w” sound. That is how I was taught as well. As I began exploring different dialects beyond my own, I discovered that this holds true except in names and place names where the “bh” combination is a “v” sound. I have only recently started learning about Canúint na Mumhan and how they treat “bh” and “mh” always has “v” sounds. I believe the dialect being taught on a broader scale to be that of Canúint na Mumhan with some influences of Canúint Chonnacht. I don’t really see much of my own being used. Now that I live in the states, I really miss hearing my “tribe” speak, but it’s nice to hear you and Dane at Learn Irish speak as well. Take care of yourselves, Bitesize! Slán go fóill, mo chairde!

Its so good to hear the old languages! I mean so much was lost along the ages. Seems like in Ireland the old language gets preserved! How old is old Irish probably more then 2000 years or so?!

Hello, I was wondering if you could help me out. I am about to propose to my girlfriend, but I wanted to have a shirt made for our 6 month baby that popped the question for me. I wanted it to say: Mommy, will you marry my daddy? or Mommy, will you marry daddy? I pieced the following together and not sure if it's correct or not: mamaí, an bpósfaidh tú daidí? If you could help me with the correct Gaelic translation and maybe how to pronounce it, your help would be greatly appreciated and help with a unique proposal - thanks in advance.

A Shiobhán a Chara. An é an rud céanna "Sábháil ó thinte Ifreann sinn", "Sábháil sinn ó thinte Ifreann", "Sábháil muid ó thinte Ifreann sinn" nó "Sábháil ó thinte Ifreann muid" le rá le do thoil?
