7:51 I once got a hand-made birthday card from a college friend, with "Yakida!" written on it. I wondered why my mate had sent me something in Japanese, before I realised - ages later - that this was how he thought "iechyd da" was spelt :)

Hello Jason. I've come to barter. I was wondering which patreon level might allow me to to occasionally query you for answers to grammatical questions? I am a Washington State Dysgwr Cymraeg, learning primarily through Duolingo - which, unfortunately, at present offers little in the way of grammar instruction for Welsh learners. I do have Christine Jones' book on Welsh grammar, but sometimes my question isn't covered. You are my favorite YT Welsh teacher, so I thought I'd take a stab at flattery and bribery so see if it would get me a little personal instruction. 😁 My burning question at the moment is, why, "Wnaethoch chi" instead of Gwnaethoch chi?" Is this a rare mutation that comes before instead of after the trigger? Is it an abbreviation?? Is either acceptable? (I've been marked wrong for the later, but Duolingo isn't flawless.) In any case, would joining your channel allow me to periodically get a bit of personal instruction? Which level would be most appropriate for this service? Thanks, Jason. I appreciate it. Emma

Hi Emma. Glad you’re enjoying learning Welsh and that I’m your favourite teacher 😉. So it’s ‘Wnaethoch chi?’, because you drop the G in the question form. A lot of people have told me about the lack of grammar in the new version of Duolingo. It’s a pity as a lot of people find it useful. In terms of joining Patreon, just join at a level that feels right for you. @@LearnWelshPodcast Thank you much Jason! And I will do. I now recall that a soft mutation applies to "short-form verbs in question form." However, I'm not really clear on what is meant by a "short-form verb," so I missed the application. As for Duolingo, I'm certain that bringing grammar on board is in the plan. We remote learners have to be patient and muddle through until then! Thanks again!
