I’m half Irish and a quarter Swedish & Norwegian. I’ve been trying to learn Svenska for 650 days on duolingo and this video is a lot more helpful. My 2nd grandfather and grandmother were both from Sweden. How do you say great great grandparents?
@Tethloach13 ай бұрын
I learned that mor is in 4 European languages and 2 Africa languages. The meaning of moor from Norwegian is translated perfectly. Mor in Nuer is a bit different. Mor = your mom in Nuer

I would really like if you could make a more detailed video on the topic. It'd be very handy.

Good to know! We were about to make it more detailed with the more complecated words... but it started looking like a 30 minute video 😅. But we can definelty do it in parts. The more like this commment gets, the sooner we will make it! 😁

I was born in Sweden but grew up bilingual in the Netherlands. My children and those of my sisters were happy to refer to our parents by the Swedish terms and their dutch grandparents by the dutch terms (only 1 kind (Oma/Opa)) However, when still young, they got confused when together at our parents, referring to them by different terms (Farfar/Morfar & Farmor/Mormor)🤯 Jag antar att kusiner i Sverige har samma problem när det är unga... För mig var det åtminstone så när jag var ung och på släktbesök i Sverige.

Please do another video on this topic! My parent in law both remarried so how would my children call their new partners in Swedish? And how would you call someone who is not really a grandparent but feels and has the same bond like one?
@FunSwedish3 жыл бұрын
You can put "Bonus" in fron of everything :) Bonuspappa is a dad that you get "as a bonus". Not your bloodline dad. Same goes for "bonusbarn" or bonus children. And you could even say "bonusfarfar" :D.

Me thinking that the great-grandchild is barnbarnbarn before you said it was barnbarns barn: 😬😐😶 Also, I giggled at "min faster". Probably because I imagined translating "Hej, faster" into "Hey, faster" which would then end up being "你好,快点" in Chinese (Hi, faster)😂 My mom and I had a good laugh at that one.
@FunSwedish3 жыл бұрын
Haha, you are very smart! You understood the Swedish logic barnbarnsbarn before I even said it 👏 Glad that you and your mom saw the video together and that it made you laugh 😍

I enjoy your videos, particularly when you talk about slang terms. Would only children refer to their father as 'pappsen' or can grown-ups do that too? Tack :)
@FunSwedish3 жыл бұрын
Glad you enjoy them! I think adults use it as well but more if they are joking "pappsen" otherwise they use more "pappa or farsan "

Hello Fun Swedish. I would be so grateful if you would answer a question for me. I am an American of Swedish decent. My last name is Bjustrom but I believe when my family arrived there was an "r" in it. Bjurstrom. I am told this translates "Beaver River" But have not been able to confirm it with an internet translator. Is That true? Thank you!
@FunSwedish3 жыл бұрын
Intersting! 🤔. Ström is a bit like river. More like current. So a fast flowing river. Bäver is the Swedish word for beaver 😁. But "bjur" could be an old word for that. I am not really sure

My Swedish niece (min brorsdotter) just had a baby (a girl)... so is she my brorsdotter dotter? Also, is there a term that non-binary people use for any of these? Is there a rise in those terms? I realized a couple years ago that uncle/aunt and niece/nephew in English are the only familial terms that didn't have a gender neutral grouping (like "children" or "siblings" could be a mix)... we have to say nieces and nephews. My good friend's sister's child is non-binary and my friend now calls them her "nibling." Like if my niece was, instead, non-binary, is there a term... maybe brorsbarn would suffice?
@petergustafsson16709 ай бұрын
A bit late, but: No, there are no universally accepted relationship terms that specifically refer to non-binary people.

How do I say “my mother’s house”? Min mammas hus eller mitt mammas hus? (I know it’s min but why if hus is an ett word?)
@FunSwedish2 ай бұрын
"Min mammas hus" would be the correct version (your mom is the main focus here, not the house) that is why you will have "min" since mamma is an en-ord (en mamma). If you want to learn more about min/mitt and practice Swedish grammar / vocabulary with us sign up to our Swedish courses.
