One is about making clients happy and another one is about job interview. I am enjoying learning them now. I don't have deal with clients but I find this course useful anyway. The American R is a nightmare for us Arabic speakers. Thx G 👍👑
@7MPhonemicEnglish2 жыл бұрын
American (r) is a vowel. You can sustain it until you run out of breath and it sounds the same from start to finish. It's the single monophthong vowel in the word 'drt'. Usually we use the combination of 'er' to represent the sound (ie 'better', 'gather') but that's only because we were brainwashed into believing that (r) is a consonant which led to the false notion that we needed to insert a vowel.
@Vagabondobiondo Жыл бұрын
You're totally right in practicality; that's exactly how I teach it to students. I think the speech science wonks have termed it a 'semi-consonantal vowel', though. Which means essentially what you said, but with some weird technicality which gives it a consonant flavor.
@7MPhonemicEnglish Жыл бұрын
@@Vagabondobiondo Yeah. It creates difficulty using vowels as if they are consonants. It's hard to figure out what we're doing with our mouth parts as well. I believe we do similar things with the word 'coordination' where a /w/ approximate may be used between the two /o/'s which gives the second /o/ a consonant flavor but we tend to recognize the /w/ as the consonant sound but we do the same thing with the 2nd /r/ in the word 'error' where we do a vowel /r/, consonant flavored /r/ and then another vowel /r/, an ill-begotten word for certain but we're stuck with it.

The most important thing is to NOT roll it (like Spanish). Spanish speakers will always say English speakers must roll the r, the opposite is also true, you must NOT in English. I think focussing on not rolling it is also important, specially for slavs and spanish speakers.
